Robotic-ATT Antalgic-Trak Technology Unique non-surgical three-dimensional spine therapy system Invented by Dr. David Bass Co-Developer: Dr. Scott Denny Non-surgical spinal decompression is a therapy used to reduce or eliminate acute or chronic neck and back pain as well as the treatment of spinal deformities. The theory behind spinal disc decompression is as follows: Pain occurs when the spinal segments begin to compress. As we compress, spinal disc and facet joint pressures increase. Subsequent movement creates irritation and grinding which increases inflammation. Pressures begin to be exerted against the spinal cord and nerve roots from the facet capsule and/or the disc. Over time, spinal movement while compressed begins to fatigue the annular cartilage of the disc resulting in bulging or herniation. Other conditions of chronic compression include degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, arthritis and spinal deformities like scoliosis. Non-surgical spinal decompression aims to elongate the spine and reduce these compressions thereby reducing internal disc pressure. The process creates improved intra-discal vacuum pressures that help retract the bulge/herniation to its natural state. The negative vacuum pressure helps draw in surrounding moisture, oxygen and nutrients to initiate a healing process and rehabilitate the area of treatment. The 1st generation traction systems utilized a steady linear pulling to decompress the spine. Some systems would simply pull and hold for the length of the session, others would pull and release. The newer types of non-surgical spinal decompression rely on alternating the pull and release cycling. They pull and hold for a designated time, then release for a designated time. This mechanism better hydrates the disc and allows for a consistent pumping of the spinal joint levels being treated. The pause between the pull and release eliminates the defensive spasm that older systems can create. Articulating spinal decompression and elongation are overall terms used to describe a type of non-surgical spinal decompression that uses special equipment guided by computers. This type goes beyond linear static traction. By creating the ability to use multi axial positional adjustment we can create directional force vectors that improve treatment targeting. The spine can now be moved forward, backwards, side to side and rotated which raises the standard of care regarding non-surgical spinal therapy. Robotic-ATT is following the anatomy and functions of the human spine and includes different types of spinal decompression, including traction, vertebral axial decompression and articulating spinal decompression, all including multi-axis Range-of-Motion (3D ROM) positioning. Postural change during the decompression is termed Kinetic Decompression Mobilization (KDM). The new system also enables treatment of many spinal deformities of the thoracic spine by alternating the use of our cervical and lumbar 3D ROM techniques. Now a therapist can treat the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine to significantly increase the range of clinical application. The new developed 3D-Range-of-Motion decompression is done while the patient is in a mild traction state. The therapist then puts the patient into a variety of postures throughout the decompression, focusing on areas where the spine is less flexible and the range of motion is limited. It is the goal to increase the pain-free range of motion of the spine. 3D Range-of-Motion combined with Kinetic Decompression Mobilization (KDM) is the cutting edge of non-surgical spinal decompression. During this process, the goal of “posturing” goes beyond simple flexibility, targeting areas of the spine that standard linear traction systems can’t effect.
