DIRECTOR’S

MESSAGE Jillian Guthman-Abadom, Esq.,

Director of Human Services

Last month, we opened our newest community park,

Sweet Hollow Park in Melville. For many years, area

residents, including those at The Knolls at Melville,

had asked the Town for a park in their neighborhood

that they could enjoy every day.

It took a lot of creative thinking and cooperation

from the Hindu group, the BAPS, to secure the land

for the park, and considerable input from 70 commu-

nity members to help design the facility, and I am

very pleased with the result. This is a true intergener-

ational park, with features that should appeal to all

ages.

Of particular interest to seniors should be the cov-

ered picnic area, outdoor game tables, a 0.4 mile

walking path and two pickleball courts, addressing

the demand for a sport that is increasingly popular

among seniors. The park also has an outdoor adult

exercise area, and a playground where you can bring

the grandchildren. Still in the planning stage is a

sculpture to be placed at the entrance.

The park is located at the intersection of Old Country

and Round Swamp Roads (the parking lot entrance is

on Old Country). If you’re in the neighborhood, I en-

courage you to drop by and take a look. I think you

will be as pleased as I am to see how it turned out,

and I hope the park will become a magnet for people

in the area looking for a pleasant way to spend some

recreational time.

I hope all of you will have an enjoyable summer,

whether you spend it at a park, at the beach, travel-

ing on vacation, or in your own backyard.

FROM THE SUPERVISOR’S DESK

Frank P. Petrone,

Supervisor

Hooray the summer is here!!! What a fabulous time

to be a senior in Huntington. I hope your schedule

will permit you to find some time to visit the Senior

Beach House in Centerport on its own Senior Beach.

The porch offers a beautiful venue for observing the

water while reading a book, enjoying the company of

another or a game of your choosing. Inside there are

multiple rooms for gathering and of course there is

also the cottage which is opened for various classes.

On Mondays there is mahjong and yoga at the Senior

Beach House and a host of additional art, yoga,

music, and creative classes throughout the week at

both the Beach House and Cottage. For a full listing

of activities check out the Beach House page in the

Senior Center Newsletter.

Personally, one of my favored qualities of the Beach

House is the tranquility of the setting. The setting

coupled with the quality interaction with a friend is a

wonderful recipe for a great day. So while balancing

the responsibilities of the day can be a challenge,

find some time for yourself to go down to the Senior

Beach House and enjoy “your summer home”. We

work hard every day to survive: whether it’s

managing doctor appointments, maintaining

employment, and/or personal care regimens, the

tasks can be long. But in addition to surviving, we

want to thrive and an important part of thriving

comes from pleasure. There are many sources of

pleasure. The beauty of the world around us and the

joy of good company are two sources of pleasure

that I have come to treasure and they both can be

found right here at the Beach House.

Enjoy the summer!

Fondly, Jillian
