I was blown away by the story of the bold Randle P Mc Murphy, the frightening Nurse Ratched, the bashful Billy Bibbit, the gigantic Chief Bromden and the slew of well developed charac- ters set together in the amazing story of a Pacific Northwest Mental Institution. Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the main character, Randle Patrick McMurphy, had the raw energy of a methodical and smooth engine, sputtering, revving and ready to take off at any second coupled with the or- ganic charm of a playboy on steroids. It’s no accident the characters’ initials are RPM. I don’t remember who I saw the movie with or where I saw it, but I remember those characters’ lighting up the screen with their disorders, Nurse Ratched’s power to disembowel each patient with a smile and the amazing performances of each actor on the screen as the story unfolded before me. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest remained in the back of my mind, hovering there and calling out to me over my many years of directing. The opportunity to direct the play finally came in the form of compassion, and seemed a likely candidate for the River’s Edge Arts Alliance’s Season of Compassion, under the subject of Health and Wellness. The cast of Cuckoo’s Nest is a great one, and I am truly blessed to be working with such a fine group of dedicated actors. In our rehearsal process, we have been “peeling back the onion” of the charac- ters one by one, and delving into their past, much like one would during a therapy session. We are trying to understand the breadth and depth of each individual character on the stage, the relation- ships with each other, and also getting to know each other as people on a deeper level. These are wonderful ingredients for great theater. We are exploring what these characters mean to one another, how Mc Murphy’s ’presence on the ward effects each and every character, and how Mc Murphy and Nurse Ratched dance with each other in a passive aggressive pas de deux. The script is a great piece of theater and each role is a dream role for any actor. Our cast is comprised of a large group of intelligent, powerful, funny, caring and very talented individuals. My only hope is that their hard work on this project draws the audience they deserve. If you don’t see anything else this year in the way of theater, please come and see these actors in their portrayal of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. You’d be crazy not to. Inside this issue:

Call me crazy, but I’ve wanted to direct One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for many, many years. I was only a teenager when the movie came onto the screen. I was blown away by the story of the bold Randle P Mc Murphy, the frightening Nurse Ratched, the bashful Billy Bibbit, the gigantic Chief Bromden and the slew of well developed charac-ters set together in the amazing story of a Pacific Northwest Mental Institution. Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the main character, Randle Patrick McMurphy, had the raw energy of a methodical and smooth engine, sputtering, revving and ready to take off at any second coupled with the or-ganic charm of a playboy on steroids. It’s no accident the characters’ initials are RPM. I don’t remember who I saw the movie with or where I saw it, but I remember those characters’ lighting up the screen with their disorders, Nurse Ratched’s power to disembowel each patient with a smile and the amazing performances of each actor on the

screen as the story unfolded before me.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest remained in the back of my mind, hovering there and calling out to me over my many years of directing. The opportunity to direct the play finally came in the form of compassion, and seemed a likely candidate for the River’s Edge Arts Alliance’s Season of Compassion,

under the subject of Health and Wellness.

The cast of Cuckoo’s Nest is a great one, and I am truly blessed to be working with such a fine group of dedicated actors. In our rehearsal process, we have been “peeling back the onion” of the charac-ters one by one, and delving into their past, much like one would during a therapy session. We are trying to understand the breadth and depth of each individual character on the stage, the relation-ships with each other, and also getting to know each other as people on a deeper level. These are

wonderful ingredients for great theater.

We are exploring what these characters mean to one another, how Mc Murphy’s ’presence on the ward effects each and every character, and how Mc Murphy and Nurse Ratched dance with each

other in a passive aggressive pas de deux.

You’d be crazy not

to.

River’s Edge Community Band Concert

Make us part of your holiday tradition!

Saturday, March 7 at 7pm

Riverview

Hudson Portuguese Club

13 Port Street, Hudson

Not Irish? No worries! Everyone is invited to “A Taste of Ireland” on March 7th presented by the River’s Edge Arts

Alliance and the Hudson Rotary Club. This 2nd Annual event is going to be bigger and better than last year and you

don’t want to miss out on a night or Irish Food, Drink and Entertainment in celebration of St. Paddy’s Day. The night

will kick off with Irish Beer and Irish Food sampling as well as a performance by the Heavey Quinn Academy of Irish

Dance. Our Emcee for the evening will be Comedian Sean Sullivan who will entertain the crowd between acts. The

Jolly Beggars, a favorite from last year, will fill the air with lilting festive music. The Jolly Beggars bring the rich tradition

of Celtic folk music and storytelling to modern day audiences. Based out of Connecticut, their traditional songs and

musical arrangements have exposed many to the joys of Celtic music. The Jolly Beggars tell traditional stories from

Irish folklore and intersperse their musical arrangements with traditional reels and jigs.

Tickets for this fantastic event are on sale now and include Irish food sampling, Irish beer sampling and all entertain-

ment. Advance tickets for $25 can be purchased online at upwitharts.org. Tables of 10 can be reserved online or by

calling 978-562-1646. Reserve early for prime seating. For more information or questions visit upwitharts.org or email
