Welcome to Adult and Community Education in HounslowOur mission is ‘…to deliver high quality accessible learning in response to the needs of individuals, the community and employers’. Even in these difficult economic times we remain committed to this mission and this prospectus sets out a full programme of courses for adults.

For those of you familiar with our prospectus you will see that this year we have a whole ‘new look’. We have made the changes in response to learners’ feedback. Our marketing forum of learners said they wanted: a smaller, handier size booklet; clearer layout of courses divided into terms; contact details for subject areas and for the prospectus to be illustrated with photographs of our own learners. We think we have achieved all this in this new 2010/2011 prospectus and I really hope you find it useful and easy to use.

We offer a range of courses to suit your needs, whether you want to try something new, meet new people, add a new skill to your CV or simply want to enjoy an interesting and rewarding leisure activity – we have a course for you.

Liz MeagherHead of Lifelong Learning

How do I know which level of course to choose?

This prospectus has a complete listing of all planned courses for 2010/2011, together with an overview of the course or programme. If you want to do a qualification course, you will get more detailed information about levels and programmes at your pre-course assessment, but a brief overview of what the levels mean is given below:

Entry and Level 1These courses are for complete beginners, aimed at learners who want to improve their basic skills and get started on a vocational qualification route.

Level 2These courses are suitable for those either seeking to enter a profession or, for NVQ courses for those already working either in paid work or voluntary work. A reasonable level of English and maths is needed to undertake a Level 2 course. Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C grade level.

Level 3Our Level 3 courses are for people either wanting to go on to higher education, or for the Diploma or NVQ courses, those who want to get a higher level qualification and progress in the workplace. Level 3 is equivalent to GCSE ‘A’ level.

Family Learning

For further guidance and advice contact [email protected] or telephone 020 8583 6083/6001.

All family learning classes are free but we do ask that you attend each session. Most courses are held once a week for five weeks, but some last for 10 weeks.

Family learning courses are an excellent stepping stone to further learning. We offer advice and guidance to all adult learners.

Some of the courses are offered at our main Adult Education Centres and local community centres. These courses are advertised in our termly family learning leaflets which are distributed through local schools.

Many of our courses and one-off events are offered at primary schools across the borough. These courses are for families whose children attend that school and in some cases, for families from schools very close by. Please look out for leaflets and newsletters which your child will bring home and for posters in your child’s school.

Enrolment policy for family learning courses

Families may enrol on a maximum of three different courses in one academic year. This allows other families to have their chance to join courses.

Some courses are for families living within certain postcode areas. This is because those families will be able to get to the lessons on time.

There are minimum ages for all family learning courses. This means that you may not bring children below that age to the lessons.

We offer an exciting range of arts and crafts courses to stimulate your imagination and develop your creativity and confidence. You and your child will be proud to take home your creations! Our courses include Pottery, Painting, Sculpture, Arts and Crafts, Printing, Creative Sewing, Funky Jewellery, Mosaics and more.

We have healthy lifestyle courses such as Fun-filled Snacks, Yoga, and Dance. These help to keep you and your child in good shape whilst having great fun together. Our First Aid course will give you and your child those basic essential skills for dealing with emergencies.

Computer courses such as ICT for Adults and Children and Internet Fun, will help you as adults to keep up with your children and give you the knowledge to support your child’s learning. If you are new to computing you will gain useful skills to get yourself started.

Our family learning language courses include German, Arabic, French and Spanish. You and your child can get started with a new language or you can support your child’s learning of your own language. The emphasis is on speaking skills for beginners, everyday situations and the appreciation of cultures.

There are weekend courses to give working parents or carers more of an opportunity to learn and have fun with their children. We have also introduced courses specifically for adults and their pre-teen and teenage children, for example, a variety of professional beauty courses.

For enquiries and enrolment call us on 020 8583 6000.

Family learning is an opportunity for you and your child to learn, gain new skills and have fun together. Mums, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other carers are all welcome to participate with their children. You will be learning new skills for yourself as well as supporting and enriching your child’s learning. You will also gain ideas for continuing activities at home.

Qualification courses are offered in Spanish, Italian, Japanese and British Sign Language. The ABC qualifications are portfolio based courses which allow you to demonstrate how you have developed your knowledge and skills of the language over the duration of the course.

Entry Level 2 Awards ABC

The Entry Level 2 Awards are ideal if you have just started to learn a foreign language and also wish to learn about the culture and gain a qualification. It is advisable to undertake

a ‘Beginners 1 – Get Started’ course in the relevant language first, if you have not studied the language before, to develop your confidence and familiarise yourself with the basic structure of the language.

Certificate Level 1 ABC

If you wish to continue to develop your communication skills and learn more about the culture the Certificate Level 1 provides an ideal progression opportunity.

If you are interested in learning a language for your own development and are unsure of whether you wish to undertake a qualification you can use the guide below to help you select the right level of course.

Beginners 1: Get Started

Start to learn a foreign language. These courses are suitable for complete beginners and introduce you to using the language. The courses provide you with the basic language to communicate in common everyday situations and are a good starting point should you decide to undertake an Entry 2 qualification.

Beginners 2 and 3

These courses are for learners who have completed Beginners 1 or who have some

experience of the language. You will be encouraged to develop your knowledge and confidence so that you can communicate and interact with native speakers and increase your awareness of the culture.

Improvers 1, 2 and 3

For those who have completed the beginners courses or have studied the language recently and wish to become more proficient in communicating in the language.

Language and culture

These courses provide the opportunity to join others in an informal conversational group that discusses historical and contemporary topics. You must have a good command of the language to benefit from this level of course.

Teaching

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) – Level 3

The PTLLS course is a 30 hour theory and practical programme for those interested in teaching in the post-compulsory 16+ sector. It is not a course for those interested in teaching in the primary or secondary schools sector.

The City and Guilds 7303 is the ‘threshold’ to teach in the post-16 sector. It relates to the new professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector set out by Lifelong Learning UK.

The course introduces the basic principles of planning and delivery via a range of tasks covering both the theory and practical aspects of teaching and related legislation. All candidates need to be qualified to at least Level 3 or be able to demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge within the subject area they wish to teach.

This qualification allows all successful candidates to register with the Institute for Learning (IFL) which is now a government requirement for anyone who is looking to teach within the sector.

How can I get information and advice about a course before I enrol?

Many of your questions can be answered by reading the full course information sheet, available for every course in this prospectus. You can get a course information sheet from any of our centres or from our website www.hounslow.gov.uk/adulteducation

If you would like more information and advice our specialist curriculum staff would be pleased to talk to you, via email, telephone or at one of our information and enrolment days (details at the front of this prospectus). The email addresses and contact phone numbers for our curriculum teams are on page 6 and you can also find these details in the relevant section of this prospectus.

If you are not sure what subject you would like, or need, to study you can get impartial careers and training advice from one of our qualified IAG advisers, just call 020 8583 6000 to make an appointment for an individual advice and guidance session.

If you would like help to seek employment, you can receive one to one advice resulting in a personal action plan to get a job. It is not always an easy journey but you can get support and practical help with CVs, application forms and interview skills. Please ring 020 8583 2210 or 020 8583 6004 to make an appointment with an advisor and begin that journey back in to work!

What if I need help with childcare?

Subsidised childcare may be available at one of our crèches at Hounslow Manor, Meadowbank and in some of our outreach venues. However, funding and places are limited and priority is given to learners in receipt of means tested benefits studying for a qualification. Please ask about availability when you enrol.

If a crèche place is not available you may be eligible for financial assistance from central government for childcare while you are studying. Please ask at the centre office or at your pre-course assessment for an application form. If you need help completing this form one of our adult education staff can help you, please call 020 8583 6000 for assistance.

What if I need extra help with my learning?

We aim to make our courses accessible to everyone, and help all our learners to achieve. We can help learners on qualification courses who have learning difficulties or disabilities including:

•Hearingorvisionimpairment

• Learningdifficultiesand/orspecificlearningdisabilities such as dyslexia

• Mobilitydifficultiesegwheelchairusers, learners with limited hand movement etc

•Medicalconditionssuchasasthmaorepilepsy

•Mentalhealthdifficulties

• Speechproblems

Support for Learners

•Reading,writingormathsneeds

• LanguageneedsbecauseEnglishisnotthelearner’s first language

We can provide support inside or outside the classroom or both. A Learning Support Assistant (LSA) may work alongside you to build confidence, take notes, provide extra instruction and interpret, using sign language or possibly your first language.

Outside the class an LSA may help with assignments or building a portfolio.

If, before you enrol, you think you may need additional help to do your course, just ask one of our centre staff for an Additional Learning Support Request Form (a member of staff can help you complete this if you need help, just ask). Your request will be treated confidentially and you will be invited to an assessment by our ALS co-ordinator. If you are on a course and think you need help, talk to your tutor who can arrange an assessment for you.

Do you have computers I can use out of class time?

ICT rooms in our dedicated centres are available to learners to come in and use a computer out of class time, when courses are not running. We also have computers in the Latimer Lounge at our Meadowbank Centre which can be used at any time the centre is open, it’s advisable to phone to book in advance. Information on access to computer rooms is available at centres, please ask at reception or ask your tutor about this.

Help with fees

Can you help if I cannot afford the fees?

If you are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to meet all the costs of your course, please ask the staff at the main centre and they will be able to advise you about our Discretionary Learner Support Funding, which is available for certain qualification courses.

Can I pay by instalments?

If courses cost more than £200 and you cannot pay the whole fee at enrolment you can pay the fee in instalments, with an initial payment of 30% of the course fee.

If you are paying by instalments you will receive an invoice from the London Borough of Hounslow and all payments will need to be paid according to the instructions on the reverse of the invoice. Please ask at enrolment for further details. Please note that you are still liable for the course fees even if you withdraw from the course.

Grants and allowances

If you are not working or claiming any benefits you may be entitled to the Adult Learning Grant (ALG) for those over 19 or Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for those 16-19. Please ask at one of our centres for further information.
