Time to LearnWelcome to the 2012-2013 Adult and Continuing Education, Evening and Part-time courses prospectus. As you

work your way through the various programmes, I hope that you will find at least one course that meets your

requirements.

The intention of the team within the Department of Adult and Continuing Education is to offer programmes that

reflect a learning area that might be of interest to you.

While the recession and austerity may remain for some time to come, we are all beginning to recognise again that

there will be a future for us in this economy or the global economy. It is definitely therefore our Time to Learn –

to take control of our own future. Indeed, it will be through this learning, that we will improve our own personal

circumstances and eventually that of our economy, as we acquire the relevant skills and knowledge to leapfrog

into a future where austerity, recession, and high levels of unemployment will be distant thoughts, mentioned

only in history and economic texts.

Indeed, it is this vision that has caused us to remind you that it is your ‘Time to Learn’. And, it is our hope that the

programmes on offer will motivate you to commence a new learning chapter in your life, irrespective of whether

you have or have not engaged in third level learning before. Throughout the design of this prospectus, it has been

our intention to offer programmes of learning meeting the requirements of all learning levels and abilities.

As you review the prospectus you will find programmes for those of you that wish to commence learning at third

level for the first time. An example is the ‘Learning to Learn’ single subject module offered at only €90, that will

give you the skills to take on a higher level course next year. For those of you who wish to start a Higher Certificate

or Degree now, there are a range of undergraduate programmes on offer; for those of you that have some third level

learning, such as a Higher Certificate, or Level 7 ordinary degrees, there are a number of add-on degrees available.

Indeed, if you have a degree already, why not consider a postgraduate programme such as a Higher Diploma or a

Masters by Research? All are available within this prospectus on a part-time, flexible basis, enabling you to learn

in a manner to suit your lifestyle.

In order to support you in taking your first step, the Department of Adult & Continuing Education is part-funding two

programmes to support you, namely Learning to Learn and Become Assertive and Improve your Self Esteem and

Confidence (see opposite page 6). Their objective is to ensure that you are fully prepared when it is your ‘Time to

Learn’. Given this, we do hope that as you browse the prospectus in hard copy or online at www.ait.ie, that you find

a programme that meets your requirements. When you do, you can either register by contacting the Department

directly or through attending the Information and Registration Evening on Thursday 6th September. Please note

the closing date for applications is Tuesday 11th September 2012.

I look forward to meeting you at the Department and engaging with you as you achieve your ambitions in partnership

with us in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and the broader AIT community, ensuring that you

begin your new learning this September.

For all of us it is ‘Time to Learn’.

See you in September.

Welcome from the PresidentHow people engage with third level education has changed dramatically in recent times. One in six

students across all higher education institutions is studying on a part-time basis, while within the

institutes of technology, this figure is even higher at one in five. At AIT, one-quarter of students are

studying on what’s termed a flexible basis, that is, part-time, distance learning, etc.

While these numbers indicate the scale of part-time and continuing education, they also point to the wide

range of options facing people, whether it is to study at postgraduate or undergraduate level, or indeed

for a CPD or recreational qualification.

It’s fair to say that the traditional image of a student being someone who finishes their Leaving Certificate

and goes on to college no longer holds true. That’s still an important part of the picture, but those who

travel long distances and devote their evenings and weekends to attending lectures, undertaking projects

and conducting research has added greatly to the vibrancy of our campus.

As we continue to battle with this recession, it is encouraging to see that so many people appreciate the

value of a third level qualification. While there are signs that the worst is behind us, there is no time like

the present for making a positive decision about your future and choosing to undertake a course at AIT.

This prospectus of part-time programmes opens up a door to a world of opportunity. There is an

enormous range of course offerings here, with a growing number of academic qualifications now

available. The staff in our Department of Adult and Continuing Education will be able to answer questions

you may have in relation to any matter.

The rest is up to you. Be assured however that an investment in education is not just something that

yields a return in terms of enhanced skills and knowledge, improved self-confidence and a sense of

satisfaction. Undoubtedly it is all of those things; but above all, it is an investment in your future.

Best of luck with your search – and welcome to the AIT community.

Athlone Institute of Technology

Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) is the only

higher education institution in the Midlands of Ireland.

established in 1970, it has expanded in size, scope

and influence over the period. There are some 6,000

full-time and part-time students in AIT studying a broad

range of courses offered by the institute’s four schools

of business, engineering, humanities and science.

Programmes are available at undergraduate and

postgraduate level.

The principal aim of the Institute is to build on its

strengths to become a college of choice for learners

and staff regionally, nationally and internationally.

A new strategic plan for the Institute which sets out a

vision to 2013, establishes a series of ambitious targets

including increasing student numbers by 40 per cent,

developing e-platforms for students, generating research

income of €10 million per annum, and increasing

collaboration across the higher education and industry

sectors.

Approximately €100 million has been invested in

AIT’s campus since 2000, with a new Engineering

and Informatics Building opening in September 2010.

A new postgraduate research hub also opened recently,

while the institute’s new track and field facilities are

garnering considerable acclaim.

In accordance with its increasing student intake, the

Institute has developed rapidly since its foundation.

The main campus is situated approximately 2km from

the town centre on the Dublin Road.

The Institute currently offers an extensive range

of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to

students, which has been a factor in attracting industries

to the town. AIT is an important contributor to the local

economy and to the shaping of Athlone’s future.

About our ProgrammesThe following taught programmes are available at

the Institute through the Department of Adult and

Continuing Education:

1. Hobby/Recreational Courses

2. Professional Development Courses

3. Professional Institute Courses

4. Third level Academic Courses:

• Higher Certificate (Level 6)

1) Hobby/Recreational Courses

Generally theses courses take place one evening per

week over a period of 8-10 weeks. Participants will learn

new skills in the relevant area, but the focus of these

courses is on the enjoyment of the learning. Participants

who attend more than 75% of the scheduled classes will

receive an Institute Certificate of Attendance on request.

Examples of these courses are Make Up Tips & Tricks and

Hands on Practical Cookery.

2) Professional Development Courses

These courses are similar in format and duration to

the Hobby/Recreational Courses, however the focus

of the learning is applied to skills that will help the

participants in their working life, for example Presentation

and Communication Skills and Web Design & Development.

Participants who attend more than 75% of the scheduled

3) Professional Institute Courses

The Department of Adult and Continuing Education

deliver some courses in conjunction with Professional

Bodies, such as the Association of Certified Chartered

Accountants. The relevant Professional Body dictates

the syllabus to be taught by AIT. In the majority of cases

students have to register with and pay registration/

examination fees to the relevant Professional Body as

register with and pay tuition fees to AIT. This is detailed

in the relevant course details in this prospectus. The

examinations for these courses are set and managed

by the relevant Professional Body, but generally the

examinations take place in AIT or in the surrounding

area.

4) Third Level Academic Courses

When you apply to AIT you will note that many of our Third

Level Academic Programmes are available through two

modes of delivery: the ladder system or the ab initio route.

Page 13: Adult and Continuing Education prospectus 2012/2013

We

lc

OM

e

11www.ait.ie

The ladder system, also referred to as add-on, describes

where you can progress from one qualification to a

higher-level award. For example, if you obtain a higher

certificate (Level 6), you may progress to an ‘add-on’

ordinary Bachelor’s degree (Level 7) and subsequently

to an honours Bachelor’s degree (Level 8). The levels

refer to the standing of the award on the National

Framework of Qualifications. The ladder system gives

you considerable flexibility to sample a discipline for

two years, to change direction in your studies, to take

time out between qualifications to work, and to move

between one institution and another as you climb the

ladder. The diagram below shows how the ‘ladder’

system of qualifications operates at AIT.

The alternative path toward obtaining a qualification is

known as ab initio. This is the Latin for ‘from the

beginning’. It describes programmes which allow you to

progress directly to award stage. For example, if you

undertake an ab initio (honours) Bachelor’s degree, you

receive that qualification on successful completion of

the relevant four-year programme.

Many of the courses are offered through a number of

different modes: Full-time, Part-time, Day-release and

ACCS. The Institute’s courses are also recognised by a

number of professional bodies for the purposes of

exemptions. On the professional accountancy courses

for example, recognition and exemptions are gained

from the appropriate professional organisations.

The courses offered by the Institute service the current

and future needs of Ireland’s industrial, commercial and

social sectors, while at the same time meeting the

highest national and international standards.

Award Titles

A parallel system of referring to awards is in place: one

refers to the level of the award, while the other is for

its formal title. The National Qualifications Authority

of Ireland (NQAI) established a framework for the

development, recognition and award of qualifications

based on standards of knowledge, skill or competence

acquired by learners. The National Framework of

Qualifications provides a level for every award made

in the jurisdiction, which are as follows:

• Higher Certificate (Level 6)

• Ordinary Degree (Level 7)

• Honours Degree (Level 8)

• Masters Degree (Level 9)

• Higher Diploma (Level 8 – Postgraduate)

Awarding Bodies/Course Accreditation

The courses offered at AIT reflect the current and future

needs of Ireland’s industrial and commercial sectors,

while at the same time meeting the highest national and

international standards and gaining recognition and

exemptions from the appropriate professional bodies.

National Framework of Qualifications – further details available from www.nqai.ie

12 www.ait.ie

AIT is proud of the fact that its academic standards

are independently and internationally recognised as

being of the highest quality. As a result, the institute

is empowered by HETAC, the Irish national awarding

body for higher education, to confer its own (HETAC-

accredited) awards up to Level 9 taught programmes

and for Level 9 research awards.

As a part-time student, you would normally expect

to gain 30 ECTS credits in a semester or 60 ECTS

credits in a full academic year. To support lifelong

learning, however, we will facilitate registration within

a range of ECTS credits and it is proposed that you

can register on as little as 5 ECTS credits.

Some of our courses are accredited by Professional

Institutes, for example our accountancy courses are

accredited by the Association of Certified Chartered

Accountants (ACCA). In instances where this is the case,

it is clearly noted in the individual course descriptions.

Work/Clinical Placements

Placements are a common (and sometimes mandatory)

feature of many of our educational programmes.

These work experience opportunities provide you with

academic and employment benefits not possible in an

exclusively college environment. As well as offering

exposure to current work practices in industry, industrial

placements provide a means by which you can practise

the skills and apply the knowledge you have acquired in

college, as well as undertake structured research within

a teamwork situation. Industrial placement requirements

are detailed within the particular programme

information.

Garda Vetting Requirements

A number of academic programmes offered by the

Department of Adult and Continuing Education require

students to undertake placements that will bring them

into contact with children or vulnerable adults, and in

which they may assume positions of trust.

To ensure the protection of the public and to justify

public trust and confidence, the Department of Adult

and Continuing Education is committed to ensuring that

only suitable candidates are allowed to undertake these

programmes. All students should be aware that some

courses are subject to successful completion of work

placement. In order to commence work placement, each

student will be responsible for providing information

to the Institute of their suitability for such courses.

This will include obtaining Garda vetting and may

include medical assessment and provision of personal

references relating to suitability for placement. Failure

to meet Institute requirements in this regard may make

completion of the programme impossible and thus

students would be unable to obtain an award. Students

are advised that obtaining relevant approval for

placement can take up to 6 months, and so students

contemplating advanced entry to relevant courses

may need to consider this matter prior to attending

the programmes offered by the Department.

The current legal minimum age for sole application

for Garda vetting is 18 years of age. In the event of

an applicant being between 16 and 18 years of age,

written consent is also required from a parent or

guardian. Garda vetting requires information on all

previous residences to be provided. Students who have

resided outside the Republic of Ireland are advised that

details of all such residences with accurate dates of

residence will be required for the Garda vetting process.

you may be exempt from certain modules or stages in a

related academic programme.

For example if you have previously completed a Higher

Certificate in Arts, which contains modules such as

Financial Accounting and Human Resource Management,

and you now wish to pursue a Higher Certificate in

Business Studies, you can have your previous syllabus

reviewed, and if the Learning Outcomes are comparable

you may be granted an exemption from these subjects.

This means that you will not need to be examined in

these subjects again.

There is an exemption application fee of €50 which is

payable on application.

The procedure for applying for exemptions is as follows:

• Identify the course you wish to apply for.

• Complete the four page academic course application

form.

• Return this along with a detailed syllabus, and

detailed transcripts of results from your previous

studies, along with a cover letter stating what

exemptions you wish to apply for to the Department

of Adult & Continuing Education along with fee.

• The Head of Department of Adult and Continuing

Education will then assess your application, and you

will receive official notification of exemptions granted.

• You can then choose if you wish to avail of granted

exemptions.

If your application is successful and you avail of awarded

exemptions, the €50 exemption fee will be deducted

from your overall exemption fee.

The fees for exemption are as follows:

• Individual modules – the fee for the module is reduced

by 50%.

• In the event of a student gaining an exemption from

a full year of programme the fee payable for this

exemption is €750.

The closing date for exemption application is Friday

17 August 2012. For registered and attending students

there is a late closing date of Friday 19 October 2012.

For further details on making a exemption assessment

application please contact the Department of Adult &

Continuing Education.

Recognition of Prior Learning – Recognising Your Previous Work and LearningAre you an adult learner with experience in the

workplace? If so, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

can get you a ‘headstart’ in your desired programme

of study, through exemptions and advanced entry.

Through RPL, AIT ensures that you can get credit

for what you have already completed.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the system for

crediting students for “on the job” learning, through

training (certified or non-certified) or through a variety

of other sources.

Hundreds of mature learners have benefitted from this

system to date.

RPL includes:

(i) Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning: Where

an applicant has already been awarded a certificate

for a formal programme taken at another institution

or training organisation.

(ii) Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning:

This involves the awarding of credit for learning

from experience.

The cost of the RPL process is 75% of the individual

module fee.

In the event of a student gaining an exemption from

a full year of programme following the RPL process:

the fee payable for this exemption is €750

The closing date for RPL application is Friday 17 August

2012. For registered and attending students there is a

late closing date of Friday 19 October 2012.

Learning application please contact the Department

Mnemonics – The Art of MemoryYou know what it’s like to forget someone’s name. Or you

may have forgotten appointments, telephone numbers,

speeches, punchlines of jokes, directions, or best of all:

your spouse’s birthday! You might feel like the man

dancing at the Amnesiacs Annual Ball, saying to the

woman, Do I come here often?

If you feel that enough is enough, here is your chance

to change that. In this course you can learn to jump-start

your memory. You can learn how to remember numbers,

numbers of any length; to memorise your shopping list

will become second nature to you, or for that matter,

any list.

Imagine: speeches without cue cards, making (and

keeping) appointments without a diary or reducing exam

stress by acquiring enormous amounts of information.

How about learning 1,000 French words within one

week?

All this and much more will be dealt with in the course

Introduction to Assistive Technology for Education

Introduction to Assistive Technology for Education

Assistive technology refers to any item, piece of

equipment or product system that may be used by

a person with a disability to perform specific tasks,

improve functional capabilities and become more

independent. Text to Speech software can enable a

student with a reading difficulty to access their

curriculum books. Mind mapping software can help

students to plan projects and structure assignments.

Voice recognition software can help a student who has

difficulty writing to produce legible text by converting

their spoken word into typed text. Literacy support

software can help students with the spelling,

punctuation, grammar, research and organisation of

their writing as well as reading texts aloud to them

and assisting with understanding difficult words and

homophones which they might otherwise misread.

In a recent study by the Ascent Project 97% of third

level students with specific Learning Difficulty reported

that using assistive technology reduced their need for

help from other people in the completion of learning

tasks. Many of the technologies which students credited

with improving their performance were free or low cost

everyday items of technology such as mobile phones

which became invaluable instruments in their success

once they knew how to make use of them to address

their learning difficulties.

Aim of Course

The aim of the course is to provide training in assistive

technology applications and in the use of documents

which are accessible to students with disabilities. The

knowledge gained from the course will assist participants

to facilitate the use of assistive technology by learners

with disabilities. The course is based on the design for

all approach, which ensures that educational material

is available to the majority of the population, including

those with low literacy levels, but will focus on AT for

specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia,

dyscalculia, ADHD.

Intended for

Teachers, educators and parents of students who

experience difficulty with note-taking, writing, reading,

spelling, grammar, organisation and time management

will benefit from the course by learning more about how

to use technology to help the student overcome these

difficulties to achieve their true potential.

Course Content

• How to make documents accessible – MS word,

Powerpoint, email

• Introduction to literacy support software – Read

and Write Gold

• Mind mapping software – Inspiration

• Reading scanning software – Abbey Fine Reader,

Intel Reader

• Voice recognition software – Dragon naturally

speaking

Bachelor of Arts in Childcare Supervisory Management

NFQ Level 7

Aim of Course

Irish society has seen a growing reliance on childcare

provision. A recent national household survey revealed

that 40 per cent of families with pre-school children rely

on childcare providers to enable them to work. It is also

estimated that there are 38,000 child minders in Ireland.

This degree aims to educate and train students to

be competent childcare managers and supervisors,

responsive to the needs of an evolving childcare

sector in the fluid social environment in which we live.

Graduates will be equipped to manage a childcare

service, as well as run their own childcare business.

The scope of the programme covers child development

and protection, customer service, operations, and

management of childcare facilities, creches, Montessori

schools and playgroups in the context of a modern

professional environment.

Input from guest lecturers will be an integral part of the

programme. Managers of successful childcare facilities

and settings, in addition to the various professional

bodies, will be amongst the speakers on a variety of

specialist topics.

You will also learn how to make an effective contribution

in a variety of work settings, as a result of having developed

the skills of empathy, observation, communication and

objective appraisal. You will also be expected to promote

positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.

Bachelor of Arts in Counselling and Psychotherapy

NFQ Level 7

Please note that that this course is currently under review, and subject to change.

It is envisaged that an Honours Degree (NFQ Level 8) in Counselling and Psychotherapy will be available for September 2012 – please contact the Department of Adult & Continuing Education for details.

This three-year Bachelor of Arts in Counselling and

Psychotherapy provides a comprehensive professional

educational programme. It is designed to promote the

development of knowledge, skills and self-awareness,

not in isolation from one another but in their inter-

related meanings for the whole person. There is

therefore an emphasis on the integration of experience,

understanding and behaviour throughout the course.

The Bachelor of Arts in Counselling and Psychotherapy

training involves experiential work, interacting with

others in role-play and actual client work. It involves

group work in which individual vulnerabilities are often

revealed and worked with. Students give and receive

support from others, which is essential to a safe learning

environment.

Course Philosophy

The educational philosophies are guided by a deep

commitment to the values inherent in the work of

Carl Rogers and subsequent Person Centred theorists

and this shapes the relationship between tutors and

students, with students being encouraged to take

responsibility for their own learning needs whilst

being robustly supported and guided by tutors.

The philosophy of Person Centred Counselling is based

on the affirmation of the dignity of every human being.

It is within the Person Centred counselling tradition that

the core conditions of counselling emerged:

unconditional positive regard, empathy, congruence,

authenticity, caring for the client, phenomenological

assessment strategies, self-discovery, and insight. These

core conditions permit therapeutic intervention in life

areas, which were previously inaccessible, such as love,

hope, meaning of life, loss, relationships, creativity,

holism, spirituality, freedom, transcendence, personal

growth, social justice, multicultural and gender issues,

responsibility, and interdependence.

Aim of Course

The main aim of the Bachelor of Arts in Counselling

and Psychotherapy is to provide participants with the

necessary learning in the field of counselling and

psychotherapy and the opportunity to develop into

competent professional practitioners. This course will

provide a challenging and integrated educational

process in the field of counselling and psychotherapy,

with a range of modules which reflect the best practice

of developments nationally and internationally.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must be over 23 years of age and must

attend Athlone IT for an interview. (Entry requirements
