2. Executive Summary

A system integration test was carried out in Advanced E-line Solutions

facilities in Broussard, LA on March 2nd 2016.

Testing confirmed feasibility between Advance E-line Solutions FPT model:

FSN4000 (1 3/8”) and FSN6000 (1 5/8”) and Welltec 218 Well Tractor with

WMS logging (ES24075+ES24088) and perforating electronics (ES24096) and

the Freepoint sub: ES24141.

SIT also helped understand the Freepoint service to create a check list

document and identify possible failure modes from a Freepoint panel, going

through the wireline and the well tractor all the way to the free point sensor.

This last will help ensure service delivery to our clients.

3.3 Test Background

In an effort to improve our service quality when performing pipe recovery

conveyance, it was decided to approach Advance E-line Solutions. A few

setback jobs in past have proved the need of expanding our base knowledge

on freepoint sensor tools, this last as part of a plan deployed by operations to

reinforce our current standard procedures and even update, if needed, our DC

tractor technology (ES24141 Sub) for such service.

3.4 Test Objectives

To verify compatibility between Welltec 218 Well Tractor with WMS system

and the Advanced E-line Solutions Freepoint tools could be run using the WMS

system using the ES24141 sub, which was originally designed for

GE/Sondex/Applied Electronics Free point tool specificiations.

3.5 ES24141, Welltec Free point Tool sub

Without the Freepoint sub ES2414, we had the inability to initialize the well

tractor and change modes, as the Freepoint tool interferes with the WMS

communication voltage which still present at the bottom of the WT and it is

manifested as – DC voltage (-35~-65 Vdc).

During its active mode, the freepoint sub (ES24141) isolates any

communication between the Well Tractor and Free point sensor once it detects

this – DC Voltage. This isolation helps getting back our control over WMS

communication and allows the change between powerbus and feedthrough

mode in our Well Tractor.

Bear in mind that when its passive mode (no – DC voltage), the ES24141’s

relay flips back to feedthrough mode, which aligns either to the Diode mode

or the resistance configuration, which at the same time has 3 resistance

settings: 50 ohms, 25 ohm, 12.5 ohms.

The resistance configuration helps creating enough voltage drop across the

resistor to power the negative voltage detector and disconnect the

feedthrough relay. A small resistance arrangement (12.5 ohm) would be

beneficial for the Freepoint tool as the equivalent total resistance is less

(wireline resistance + Free point sub resistance = equivalent resistance) but

also will affect the wms communications, with a higher risk of the dc –

voltage detector not kicking in. A larger resistance arrangement (50 ohm)

would be the contrary for the setting voltage of the freepoint tool, but

beneficial to our wms communication, but it can also be compensated by

increasing the WSC voltage in FE cockpit advance setting windows.

Therefore it is highly recommended for Field Operations to confirm the

ability to remove the jumper in J8 location in case we need to*.

Free point sub: J8 and J10 Selection Bridges

*In some cases the jumpers were varnished with board, making this impossible to

remove them in location. This will need to be heated before attempting to remove

anything. Preferably, IMC Houston is capable of making such change if needed.

3.6 Tools and equipment:

3.6.1 Advanced E-line Solutions:

Downhole Tools:

• Free point sensor: Coil with a clutch assembly with a fixed distance

which is affected by torque and stretch of pipe. This variations of the

distance between this two, affects the current detected at surface.

o FPT 1” OD / FSN3000 Series & FPT 1 3/8” OD / FSN4000

Series:

 Operating Voltage: 10~9 Vac / 360~355 Hz

Reset / Setting Voltage: +180 Vdc

Feedthrough resistance: 21~20 Ohms (Coil Resistance)

o FPT 1 5/8” OD / FSN6000 Series:

 Operating Voltage: 5~6 Vac / 60~59 Hz

Reset / Setting Voltage: +180 Vdc

Feedthough resistance: 15~ ohms (coil resistance)

• Bow Springs / Magnets: For anchoring purposes within the string

pipe, and prevent the FPS to move, once positioned and ready to

collect info.

• Slack Joints: Manufactured with telescoping cylinders electrically

connected with a spring wire coil. When collapsed, the weight of the

string pushes the tool down when the line is lowered. When the line is

reeled in the slack joint opens and the weight of the tool string above

the slack joint is removed from the anchors. This way, the tool

anchors itself to the pipe without the weight of the tool string to sense

the stretch in the pipe.

• Sinker Bars: Feed through line subs to add weight to the tool string.

• CCLs: passive Casing collar locator to tool positioning.

• Bottom Plug: Connected at the bottom of Bow springs to close the

circuit, shorting the end of the coil with ground.

Surface equipment:

• Freepoint Panel: combines two panels in one, as it provides the

operating and setting voltages to the freepoint indicator tool, and

span/zero controls. This is also fitted with a ccl circuit which operates

on a separate meter and has an audible ccl signal.

o FP / CCL mode switch: switches the panel from FPT mode to

CCL mode. While RIH, CCL mode is on to, once positioned in

the pipe, FP mode is selected.

o 1 3/8” & 1 5/8” mode switch: switches from 10 Vac (355

hz) to 6 Vac(60 Hz), which are the operating voltages for 1

3/8”(also compatible w/ 11/16” and 1” OD sensor) and 1 5/8”

sensors respectively.

o Test and run mode switch: Only to be used when testing the

1 5/8” Free point sensor only with no wireline cable in between.

When in test mode, It adds an extra 100 ohm resistance to the

circuity needed to run and operate this FPT in surface.

o Set Switch: Push on switch when activated sends 180 Vdc

through the wireline to reset the Freepoint sensor, in another

words brings the meter needle back to 0.

3.7 Setup and Configuration:

We used a coax single pin slip ring cable to connect to the freepoint panel w/

no wireline cable available at location. This worked as interface between the

Freepoint tool through the Well Tractor and our test cable which was also

connected. The configuration of the slip ring cable is as follows:

• Harding plug Pin 1: Hot

• Harding plug Pin 2: Ground

A GO top connector was used on the tractor. The Freepoint sub ES24141 was

directly connected to compensator with the m9rp adapter in. A GO bottom

connector was then placed below the freepoint sub (see below), leaving a GO

Pin looking down to connect the Freepoint tool assembly. (Sinker Bar + CCL +

Slack joint + Upper Magnet/Bow spring anchor + Freepoint Sensor + Lower

magnet/bow spring anchor + bottom plug). In order to simplify tool string for

the testing, a CCL and FP sensor sub + bottom plug was connected to the

bottom of the Well Tractor, as the rest of accessories are just feedthrough

lines. Additionally, when running the ES24075/ES24088 you need connector

PN: CS24028.

4. Conclusions and lessons learned.

• Testing indicated that WMS electronics ES24075+ES24088/89 and

ES24097/98 are compatible with both Advance E-line Solution freepoint

tool configurations (1 5/8” and 1 3/8”).

• The 1 5/8” OD Freepoint tool / FSN6000 series settings and power

requirements differs from the regular freepoint tool model: which includes:

 1 3/8” OD/FSN4000 Series

 1” OD /FSN3000 Series

 11/16” OD/FSN1000 Series

• 1 5/8” OD freepoint tool is more sensitive to the total equivalent resistance

in the system (from FP panel all the way to FPS tool). The total equivalent

resistance is affected by:

Wireline resistance, depending on type of cable.

Freepoint sub resistance configuration, depending on the

resistance configuration in the electronics (50,25,12.5

ohm)

• Without the Freepoint sub ES24141, we had the inability to initialize the

well tractor and change modes, the Advance Freepoint tool interferes with

the WMS communication voltage (similar to GE Freepoint tool), which still

present at the bottom of the Well Tractor and it is manifested as – DC

voltage (-35~-65 Vdc).

• A 50 ohm resistance configuration in the Welltec freepoint sub ES24141

allows a higher voltage drop which is needed for a successful detection of

the negative voltage given by WMS electronics. Once the negative voltage

is detected the feedthrough relays opens, isolating the Freepoint tool from

our WMS communication. The lower the resistance less likely we will

communicate with our WMS communication.

• When sending the setting / resetting voltage from the freepoint panel, the

50 ohms resistance in the Freepoint sub ES24141 will also increase the

voltage drop across the total equivalent resistance, which again is made up

by the wireline resistance and the freepoint sub resistance.

[March/2016]

• Being able to change the Freepoint sub resistance configuration in the field

is imperative in order to find a sweet spot which allows a successfully WMS

handshake and proper FPT sensor tool reset.

• If unable to find the sweet spot, then it is recommended to carefully

increase the WSC voltage in the advance settings inside FEcockpit with and

still adjust the resistance to a working level.

• Avoid keeping the reset switch pressed for more than 1 second. This could

damage the ES24141 Freepoint sub and cause a communication failure

with the Well Tractor downhole. This should be discussed during the

Quality risk assessment talk among the Freepoint tool specialist and

Welltec Field Engineer.

• Advance E-line Solution Freepoint Panel uses 180 Vdc as a setting voltage

for both 1 5/8” and 1 3/8” OD tool, which differs from the GE/Sondex

Panel which sends 180 Vdc for 1 5/8” and 100 Vdc for 1 3/8” OD tool.

• Among the operational fleet, some freepoint sub boards were varnished

with the jumper bridges on. This may cause a problem when trying the

change the jumper configuration in location. They must be sent to IMC for

correction, IR will follow for HQ to address this issue.

• Freepoint service check list will be created in order to ensure proper

working before running in hole. Checklist will verify:

 ES24141 Freepoint integrity:

• Negative voltage isolation

• Feedthrough resistance reading

 Freepoint sensor coil resistance value.

Freepoint feedthrough line accessory isolation and

feedthrough criteria.

Well tractor mode change verification w/ freepoint

sensor connected.

Freepoint Panel output power values through wireline

and freepoint sub.
