Deeper Look Into Grade Book
Concept Mapping
• I am an Avid Concept Mapper• I routinely create multiple concept maps for
every workshop I do. • I do not always Share all of my Concept Maps • My Concept Maps are fluid as I use them to
grow my own understanding. • My Concept Maps are Mine and may not
coincide with your thoughts or beliefs.
Who is it for?
What does it Measure?
What additional information can it hold?
Quick Tour of Grade Book
Setting the right Year
Selecting a Class
Grouping Students
Why Group Students?
• Group them based on – Reading level– Work Group– Lesson Group (Band and Chorus) – Other Criteria
• Visible only to Teacher
• Not at all Required !!!
Categories Very Important
Well Defined Categories
• Allow you to Find Grades (missing) Quickly• Allow you to manage large number of Grades• Allow you average categories to get a focused
view of student achievement. – What are the Test Averages– What are the Quiz Averages – What are the Homework Averages
Categories can be
• Tool for Weighting of grades• Predictor of final success – Do your test averages mirror your Regents Scores?
– Do your exam scores mirror your ELA or Math Scores?
Main Tabs
Score Sheet Tab
• Where assignments and Grades Show up.
• Student Names
• Final grade for Reporting Term (based on Pull Down)
Grade Setup Tab
Setting Up Term Weighting
Math Lesson
• Term Weighting• Q1 = 75• Q2 = 80 • Q3 = 90• Q4 = 95
• Final Grade = 85
• Total Points• Q1 = 225/300 = 75%• Q2 = 80/100 = 80%• Q3 = 54/60 = 90%• Q4 = 47.5/50 = 95%
• Final Grade 406.5/510• 79.7 Rounds to 80
85 or 80
• No right or Wrong Answer – If you can show why the grade worked out the
way it did, you are fine.
– You are the final decision maker about your grade book preferences.
– Except for …
What to do About Zeros?
• Zeros
• Blanks
• Missing Work ???
• Pull Down the Average
• May Artificially Raise the average
• Cautions about Incompletes !!!
Break in the ActionFor Philosophical Discussion
• Short Video / Webinar
• 15 Fixes for Broken Grades (We are going to deal with the first Six at this break)
• Chance to Concept Map individually and in Groups
Start Video
• Webinar
• From “Pearson” about Power School
• But don’t be too judgmental
Key Idea
• Grades need to be –Consistent–Accurate–Meaningful– Supportive of Learning
Six Fixes
• Don’t include student behaviors include only achievement.
• Don’t reduce marks on “work” submitted late, provide support for the learner.
• Don’t give extra credit, or use bonus points; seek only evidence that more work has resulted in a high level of achievement.
• Don’t punish cheating with reduced grades; apply other consequences and reassess.
• Don’t consider attendance in grade determination.
• Don’t include group scores in grades; use only individual achievement evidence.
What is O’Conner Trying to Address
• Concept Mapping time • Focus Question:
• Who and What are grades for?
• Take some time to discuss with your neighbors. Draw some Maps !!!
What additional information can it hold?
Category Details
• Name / Color• Possible Points – Sets the default value for
new assignments of this type.
• Publish Info…
• Description, for Who?
What Information do we include?
• Are the grades in this category about Behavior or Achievement.
• Do these Scores Count in Final Grade?
• Some Behavior Categories: – All Assignments in – Turned in Safety Letters …
Assignment Detail
Descriptions
• Use the Box to explain what the assignment is about: – Why did you assign it? – What are you looking for from the student? – Where can they go for help?
• Use the Link Detail – To Connect to online resources
You really only need the URL & Link Text Box
Link Box create an HTML tag
• The Link Button is used to create web based HTML tag. In the box you See a weird bit of code.
• The parent sees a normal Blue Link to get help.
You do not need a Web Page
• Drop Box is the simplest tool for posting documents.
Your Drop Box in CloudThe days Work Sheet A Link to Document
You Paste Link
Drop Box Link
• URL– https://
www.dropbox.com/s/av77rb5q3t9d703/MinimumWage.rtf?dl=0
• Link Text– Minimum Wage Home Work Sheet
The User sees the Bottom Link, not the top.
A (MS)Word about File Format
• Create the Document in Word– Save it as a .docx so you can edit it later if you
need to.
– Save it a second time as .pdf so it can be easily picked up by the students and parents.
– Use the Link to PDF version.
A word about FILE FOLDERS
• Proper Folder design ,makes finding file easier.
• Example:
• Unit 1 Folder – Homework Folder– Assessment Folder – Classwork Folder
Physics
• Unit 1 Kinematics (folder)– Worksheets (Sub Folder)• Kinematics Equations.docx (file)• Kinematics Equations.pdf (file)• Four Step Method.docx (file)• Four Step Method.pdf (file)
– Classwork (Sub Folder)• Problem Set 1.docx (file)• Problem Set 1.pdf (file)
