Frankston Park News
Dolphins season in reviewDespite losing stars Matthew Clark, Russell Gabriel and Mark Baguley, season 2012 started with plenty of promise.A string of recruits from VFL teams, the Stingrays, EFL and MPNFL brought the club far superior depth than the previous two seasons.Round 1 against Port Melbourne, who hadn’t lost a game in 18 months, seemed to confirm that optimism until a surge in the final 20 minutes saw the Dolphins fall. The post-game praise from Port players and officials, and the Dolphins development team’s dominant 37-point win after triumphing just once the past two years, had the club on the up.Things came crashing down the next week with an 84-point drubbing at the hands of Bendigo, but unlike previous seasons one hiding didn’t lead to another.Instead, the Dolphins hit the road and chased minor premier Casey to within a point and grand finalist Gee-long until midway through the final term. That good form led into the home clash with massive ri-vals Coburg, and after a poor first half Frankston kicked 8.7 to 4.2 after the break to record their first win of the season.Midfield recruits Kyle Martin and Leigh Kitchin and young stalwart Shane Hockey were the stars that day, capping off excellent starts to the year.Backmen Jarrod Irving, Leigh Osborne and Dylan Van Unen, and marking wingmen Corey Buchan and La-chlan Delahunty were also attracting AFL attention with their play.Unfortunately, the Dolphins couldn’t generate momen-tum from that victory, with wasted chances against Box Hill and Werribee being followed by a thrashing at Port Melbourne.Once again though, the young team used a rare poor performance as a spark, fighting out a thrilling loss to
traditional rivals Sandringham at Frankston Park. The development team recorded a spirited 12-point win over the Zebras to be just percentage off a place in the top six.
In the senior game, giant draft prospect Khan Haretuku produced a Carey-esque performance with 19 posses-sions, 12 marks and four goals, but the Dolphins fell six points short.
The game showed the quality of football the team could play, however, and even better was to come against preliminary finalists Williamstown.
With local duo Hockey and Mitch Bosward dominating the contested footy the Dolphins led 14 goals to seven with five minutes gone in the final term.
But Frankston’s run was done, and with the wind at their backs Williamstown kicked 6.5 unanswered to claim an unlikely draw.
That took the wind out of the Dolphins’ sails as they lost the next three games to non-finals opponents by an average of 34 points.
From there they didn’t seriously threaten any qual-ity opponents, but did save a very courageous perfor-mance for their old foes Coburg, slogging it out on a boggy Coburg City Oval to emerge with a memorable 18-point victory.
So the season finished with a 2-1-15 record, perhaps not justice for the improvements made percentage-wise, but a clear tale of the need to get the small things right.
Martin and Kitchin had superb years, averaging 24 and 23 possessions respectively. Hockey and Bosward seemed to get better as the year progressed, while full-forward Luke Clark ruined an excellent season by kick-ing a wayward 12.28.
Haretuku, Osborne, Van Unen, Buchan, Irving and De-lahunty all had strong showings, and anywhere from two-to-five Dolphins should have their names called in one of the three AFL Drafts.
Pre-season 2013 starts in seven weeks, and with the talent now available to the club an improved win-loss atio will be expected by players, coaches and fans alike.
