City development planning all around the world

faces major challenges to be able to provide quality

of life for a continously increasing number of inhabi-

tants— according to a UN study on the world’s popu-

lation, by 2050 about 60-70% of all the people will

live in urban agglomerations.

In this context, solutions based on renewable ener-

gies and energy efficiency, sustainable construction

and rehabilitation, alternative mobility, as well as an

optimized management of water and waste re-

present the keystone for smart cities. Sustainable

urban technologies are one of the mainstays of the

economy and are also considered to be the engine

for long-term sustainable economic development

and well-being.

In Austria we believe it is essential to strive forward

and expand the use of urban technologies in order to

obtain climate-friendly energy supplies while main-

taining high living standards. Our participation at the

Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) reflects

Austria’s high potential for innovation in this sector.
