Excellence in P hysical Medicineand RehabilitationCarolinas Rehabilitation is one of the largest and most

comprehensive facilities of its kind in the Southeast, provid-

ing advanced customized care that enhances each patient’s

recovery. Carolinas Rehabilitation strives to achieve a three-

fold mission: to care for people with disabilities, offer

specialized training for physicians and other healthcare

providers, and conduct original research to minimize the

impact of disabling illnesses and trauma.

At the forefront of Carolinas Rehabilitation’s efforts is its

Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, comprised

of board certified physiatrists, medical doctors trained to

manage a variety of conditions including brain injury, stroke,

spinal cord injury, and amputation. This specialization

requires four years of training after medical school. Because

Carolinas Rehabilitation operates a residency training pro-

gram fully accredited for five years – a distinction shared by

less than 20% of training programs nationwide – the facility

attracts talented young physicians from around the country.

Fortunately, many of these physicians remain in the area to

provide needed services to the people of the Carolinas.

With the most comprehensive collection of sub-specialists in

the Southeast, Carolinas Rehabilitation serves as the regional

referral center for patients with catastrophic injuries. Several

staff physicians specialize in catastrophic care. Others are

devoted to pediatric rehabilitation, spinal cord injury and

brain injury.

Carolinas Rehabilitation also is one of only 16 centers in the

United States designated as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model

The Role of Charitable SupportThe Rehabilitation Research & Education Fund was established

to sustain and enhance Carolinas Rehabilitation’s tradition of

excellence in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This Fund

is dedicated to expanding resident education programs,

advancing notable faculty research and educational endeavors,

and supporting treatment innovations championed by Carolinas

Rehabilitation physiatrists.

GenerosityBy giving to the Rehabilitation Research & Education Fund,

you play a key role in expanding treatment options for

physically challenged patients throughout the Carolinas and

beyond. Whether you are a grateful patient, family member,

or simply a proponent of cutting edge rehabilitative medicine,

you can make a difference by helping sustain the locally-based

research and education programs that raise care to the highest

level at Carolinas Rehabilitation.

The Fund receives contributions through its charitable

foundation, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation. These gifts

may range from personal checks to gifts of securities and

charitable bequests. All are deductible for either income or

estate tax purposes, as allowed by IRS guidelines. Please refer

to the Guide to Giving (at right) for more information on

methods of contributing to the Rehabilitation Research &

Education Fund. Special gift plans may enable you to con-

tribute while retaining residual benefits for you and your heirs.

Guide to GivingCASH GIFTS

Donors often choose immediate gifts by check as the

simplest, most direct means of supporting the Rehabilitation

Research & Education Fund. These gifts, which may range

widely in amount, are often directed to specific areas of

the donor’s choice within Carolinas Rehabilitation.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES/REAL ESTATE

When considering a substantial gift to the Fund, you may

wish to review your securities and real estate holdings. If you

hold real estate or securities that have appreciated significantly

since their purchase, selling your holdings may trigger substantial

capital gains taxes. Donating these same securities or properties to

the Fund may enable you to take a tax deduction for their full

market value and also avoid capital gains taxes associated with

the sale.

PLANNED GIFTS THROUGH WILLS & TRUSTS

Another simple, effective option for philanthropic gifts is to

make them through a will or a charitable trust. Encouraged

by tax laws, bequests and trusts work particularly well

for those who would like to support the Rehabilitation

Research & Education Fund, but who do not wish to make

an immediate gift.

Carolinas HealthCare Foundation staff is pleased to consult

with you regarding gifts of securities and property or gifts

through wills and trusts.

express interest in giving donations in honor of a physician, nurse,

or other caregiver. In these cases, the names of the honorees

should be included with the gift.

The Rehabilitation Research & Education Fund also welcomes

commemorative and memorial contributions in honor or memory

of a family member or friend.

Gifts from grateful patients, commemorative/memorial contributions,

and other forms of support are all promptly acknowledged by

Foundation representatives, with notification sent to appropriate

individuals as designated by the donor. Amounts of contributions
