Summer Wars / Dir. Mamoru Hosoda, 2009

Far from being a kiddy entertainment piece, “Summer Wars” is more like a proper great feature movie. Written and directed by M. Hosoda (also known for “The girl who leaped through time”), awesomeness was added to the whole by famous prolific artist Takashi Murakami. He designed parts of the movie as always with lush details and generous talent, going along the lines of his collaboration with Vuitton a while ago with those two brilliant anims “Superflat Monogram” (that Hosoda directed) and “Superflat first love” (hyperlinked, best quality available sorry). The plot of “Summer Wars” : a student tries to fix a problem he accidentally caused in OZ, a digital world, while pretending to be the fiancé of his friend in her grandmother’s 90th birthday. As we know the set or story don’t have the greater importance, it’s the people and their relationships. Here it’s refined, treats you like someone intelligent, it’s clever and really heart-warming.

What to say .. Nothing is happening in this music video. They (try and) stay still for 3.55 minutes : it’s therefore as interesting as skimming through the youtube timeline bar to get to the end of it : 3s of expectations and a disapointement.Oh but we get the “let’s be edgy, let’s do something new, shock people, be funny, artsy, let’s forget that it’s better to start with a cliché than coming back to one” ... but it’s not really doing it. Maybe with more honesty can we say : budget restrictions ? However if you like this genre, you can find the same nonsence with “Atoms for peace” by Default’s music video. There you have animated stamps forming a puzzle for 5.16 minutes. Merci beaucoup.

“Carte Noire Recette filmée” #1 #2 & #3 / Dir. Michael Roulier and Philippe Lhomme

Putting “Animation or food or something else” on the title, it was about time I give you some food. Here’s a mouth-watering serie of filmed french dessert receipes. It’s commissioned by Carte Noire (french coffee brand) with big guns for the making (BBDO Agency). Cleverly picked tandem of directors Michael Roulier and Philippe Lhomme are definitely not newcomers in the business : click here to see their reel but careful : don’t do that before eating or buying food. You’d be sorry. Flawless directing, the best crispy sound effects, music a bit too kiddy, maybe to tone down the sinister posh black feeling of it all. Note you won’t really be able to make those receipes as they don’t give the ingredients. Less work, more contemplation.

Takashi OHASHI (大橋史) : animator

Very refined (and smiling) animator from Japan ! Graphical and highly constructed motions, very technical and complex, great ideas that change with what we see all the time - a breather.

Yungsung SONG (송영성) : animator

Discreet and young Korean artist with an excellent ear, YungSung is making his way up with talented pieces like “Part Blue” just below. He makes us literally “see” music thanks to his art.

Max HATTLER : moving image artist

Max is a multi talented / awarded German artist who started with music and gradually wandered towards video- good for us !! He know teaches at Goldsmiths.
