Christmas BlessingsHave you noticed the increase in the number of weddings and baptisms our parish has celebrated over this year. Praise our God!!

The arrival of CDC has brought youthful vigour to our parish and I’m very grateful the Lord answered our prayer for a solution to the empty convent issue. Thank you Cameron.

Romano, just a few more weeks before we say farewell. Your place in the parish and the house with your gentle strength and warm smile brings all of us reassurance that the future of the church is in good hands. Thank you for your support, friend. We all look forward to that day you will return and celebrate Mass for and with us.

With the increase in population in our humble town a corresponding increase in numbers at Sunday Mass has been evident which is great to see. It has also meant the workload for all has increased. I acknowledge therefore the great effort put into both pastoral and admin teams of our parish. Thank you Nancy for you organisational skills and your welcoming approach to all who come for a variety of reasons. We would be lost without you.

Welcome to our new Parish Pastoral Council with Helen at the helm. Whilst it’s a little sad to see Tim’s team retire we know that he has graciously passed the baton to a skilful set of new comers.

Liturgy and music groups deserve a mention too. Our Sunday celebrations at both 8 and 10 am Masses has been a joy to be part of.

I’m writing this from Brisbane. My sister Joan is coping bravely and prayerfully with her illness. She thanks you for your prayers as do I.

I look forward to working together for another year dedicated to our Good Lord.

God bless you allFr Robert

All good things must come to an endAs the year draws close to an end I am reminded of the song Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season) by The Byrds.

For the last 11 months I have definitely come to call St Patricks home and have come to learn and appreciate the country and its people whom I have considered family and friends. I have seen seasons pass and yes there was a time for everything. And now the time has come for me to say a BIG Vinaka Vakalevu to everyone who have made this year a memorable and enjoyable one. A big vinaka vakalevu to the challengers and words of encouragement that have helped me to look deeper into myself and allowing me to grow to be a better person.

The time has come to turn a new leaf and start a new chapter as I finish my pastoral year and I am looking forward to spending some time with family back in Fiji before coming back to start a new academic year in Holy Cross Seminary. I continue to seek and ask for your continuous prayer and support as I continue my discernment year.

From the ChairAs we enter into the season of Advent I would like to thank those who encouraged me to consider the position of Parish Pastoral Chairperson and to those who have welcomed me into the role and given their support. I am enjoying this opportunity and feel very blessed.

Even as our Parish grows and changes the spirit of generosity continues thrive. Some of these examples are evident within the liturgical, financial and pastoral groups. What has impressed is the width and breadth of goodwill that exists in whole our Parish community both seen and unseen.

Someone asked recently what does the Parish Pastoral Council do. So I would like to take this opportunity to provide some insight for those who may not be aware.

Every Parish in the Auckland Diocese has a Pastoral Council and while there is some flexibility as to how these can operate, in structure and approach, the primary responsibilities are the same. We are responsible for pastoral planning for our Parish and its overall vision.

Our Parish Council meets every month with Fr Robert where we share information from the committee’s or ministries, specifically within our Parish. Many of us have direct involvement with these committees but when we come together we are a representation of our whole parish. As such our discussions, planning and decision making is always for the service of all. In order for this approach to be effective there is often the need to take the time to consider and pray collectively and individually to ensure right decisions are made.

God has been good to us at St Patrick’s and we are fortunate to have a committed group who give their time freely for the benefit of all.

The season of Advent is a wonderful time of reflection of hope, peace, joy and love.

I wish you all a safe and happy ChristmasGod bless

HOPE PEACE JOY

1st Sunday of Advent

2nd Sunday of Advent

3rd Sunday of Advent

The season of Advent

Advent comes from the Latin word meaning “coming.” Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.

Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple colour associated with Advent is also the colour of penance. The faithful should fast during the first two weeks in particular and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The colour of the Third Sunday of Advent is rose. This colour symbolizes joy and represents the happiness we will experience when Jesus comes again. The Third Sunday is a day of anticipatory celebration. It is formerly called “Gaudete” Sunday; gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin.

Finally, Sundays during Advent, just as during Lent, should not be given to fasting, but instead to celebration because we celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord every Sunday. It is important to remember, however, there are no particular rules for how the laity should observe Advent.

Catholic Discipleship College

The Catholic Discipleship College has completed its first year in our new location beside St Patrick’s Parish. We would like to thank Fr Robert and all parishioners and members of the community who have contributed to the life of our students in 2018, especially those who have donated fresh meat and produce and delivered bread to CDC, the many people who have supported our students in their fundraising efforts, and those who have provided spiritual and pastoral support to the students. Some highlights of 2018 include:- the CDC Opening Mass on 17 February- helping to restart the parish youth group, - hosting two lecture series on the Book of Revelation and Introduction to Philosophy,- our October Quiz Night fundraiser,- and the CDC Graduation on 17 November.

Please pray for us over the summer as we seek to attract a new group of students for 2019, secure lecturers for the various scriptural and theological topics, and plan all the activities of the year so that the College can be even more fruitful in ‘Forming disciples fully alive in Christ Jesus.’

God bless you all,Cameron Surrey, Ph.DCDC Formation and Household Leader

Catholic Women’s League We have a dedicated membership of around 22 women and we have operated since 2015 under a system of rotating the role of President between 3 or 4 of the members but with the consistency of the same Secretary and Treasurer. At our recent AGM Colleen Earl took over the role of Secretary and Rosemary Balle the role of Treasurer from Maree Stevenson and Heather Reynolds who had faithfully held these positions for the last 3 years.

We are affiliated to the Auckland Diocese of Catholic Women’s League and each year attend a Diocesan gathering , as well as being part of the Southern Region with Otahuhu, Waiuku Thames and Hauraki Plains which has a Regional Day annually. This year Otahuhu branch were the hosts and they combined this with their 50th Jubilee.

We continue to be ever grateful to our parishioners for their amazing support of our fundraising activities which in turn has allowed us to support our mission initiatives.

Our fundraising ventures to support our main Mission in Vanuatu and smaller local Missions have been very successful. From the proceeds of our Mother’s Day Raffle we sent $1000 to Sister Avelina in Port Villa to carry out renovations to the hostel her sisters run for young girls teaching them life skills like sewing and cooking. This was after a cyclone in Vanuatu.

We have made donations to our local Hospice and the Tyburn Monastry as well as the annual Carmelite and At Home Appeals.

Though we no longer cater for funerals as a fundraiser we have been called on to cater two wedding afternoon teas and the Parish’s First Holy Communion celebration and we are happy to loan out our crockery, etc for a nominal hireage fee.

We take turns on a roster for the Parish Hospitality Sunday. Each year we try to attend the Salvation Army Spring Rally, take a turn manning the Hospice Christmas Tree, and join the Methodist Ladies for an evening of Christmas Fellowship.

Ten members took part in Franklin’s celebration of 125 years of Women’s suffrage on September 15th by joining a march down King Street followed by an international high tea in the Town Hall. Coverage of this was on TV One news which featured a shot of a few of our members and a glimpse of our CWL banner.

We will finish our fund raising for the year with a market stall after the 8.00am and 10.00am Masses.

We meet in the upper room of the Parish Hall on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm and welcome new members.

Fleur de Farias ( one of the rotating Presidents)

St Vincent de PaulFirstly, I wish to thank all those parishioners who donate groceries for the food bank, household items when requested and help with delivering them and liaising with the recipients. Your generosity and co-operation is much appreciated.

For those who are unaware SVdP members focus on: • Visiting (the people at home, rest homes, hospitals, prisons) not by cold calling but when people ask or are referred.• Providing essential household items (beds and bedding, chairs and tables, appliances, kitchen necessities, groceries) to immigrants, refugees and others who may need them.• Meeting regularly to pray and co-ordinate.

Associate members help with the above but are not committed to attending meetings regularly. As always good information about who needs help and what help they need is very important. Before Christmas Jean Kiely and others will be arranging some Christmas hampers for families who could use them.

Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and happy New Year.

St Joseph’s Catholic School newsTena Koutou Katoa, Talofa Lava, Kamusta, Malo e lelei, Mauri, Malo ni, Fakatalofa atu, Greetings to all.

Once again we have had a very successful year at St Joseph’s School. Mrs Lori Mravicich was appointed as our new Deputy Principal. Lori brings with her great enthusiasm and passion for the vision of the school as we move forward in our collaborative practice journey. Mrs Fleur de Farias continues as our Assistant Principal and SENCO. Both ladies support me in my principal role as part of the Senior Leadership team.

There have been a few changes of staff with Mrs Noreen Meikle, our Director of Religious Studies (DRS), and Mrs Adele Bell, our school secretary, retiring; Mrs Shelley Arnott, who held a shared Team Leader position in the Junior Team; Mrs Angela Hart, our school receptionist; moving out of the area; and Mrs Leigh Jackson returning to Australia. Leigh had been with us a short while but the other ladies had all been at St Joseph’s for over a decade and their contributions to our school community were greatly valued. In Term 3, Mrs Mairead Gallagher-Pile returned as our new DRS and Mrs Kerri Egelmeer returned in her Arahi-Intermediate Team Leader role.

With the move towards collaborative teaching practice, this year we renamed our teams, in consultation with our Māori whanau, to reflect our school values: Intermediate Team/Te Rōpu Arahi - Leadership, Senior Team/Te Rōpu Piripono - Loyalty, Middle Team/Te Rōpu Ako - Learning, Junior Team/Te Rōpu Aroha - Love.

We began with 14 classrooms, opening another in Term 3 for roll growth. Our teachers continue to inquire into collaborative practice to offer teaching/learning experiences that better suit shared learning spaces within teams. It was disappointing to hear our planned new building has been put off yet again, however, we are going ahead with plans for the development of Rooms 5, 6 and 16 into a flexible learning space which will be completed for the beginning of 2019. We thank our Parent Teacher Association and the St Joseph’s Development Trust who helped fund this project.

Being involved in the Teacher Led Innovation Fund enabled our teachers to have the opportunity to observe collaborative practices beyond our school and develop their own inquiries into best practice. As a member of our South Auckland Catholic Schools Community of Learning/Kahui Ako, St Joseph’s has benefited from having three teachers on our staff within school roles. These teachers have additional Professional Learning Development opportunities to help them coach their colleagues to develop best practice. The COL curriculum focus has been Writing and we have been fortunate to have been provided with PLD within our own school. The reinstatement of our school hall has been fraught with delays beyond our

control but we are expecting it to be handed back to us in December, 18 months after the original fire. We have been very grateful to St Patrick’s Parish for their support during this time. Being able to use the church and parish hall has been invaluable.

We continue to be grateful for the wonderful relationship we have with the St Patrick’s Parish community who support us in so many ways. Fr Robert is a member of our Board and visits school regularly, meeting with classes who are preparing the Friday’s Mass. Nancy Fox has been our go-between for hall bookings and so much more, and this year having Seminarian Romano in our school has been an added bonus. Romano has supported our Pasifika boys and accompanied school trips when available.

The school continues to promote ways to support our cultural richness. This year we have 10.5% Maori and 20.3% Pasifika, the largest group being Tongan. We were proud to see a number of our students perform so well in the Franklin Cultural Festival (kapa haka and siva), and at this year’s Franklin Pasifika Speech Competition. Our kapa haka group continues to grow, performing at our South Auckland Catholic Schools COL festival. Our haka was very powerful and watching it is emotional. Our school Pasifika Week recognised our children’s island nations each day accumulating in a celebration of Pasifika on the Friday. It was wonderful to see the pride of our students on that day. During Maori Language Week, a Mass with a Maori focus was a highlight with Mr Alan Surrey being presented a taonga by our Maori whanau in recognition of his contribution to our school’s powhiri.

The promotion of self efficacy in our students has enabled them to challenge themselves and become more self motivated as they select their next learning steps. They can recognise their own learning goals and set out to succeed in a supported environment as they select workshops across their team. The inclusion of Learning Through Play in Te Rōpu Aroha has supported oral language to promote improved writing and we are beginning to see improved results in this year’s 6 year netts.

We continue to promote the charism of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM), our founding order. Mission Day is an long-standing tradition in which we fundraise to support the Mission Sisters’ projects and this year we were pleased to raise $5440 on their behalf.

I wish to acknowledge our PTA who are committed to supporting the school in any way they can. This year we had an amazing school fair raising over $26,000. These funds are being used for our classroom building project. As well as this, the PTA has subsidised the costs of trips for every team in our school, covered teachers’ supervision duties to enable them to attend staff celebrations, organised a “Good from Scratch” food demonstration, and run the second-hand uniform shop here at school which has benefited everyone. We are so grateful for their commitment to our school.

Page 17: Advent Communicator 2018 - Pukekohe Parish · members and a glimpse of our CWL banner. We will finish our fund raising for the year with a market stall after the 8.00am and 10.00am

Our dedicated Board of Trustees meet each month. The Board consists of 4 proprietor’s representatives and 6 elected members, as well as, an elected staff representative and myself as principal. Next June there will be a new Board election that you might consider standing for.

“A school is only as good as the teachers that work there” and, with a shared vision for the future of our St Joseph’s School, our teachers and staff are united in providing the best learning opportunities we can in a nurturing Catholic environment. Regularly I see times when staff act as Christ to our children and their families. As our school community becomes more diverse, we are seeing more needs. Our teacher aides and support staff do an amazing job. Without teacher commitment the many things our children do beyond the classroom just don’t happen. We are so grateful to have these dedicated ladies working with us. Opportunities for social justice are promoted and supported by our staff as they endeavour to create a nurturing learning environment for those students in our care.

This year we have particularly emphasized kindness as a quality of a St Joseph’s child. We are very proud of all of our students. Our school values: “To love, to learn, to lead, to be loyal for life” are continually promoted and students acknowledged by staff for living these at school assemblies. We have wonderful children here at St Joseph’s School; all trying to do their best in their learning and as growing citizens. The service roles held by our Student Leaders and Te Arahi Rōpu are carried out with care and concern, and contribute to the wellbeing of everyone in our school community. Euphraise’s spirit of zeal is obvious.

This year, as in many others, our parishioners have financially supported our school camps covering and/or subsidizing the cost for several students for both the Year 5&6 Camp at Kaiaua and Year 7&8 Camp at Hunua. The school community is very thankful for your generous spirit. We continue to be grateful for belonging to such a supportive parish.

God bless you all in this Christmas season and always.

St Patrick’s Sacramental Program 2018My review of the Sacramental Programme - By Olivia Hadrup

One day my Mum asked me if I wanted to make my First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Holy Communion. I said “Yes”. So me and my sister started going to the Sacramental Programme. I really liked the programme very much. It taught me about God and made me spiritful. Learning from the Sacramental Programme was a big step up for me and I was really nervous at first but I got to know everyone and it was all fine. After a few weeks of going to the Sacramental Programme I learned to be like God and live as he wants. Then we kept having more sessions and kept getting lots of worksheets to lead our way to being a saint. When I was going to the Sacramental Programme I felt a boost of love rush through me. It felt like it was from God. It made me feel like a saint then.

Once we had done all the sessions on Reconciliation, we had our First Reconciliation night. I felt excited and I felt nervous. We talked to Fatherabout what we had done wrong and he absolved us from our sins and gave us penance. I felt relieved and happy afterwards.

Then we started having sessions about Confirmation and Holy Communion. One session we had a practice of what it would be like on the real day of First Holy Communion. We got to have a practice of having the bread and wine but it was not consecrated. It was fun practicing and I was so excited for my First Holy Communion.

Finally, it was my First Holy Communion day. I was thrilled with excitement. At home we dressed up in our pretty white dresses. I had some flowers in my hair and on a bracelet. We went to church and sat in our reserved seats. My sponsor was my Uncle Antony. We did the start of the 10am mass. We did what we usually do in the mass. I sang with my Uncle. My Uncle had a missal with him. It was a brown book with golden pages. After the Bishop gave his sermon, we all stood up in front of everyone and the Bishop and Fr Robert laid their hands on our head and prayed for the Holy Spirit to come to us. Then it was time for people to get anointed. Me and my Uncle went up and gave the Bishop my saint name. He said “Saint Catherine Laboure, be sealed with the Holy Spirit”. Then we waited for all the other children to go up. Finally, it was time to get Holy Communion. I went up and put my hands up and got the bread and wine. Then we came back and said prayers. Then the Mass ended. After the mass we went into the church hall to have lunch

and a party. All the people who made their First Communion got to have a photo with the Bishop. It was a very special day and I had a great time. The End.

ST. PATRICK’S LITURGY COMMITTEE REPORT Under the guidance of Father Robert, and chaired by Lizzie Farrell, St. Patrick’s Liturgy Committee meet monthly to prepare Liturgies for Sunday Masses and the many Holy Days of the Church’s Liturgical year.

The Easter celebrations this year were very well attended. Father Robert commented that ‘these Easter ceremonies were the best I have ever been associated with’. Poignant, seems to sum up our Easter ceremonies. At the meeting following Easter there was discussion on whether or not we should have Holy Communion on Good Friday. I want to share with you a comment Father Robert made to the committee: ‘on Good Friday there can be a feeling of anxiety from not receiving the Blessed Sacrament, hold onto that and pray with that, it is a very real Good Friday experience….the Lord has died, I am without him, embrace this feeling’

As a Parish we continue to nurture combined liturgies with other religions. This past year has seen us come together with Rev. Jan Wallace and members of the Anglican community to celebrate Christmas and Easter.

On Sunday 5th August Father Tony King-Archer celebrated his Thanksgiving Mass following his ordination into the Priesthood the previous day at the Cathedral in Auckland. Our Parish turned out in good numbers to support Tony during both occasions.

Our Christmas Liturgies, as always, were a festive reminder of our Saviours birth and saw families pack the Church and foyer for the children’s Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve. From babies to adults, all were totally engaged as the children acted out the Gospel reading in a pageant depicting the birth of Jesus. All Christmas Masses were well attended.

Lizzie Farrell, and her team provide a comprehensive liturgy program each Sunday for young children whose numbers continue to increase and hover around the 90 mark. Through these leaders our Children’s Liturgy is grow-ing and thriving. Lizzie and her team prepared children for their Confirma-tion and First Eucharist celebration with meaningful worship. Bishop Pat was very praising of the preparation and participation of the children and the reverence they showed throughout the Mass.

Lyn Wilcox produced the Prayers of the Faithful for our Masses and as a member of this committee keeps us updated with Diocesan Liturgical issues.

Prayers of the Faithful at both Masses on Pentecost Sunday recognised the varied cultures of our Parish. Our Community is so blest in its diversity of culture.

Shannon Hadrup has taken up the reins of leading the music groups with immense energy and talent which creates a cohesiveness of music & liturgy. We are very grateful to Shannon for the time and effort she puts into this ministry.

Jean Kiely is our Parish Sacristan preparing the Church for the different lit-urgies of our faith. She is the ‘turn to person’ particularly on Sundays and at week day Masses, furnishing enquiries that would otherwise hold Father Robert up from his already busy schedule.

During the past year we have been so fortunate to have Seminarian Romano Tikotikoca assisting Father Robert. Romano’s enthusiasm for his mission to serve God is evident in the many tasks he has undertaken throughout the year. The Youth Group is thriving under his guidance and his training of Altar Servers has seen numbers steadily increase. Confident Altar Servers are a vital ingredient to a successful Liturgy.

This committee could not do its job adequately if not for the many people involved in the different ministries associated with each Mass. From the men who take up the collection to the cleaners of the brass, from the altar servers to those who see to the laundering of the altar cloths, the music makers, the readers etc. etc. the list goes on, it takes over 50 people who contribute in many ministries, to bring together one single Sunday Mass. To everyone involved in the liturgies of our Church, on behalf of this committee, I thank you for your contribution and energies that give strength to St. Patrick’s Community no matter how small your involvement. Through your participation and the prayers of the congregation, the Liturgy Committee is able to support Father Robert as Parish Priest and in his role of nurturing the development of our Praise and Worship of our God.

We would warmly welcome new members onto the Liturgy Committee. If you would like to become a member have a chat to Father Robert or one of the members of our Committee.

God BlessCathy Yates (Secretary Liturgy Committee)
