    ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER- AIDED INSTRUCTION

CAI refers to the use of the computer as a tool to facilitate and improve instruction. CAIprograms use tutorials, drill and practice, simulation, and problem solving approaches to present

topics, and they test the student's understanding.

    Typical CAI provides

    1. text or multimedia content

    2. multiple-choice questions

    3. problems

    4. immediate feedback

    5. notes on incorrect responses

    6. summarizes students' performance

    7. exercises for practice

    8. Worksheets and tests.

    Types of Computer Assisted Instruction

    1. Drill-and-practice Drill and practice provide opportunities or students to repeatedly

practice the skills that have previously been presented and that further practice is necessary

    for mastery.

    2. Tutorial Tutorial activity includes both the presentation of information and its extension

into different forms of work, including drill and practice, games and simulation.

    3. Games Game software often creates a contest to achieve the highest score and either beat

    others or beat the computer.

    4. Simulation Simulation software can provide an approximation of reality that does not requirethe expense of real life or its risks.

    5. Discovery Discovery approach provides a large database of information specific to a course

or content area and challenges the learner to analyze, compare, infer and evaluate based on

    their explorations of the data.

    6. Problem Solving This approach helps children develop specific problem solving skills and

    strategies.

    Advantages of CAI

    1. one-to-one interaction- They allow students to progress at their own pace and work individually or problem solve

    in a group.

    2. great motivator

    3. freedom to experiment with different options- Also, computer-assisted instruction moves at the students pace and usually does not

move ahead until they have mastered the skill.

    4. instantaneous response/immediate feedback to the answers elicited-Computers provide immediate feedback, letting students know whether their answer iscorrect. If the answer is not correct, the program shows students how to correctly

    answer the question.

    5. Self pacing - allow students to proceed at their own pace- They allow students to progress at their own pace and work individually or problem solve

    in a group.

    6. Helps teacher can devote more time to individual students7. Privacy helps the shy and slow learner to learns- Computer-assisted instruction improves instruction for students with disabilities because

students receive immediate feedback and do not continue to practice the wrong skills.

    8. ndividual attention- Computers capture the students attention because the programs are interactive and

engage the students spirit of competitiveness to increase their scores.

    9. learn more and more rapidly- Computers offer a different type of activity and a change of pace from teacher-led or

    group instruction.

10.multimedia helps to understand difficult concepts through multi sensory approach- Computer programs are interactive and can illustrate a concept through attractive

    animation, sound, and demonstration.

11.self directed learning students can decide when, where, and what to learn- Programs provide differentiated lessons to challenge students who are at risk, average,

    or gifted.

EXAMPLE OF Computer Programs for Writing

    Word prediction

y Student-specific programs that identify words that student uses repeatedly; when thestudent types the first few letters, the program lists frequently used words that start

    with those letters

y speeds up the typing processSpeech-to-text

y student speaks into a microphone and the program types the wordsy program must be trained to the students word pronunciation and speech styley student must be taught how to use the programy increased speed from thought to text

    Text-to-speech

y student can hear what she has typed to check if it says what she wants it to sayy good for editing

    Spell-checker

y helps student identify misspelled wordsy automatically corrects words if the teacher set the program that way

    Thesaurus

y offers student other words that mean the same as the word he or she is usingy adds variety to students writing and increases student vocabulary

*Constance Mellon indicates that students are far less likely to benefit from CAI without the

aid of an instructor to guide them. Despite the computer's ability to tirelessly convey

information to address a variety of learning styles, most students need more than hardware tolearn, they must be willing, "You can lead a child to a computer, but you can't make them learn."
