Mental Health Research Showcase 2007

The Showcase brings together stakeholders from across Canada with a significant interest in advancing mental health and mental health research in a major forum to explore research, leading practice and innovation. The event promotes applied mental health research, bridges the gaps among research, practice and policy, and encourages the use of research findings to continually improve services and outcomes for everyone.

There is clearly a demand for opportunities to share the latest knowledge and evidence‑based practices in the field of mental health. The 2006 Showcase was a sold‑out event with a full poster session. Evaluation results showed that participants were very pleased with the speakers, the program, the networking, and most of all, the collaborative approach to learning and information exchange among the many different participants.

Who Will AttendThe Showcase is designed to benefit a mixed audience. Researchers, designers and implementers of mental health services from across Canada will attend, including:• Service providers• Researchers and academics• Policy makers• Community agency representatives• Consumers• Administrators• Funding agency representatives• Members of the business community• Others with an interest in mental health service

delivery, research and/or policy.

Space is limited to the first 400 registrants. The Showcase sold out in 2005 and 2006 – register early!

The third Mental Health Research Showcase continues to highlight the importance of advancing mental health through research. The Showcase brings mental health experts from around the world to Banff in November. The goal is to shed new light on illnesses that continually impact so many individuals, families and communities – and bring the importance of advancing mental health to the forefront. The premise is simple. Excellence in research is the foundation on which progress is built. This conference is one of a kind, and is rapidly becoming a pre‑eminent Canadian health conference event.

Margaret Trudeau, Celebrated Canadian & Mental Health AdvocateMargaret Trudeau became the youngest Prime Minister’s wife in Canadian history, when she married Pierre Elliot Trudeau at the age of 22. For all her adult life, Margaret has suffered from the debilitating effects of her bipolar condition. Now, after seeking medical treatment that has given her life balance and happiness, she advocates strongly on mental health issues, helping people overcome the stigma of mental illness that often prevents sufferers from getting help. She is working with The Royal Ottawa Hospital to raise funds for their new hospital and raise public awareness of mental health issues. She has wonderful stories to tell and a strong, clear message on the importance of finding the balance of mind, body and spirit.

10:00 – 10:30 am MentalHealthServiceReformGavin Andrews, Scientia Professor, School of Psychiatry, University of South Wales, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, AustraliaMental health services have too few staff, too little money and too many clients. To overcome these problems, The Tolkein II Project in Australia developed an innovative model for an affordable but comprehensive service. The project planned the delivery of ideal care in a stepped fashion, one that adjusted the level of care to the client’s need. Surprisingly, it was affordable and we also found that a 30% increase in budget could treat 60% more people and produce a 90% increase in health gains.

Following the review of the literature for best practices, a number of such projects were developed working with the school boards and schools. The results showed that programs that target ADHD symptoms may protect children from early onset smoking as well. Additionally, the effect on the intervention on depression and the general feasibility of this program will be discussed.

These childhood experiences now hidden by time, shame and secrecy, exert a powerful and unrecognized effect on our most common public health problems.
