Page 22: Advanced Searching OSCAR

YES!!!!YES!!!!

Page 23: Advanced Searching OSCAR

In these library databases little things like word endings can make a HUGE difference in search results.

Page 24: Advanced Searching OSCAR

But, you’ll be happy to know that there is a very easy way to handle things like that.

Page 25: Advanced Searching OSCAR

It’s a little device called TRUNCATION.

Page 26: Advanced Searching OSCAR

At the point where the spelling changes . . .after the Y in this case . . . you put an asterisk, *.

Page 27: Advanced Searching OSCAR

portray*will get you portray, portrays,

portrayed, portrayal, portraying, and so forth!

Page 28: Advanced Searching OSCAR

In fact, we should also use the asterisk/truncation with

film:

film*

Page 29: Advanced Searching OSCAR

So, we have 3 ideas to put in those 4 boxes.

Page 30: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Think of each box as being a place to put an IDEA in your research

topic.

Page 31: Advanced Searching OSCAR

The ideas/boxes are connected by the Boolean operator And.

And, finally, put portray* in the third.

Page 36: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Let’s scroll down and scan a few titles . . .

Page 40: Advanced Searching OSCAR
Page 41: Advanced Searching OSCAR

The word women is in two titles . . .

Page 42: Advanced Searching OSCAR

But I don’t see film* or portray* anywhere

Page 43: Advanced Searching OSCAR

We will need to look at FULL RECORDS to see where those words appear.

Page 44: Advanced Searching OSCAR

So, let’s choose a title and click on it.

Page 45: Advanced Searching OSCAR

How about the 2nd one? It mentions cinema. How about the 2nd one? It mentions cinema.

Page 49: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Where, though, do our three search words appear?

Page 50: Advanced Searching OSCAR

One, women, is in the Subject field.

Page 51: Advanced Searching OSCAR

One, women, is in the Subject field.

Page 52: Advanced Searching OSCAR

And, also 3 times in the Contents.

Page 53: Advanced Searching OSCAR

And, film is all over the Contents.

Page 54: Advanced Searching OSCAR

One form of the word portray* is in the Contents as well.

Page 55: Advanced Searching OSCAR

What is that field Contents anyway?

Page 56: Advanced Searching OSCAR

It is the Titles of the Chapters in the book.

Page 57: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Of those 6 books we found, some will only have chapters that are relevant.

Page 58: Advanced Searching OSCAR

The field to look at more closely, though, is Subject(s).

Page 59: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Only one of the 3 words we searched appears here as a Subject.

Page 60: Advanced Searching OSCAR

That is women.

Page 61: Advanced Searching OSCAR

But, another one of our IDEAS appears here. Do you see it?

Page 62: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Isn’t motion pictures another way to say film*?

Page 63: Advanced Searching OSCAR

Think of the words here in Subject(s) as your POWER words!

Page 64: Advanced Searching OSCAR

It’s like learning another language!

It is, in fact, a special vocabulary from the Library of

Congress.

Although the word films maybe be used in the REAL WORLD more often than the phrase motion pictures…

when you are using library databases, it

is the Library of Congress that rules!

Page 66: Advanced Searching OSCAR

So, now we know that the Library of Congress likes women and motion pictures, what about that 3rd idea? Portray*?

Page 67: Advanced Searching OSCAR

You aren’t always going to find words among the Subjects for all your ideas. Searching isn’t

always going to work like with women and motion pictures. So, you are going to have to look a little longer for ideas like portray*. For

some ideas, you will have to rely a lot on words you find in Titles and Contents fields.

This is one of those cases!

Page 68: Advanced Searching OSCAR

So, we need to look at a few more FULL RECORDS . . . Scroll up to the top of the
