Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Welcome to Missions Fest Seattle 2016, sponsored by over 70 area churches. This is our eleventh year gathering as the greater Church to support and equip each other in our mandate to bring the Gospel to the nations. We are putting feet to the Lord’s Prayer for “His Kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

Each year, we get closer and closer to fulfi ll-ing our biblical mandate to make disciples of all nations and we couldn’t be more excited about that! Our heart is to bring to-gether the Church, resource individuals and see more workers answering God’s call to the ripe harvest fi elds of the world. Yet we know there is still much work remaining to be done, and in an ever-changing world, our mission strategies must be equally dynamic.

Our focus this year is on one of the biggest issues facing our world today. We are in the midst of the largest global people move-ment since World War II. We are confronted with the issues of immigration, migration and refugees on a daily basis, and our chal-lenge as followers of Jesus is discerning how to respond. Do we see these issues as problems that affront our way of life, or do we see them as divine opportunities? It is undeniable that we are amidst a great Global Disruption, but have we stopped to ask what God is doing through it?

In 2015 alone, over 1.3 million migrants claimed asylum in Europe with another 2 million in Turkey. The UN estimates that there are currently well over 15 million refugees worldwide, with over 80% com-ing from countries where Christians face signifi cant persecution. When you include internally displaced peoples, the number approaches 56 million people. The US received almost 70,000 refugees last year, with just under 1000 settling in the Seattle area. This is the reality of the world we live in today, and in all these statistics, the

possibilities for the spread of the Gospel are endless!

Think back to the early days of the book of Acts. Jerusalem was occupied by a foreign military and fi lled with people from all over the Mediterranean world. The religious es-tablishment was hunting, imprisoning and killing followers of Jesus. Not to mention that the entire region was under constant threat of being taken over by neighboring nations. The church was birthed amidst great disruption. No sooner was the church born than it was faced with serious perse-cution that caused Christians to fl ee their homeland for fear of their lives. Disruption

was uncomfortable, disconcerting, and scary. As a result, the Gospel spread rapidly throughout the Roman world and the church experienced one of its greatest periods of growth in history. God uses disruption!

Jesus is clear about how we are to respond to the needs of our time, to the hungry, the sick and the stranger: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” We need God’s heart when it comes to the world we face today. People are on the move and the world is changing, but our mandate to make disciples of all na-tions remains the same. Just as he used dis-ruption to establish the early church, might God be using this latest global disruption to fulfi ll the task of the Great Commission?

Stephan Bauman is past President of World Relief, an international relief and development organization partnering with the global Church to serve more than fi ve million vulnerable people each year. World Relief is also the founder and convener of The Justice Conference.

Stephan’s pursuit of justice led him to transition from a successful career in the Fortune 100 sector to Africa where he di-rected relief and development programs for nearly a decade before returning to the United States to lead World Relief’s global operations. Stephan lives to see people everywhere rise to the call of jus-tice and give their lives in ways that em-power the poor towards real change, a journey he continues to pursue. Stephan holds degrees from Johns Hopkins Uni-versity, Wheaton College and the Univer-sity of Wisconsin. He is a poet, an author, an ordained minister and a strategist. He considers his African friends his most important teachers, and his wife, Belinda, his most important mentor. Stephan, Belinda, and their two sons, Joshua and Caleb, live near Washington, D.C., and, together, enjoy the woods, the arts and late night conversations with friends.

President Castleberry is a graduate of Evangel University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Columbia University, where he completed a Doctor of Education degree in International Educational Development. He is the author of several popular books and a frequent speaker at conferences and churches around the world. His latest book, The New Pilgrims: How Immigrants are Renewing America’s Faith and Values addresses one of America’s most pressing spiritual, social, and political issues.

He is a Fellow of the Africa Leadership Ini-tiative and a Lausanne Movement Catalyst (Senior Associate). Yaw currently resides in Montreal, Canada with his dear wife Anyele and four delightful children: Agyina, Ashede, Adwenepa and Ahotew. He owes all this to Christ Jesus.

Dr. Yaw PerbiPresident, International Student Ministries

An ordained minister, Dan pastored churches in the United States, Germany and France for 25 years. His ministry was shaped by a passion to see the local church live out Christ’s instruction in Acts 1:8, “Be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” Throughout his years of ministry Dan’s been guided by the conviction that a church will be spiritually healthy to the extent it follows that blueprint for sharing the Good News.

In addition to pastoral ministry, Dan has been extensively involved in mobilizing the church through work with Christian non-profi t organiza-tions. He served as the Executive Director of World Relief Seattle “WRS”, the largest refugee resettlement agency in Washington State. Prior to his role at WRS, Dan worked at the US headquarters of World Vision, in Federal Way, WA, where he was responsible for developing partnerships between the organiza-tion and churches throughout western Washington. Dan was also the founder and Executive Director of Urban Mission Alliance, a Christian and Missionary Alliance initiative focused on engaging Seattle-area C&MA churches in urban ministries. In such roles, Dan’s desire has been to see the church educated and empowered to effectively reach those outside its own four walls.

Dan received his education at Crown College (MN), Seattle Pacifi c University and Fuller Theological Semi-nary. In addition, he has done post-graduate work at SCUPE in Chicago, IL. Dan and his wife, Marcy, have three grown sons. His personal interests include hik-ing, travel, music (listening!), gardening, photography and hanging out with his dog, Moose.

In October 1970, Vaughn and Rosella with their son, sailed on a Dutch freighter from San Francisco to Indonesia. OMF International was our Mission Family. Jesus was calling, “Follow Me” and that led us to an unreached and resistant ethnic group in Sumatra for the next 28 years. The government never allowed us to live in this unreached people’s group (UPG) home-land, but we made our base in the next province.

The priority in the fi rst years was to translate the Scriptures. The priority of the last years was distribu-tion, a greater challenge. We also mentored disciples of Jesus, to instill a vision for their neighbor UPGs. We would take ministry forays into the UPG province in our ‘Blue Blob’, a redesigned pick-up truck, holding 20 young Indonesians.

These years were very precious and painful with our 3 children away at boarding school. It was hard and good, scary and encouraging. At times we wondered what we were accomplishing. Today national believers are serving in this UPC province through ‘creative access’ platforms. The translated scriptures slip in and around the hidden network of believers.

Jesus’ fi nal call for Vaughn’s personal ‘translation’ came in 2008 via Alzheimer’s. Rosella’s life is fi lled with family, friendships with International students, and encouraging prayer for the world.

Just as Elijah passed his mantle on to Elisha in olden days, this occasion has been created to likewise have the senior generation give their blessing to a younger set.

BATON CEREMONY

Don grew up in England during WWII. Coming to faith in Christ at age 18, he served in the air force, attended missionary training in Glasgow, Scotland, then sailed to Singapore in 1959, as a new recruit with Overseas Missionary Fellow-ship (OMF Int’l), then on to Laos in September of that year, where he served for 15 years in basic church-planting ministry, learning the Lao language and also Ta-Oi, a Mon Khmer tribal language.

Martha was born in California but, along with her 3 brothers, grew up in East Africa, where her parents served with AIM in Tanzania. She attended and graduated from Rift Valley Acad-emy in Kenya in 1957. She graduated from SPU and UW in nursing, then attended Multnomah U for Bible. Her goal was to return to Africa as a missionary nurse but, instead, the Lord directed her to OMF Int’l. She arrived in Thailand August 1965. Following a year’s initial Thai language study, Martha worked in OMF’s medical leprosy program in Central Thailand. Don and Martha were married in January 1969 in Bangkok. They continued serving the Lord in Laos until 1975 when the communist forces took complete control of the country and all missionaries had to evacuate. Later that year, they moved to Maehongson province, the NW tip of Thailand, to join a small team working with the Shan people, strongly animistic-Bud-dhist and resistant to the Gospel, and served in a pastoral/teaching capacity with small groups of believers until retirement the end of 1998. Since then, the Wilsons have continued to serve the Lord in their home church, with OMF and in their local neighborhood in West Seattle.

Howard is the son of Canadian missionaries who went to Ethiopia when he was only two years old. He says, “I learned most of what I know about the Gospel and Missions on the back of my daddy’s mule,” in Ethiopia. When communism broke out in the country, they elected to stay until they were driven out. When everything they had was taken by the communists, Howie became their prisoner. After release, they left the Gurage people (an unreached people group in Southern Ethiopia), with just a handful of believ-ers and six small churches.

From Ethiopia, the Brants moved to Ghana where they pioneered among the Builsa, Mampursi, and another totally unreached people group known as the Koma. They successfully planted churches in all three groups. With family concerns, they returned to the States, where Howard obtained a Doctorate of Missiology and Jo-Ann pursued her PhD in Anthropology.

SIM Int’l headquarters was their next stop, with Howard assigned to open up SIM’s work throughout Asia, and Jo-Ann served in admin. SIM was involved in 15 countries of the world when they arrived and during their two decades there, SIM work had grown to 46 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. (Today SIM is in 75 nations.)

Upon “retirement” from SIM, the Brants moved to Kenya, then back to Ethiopia where they had started…but now, after 35 years away, there were over 200 churches and 100,000 believers among the Gurage people. The crying need was for a Bible School among all these new believers. The Brants spent their closing years with the Gurage church…building a beautiful Bible College.

They settled back in the NW in 2014, taking trips to Ethiopia, helping facilitate Ethiopian missionaries through the world and writing…ACTS: Courageous Witness in a Hostile World, published in English, Amharic, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

Brants have three children, two are missionaries (Jordan and Ger-many), and one is with the US military. They feel blessed in that their children and grandchildren all love Jesus.

The writer of Hebrews listed O.T. people in God’s Hall-of-Faith. As a part of His family we would also like to recognize a few of the many NW individuals/couples who have been faithful to Him in a full-time missional way for many years. We are privileged to honor and thank them for their past and continuing service on our behalf. They will symbolically pass their blessing and encouragement on to a younger generation...

Peter Chin is the lead pastor of Rainier Avenue Church located in Seattle, a multi-ethnic and multi-generational congregation located in one of the most diverse zip codes of the United States. His work in urban churches and with racial reconciliation issues has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR and CBS Sunday Morning.

Peter’s passion for serving multi-eth-nic urban populations is refl ected in the ministries of Rainier Avenue Church. A congregation which includes immigrants from numerous countries as well as refugees from

Southeast Asia, the church has recently begun a ground-breaking ministry which provides extensive assistance for new refugees arriving in Seattle. With tremendous vision and leadership, Peter has provided guidance for the Rainier Avenue Church family to respond to the realities of the world that are now to be found in their own neighborhoods.

Pastor Chin was the fi rst columnist of color for Christian-ity Today, where he wrote the “Third Culture” column, examining issues of Christian faith from a minority perspective. He is also the author of Blindsided By God, a memoir of his wife’s fi ght against breast cancer while pregnant with their third child.

The son of Korean immigrants, Peter grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Yale University and Fuller Seminary. Peter now lives in Seattle, Washington, with his wife, Carol, and their fi ve children.

Recipients: A younger generation

These four of the younger generation who have been selected to receive these batons are committed to serving the Lord within their respective callings. They and their families would appreciate our prayers for the journeys ahead of them. The in-dividuals recognized represent the many dedicated Washingtonians who are telling the Greatest-Story-Ever-Told both stateside and abroad. To all of them, we offer our encouragement, bless-ings and prayers.

Friday and Saturday Evening General Sessions

Brandon and Marcie Brazee, along with their two children, Kaitlyn and Hudson, will deploy as Foursquare missionaries to Germany in the spring of 2017.

They plan to serve with the Foursquare Germany national church for a couple of years, ministering to refugees, learn-ing the language and culture, and identifying and invest-ing in young leaders. Following that time, they will plant a church in either Berlin or Munich.

Brandon grew up in Seattle and Marcie is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They met while serving as youth leaders at Eastside Foursquare Church in Bothell, WA. Brandon and Marcie have since served as church planters in Madison, Wisconsin, before spending 10 years on staff back at East-side Foursquare in various pastoral roles. Their daughter Kaitlyn is 7 and their son Hudson is 10 months.

P.S. Brandon has been involved with Missions Feat Seattle for many years and currently is on the Executive Commit-tee. We will miss his wise and humble leadership in many areas, including that of being our conference Chairman for the past two years.

Antionio is a fellow who’s accomplished much in his young life. He’s coordinated a summer school camp for 600 children, planted churches, served as an Olympic Games chaplain, developed a community center, written a book and loves photography.

Maria and Antonio are now embarking on a new venture…working together with the Refugee European Crisis in Spain. Maria’s passion for the traffi cked girls has taken her to the streets of Malaga to bring the hope of the gospel with word and deeds. Maria has been a business owner for many years, and she worked part of her life as an emigrant in France. Her compassion comes from a deep under-standing of the pain these girls have experienced and from a pastoral heart.

Nearly three decades have passed since Ron and Shirley DeVore followed a vision to reach the lost of the world in Uganda, East Africa and launched World Outreach Min-istry Foundation (WOMF). The vision of WOMF has now expanded over the last 30 years into 10 nations, planting churches, schools, orphanages, medical clinics, and much more. The mission grew and they were joined by many men and women sharing the same vision. Two of these early families were Ed and Marcy Pohlreich and Scott and Brenda Volz.

Ed and Marcy spent part of their fi rst year of marriage in Uganda and eventually moved to Uganda. The desire of their hearts…“ to see all come to know the love of Jesus in a powerful way.”

Close friends, Scott and Brenda Volz, came to visit them and their work in Uganda. A year later they returned with

their family to serve for three months and then perma-nently. They wanted to see people’s lives transformed and moved into their full potential in Christ.

With the DeVores getting up in their years, Scott took on the leadership role in Africa as Chief Operations Offi cer, while Ed became the CEO and Chairman of the Board of WOMF back here in the Northwest.

On March 28, 2016, Ed and Scott, along with Stephen Kaw-eesa, a national leader, were killed in a fatal car accident in Uganda. This has been a tremendously diffi cult time for these families and WOMF. Marcy and Brenda both feel a desire in their hearts that they should continue the vision of their husbands, along with a great team of leaders.

SATURDAY EVENING

The Kenya Community Interna-tional Church was established in 2001 and meets at 4:00 Sunday afternoons at the Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church, 9656 Waters Ave S. in Seattle’s Rainier Valley. Their service is mostly in Swahili. The Rev. Geoffrey Wanyoike is pastor. The congregation has purchased land in Kent and they dream of building their own facil-ity so they can have services in English, Swahili and Kikuyu.

The Seattle Chinese Gospel Chorale was founded in 1985 with the purpose of spreading the gospel through music. The group has 21 singers, a pianist and the director, Irene Liao Lee. They come from ten different churches in the greater Seattle area. They sing regularly in the Pacific Northwest, Cali-fornia and Vancouver, B.C. In recent years they have sung in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

The Choralons of Northwest University in Kirkland, with 120 members, are directed by Professor Brenda Rasmussen. They sing in churches and events around the northwest and tour during spring break. Their most recent choir tour was to Las Vegas. In addition to singing in several churches along the way, they assisted in the Teen Challenge ministry in Las Vegas.

This weekend will deepen your relationship with Jesus and help you explore what it is like to be a “missionary,” as in, go-missionary, send-missionary, welcoming-mis-sionary, prayer-mobilizer-mission-ary, and missions-mobilizer-mis-sionary. Discover whether a goer, sender, welcomer, mobi-lizer, and/or prayer-mobilizer role is God’s fi t for you, and connect with mission agencies and mobilizers who will expose you to more.

The core of the retreat and the key distinctive is the small discus-sion groups made up of seeking missionaries like you and missions coaches, who meet four times throughout the weekend. The re-treat has small groups for college

students, young adults, mid-lif-ers, baby boomers, and anyone willing to explore becoming a “missionary.” Meet others like yourself and compare maps on the journey. Discuss your compass with missions coaches

who have journeyed into differ-ent kinds of missions already. Attendance is purposely kept under 40 people so you will have plenty of opportunity for per-sonal interaction with coaches and other participants.

Who Should Attend The Journey Deepens Retreats?People who describe themselves

as being “stuck” learn next steps to take in their journey. Oth-ers are affi rmed in the process of steps they’ve already taken. Some learn they are not yet ready and need more preparation before going to serve in missions.

Mobilizers, senders, and goers are identifi ed. At each retreat, personal journeys undoubtedly deepen with Jesus Christ and

His body.

If you sense that God is calling you to missions, but are unsure what that might look like or how to proceed; if you are “stuck” but know that you want to respond to the Holy Spirit prompting you to journey deeper with our Lord, then The Journey Deepens Re-treat is a good step for you.

God has a “world-sized” role for every Christian in His global purpose.Whether people go to distant countries or stay at home is a secondary issue. The primary issue is what most people are hungry to discover: vision to live a life of purpose. Discovering that vision makes this course valuable, and perhaps crucial, for any Christian.

Perspectives is a fi fteen week course designed around four vantage points or “perspectives” — Biblical, Historical, Cultural and Strategic. Each one highlights different aspects of God’s global purpose. The Bib-lical and Historical sections reveal why our confi dence is based on the historic fact of God’s relentless work from the dawn of history until this day. The Cultural and Strategic sections underscore that we are in the midst of a costly, but very “do-able” task, confi rming the Biblical and Historical hope.

long time participant in Missions Fest Seattle, passed away on November 1, 2015, at the age of 97. Years ago, his daughter, Heather Ewald, compiled his favorite stories, sayings and words of wisdom into a binder, “Smile, Laugh, and Live the Abundant Life.” Following are excerpts.

humor is not an end in itself, but a means whereby I try to arouse interest in things that the average person does not think about; namely, where will I be when I leave this world? Or, where will I spend eternity?

cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition.

is something that adds to your face value.

don’t care how much you know until they see how much you care.

listen, God speaks; when we obey, God works.

step to maturity is often the discovery that the volume knob on the TV can be turned left.

poverty is never a strain on God’s provision.

Know it in your head; Stow it in your heart; Show it in your life; Sow it in the world.

of the hardest things in life is to know which bridge to burn and which one to cross.

your plans with pencil and give God the eraser.

You have fed your body well all week. Give your soul at least a bone on Sunday.

too late to start over – it’s always too soon to quit.

did Jesus appear to the women fi rst? It would speed up the message of His resurrection.

really happy person is the one who enjoys the scenery, even in a detour.

altar would alter many a family.

has time for you, do you have time for Him?

the darkness in the world cannot put out the light of a candle.

professing Christians speak about them-selves through an amplifi er, but about God through a muffl er.

the devil reminds you of your past, remind him of his future.

is like a roll of toilet paper – the nearer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

a funny thing that skating on thin ice can get you into hot water.

are feeling sad and blue, look at the oak tree and see what a little nut can do.

fl unk you…He just re-enrolls you.

Jesus says that He is “preparing a place for us in heaven.” I really would like to see you there. Remember Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

New Light Christian Church is a multiethnic, inner city Ministry cen-tered around the strong teaching of God’s Word in order to glorify Him. We do this through the ministry of healing the family, spreading the Gospel in our com-munity, breaking down multicultural barriers and drawing all mem-bers closer to God. We believe in worship, study-ing His Word and prayer.

Acknowledgements

Above all, we give God the glory and thank the Holy Spirit for guid-ance during our planning and carrying out of this conference. May the Lord be praised with the preparation and outcome. Let us be renewed and reminded of our theme this year... GLOBAL DISRUPTION. We are grateful for the many “partners” Missions Fest Seattle brings together, all working for the glory of God, as we seek to fulfi ll Christ’s one, over-reaching mission – His Great Commission for each of us individually and together.

We are so very appreciative for the warm reception which longtime sponsoring church, Westminster Chapel, has extended to Missions Fest Seattle. This is a major undertaking. A special thanks goes to Senior Pastor Gary Gulbranson, Beyond Minister Sylvia Ramquist, Tiffany Sanders Communications Coordinator, Darrel Claussen Facilities Foreman, Brendan Erazo Technical Director and the entire West-minster Chapel staff. We say “thank you” for being a great witness, both locally and globally. We honor you, your congregation and your ministries.

For the past 10 years, Missions Fest Seattle has been a success due to many contributing factors. To our sponsoring congregations, and all who attend this no-cost gathering, a most grateful thank you and bless you for your faithful support of this effort to get the Gospel of Christ out. To those organi-zations hosting exhibit booths and sponsoring ads in this magazine, much thanks. We also deeply appreciate our Keynote Speakers and Seminar leaders, as well as our conference volunteers.

There is an organizing Missions Fest Seattle Leadership Team and an Executive Committee that meet monthly to plan and organize this outreach. They make up the sub-committees listed below. Thanks to all the volunteers and each and every one, for all your prayers, time and efforts. We are always look-ing for new people who have a heart for missions and are kingdom minded. If you would like to join our team please contact us.

Leadership Team of Missions Fest Seattle:

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)
