Our 2009 Maze theme is "Visit PA... All in a Day!"

Open July 4 - Nov. 7 with 36 farm fun activities, special events – and Geocaching!Cherry Crest Adventure Farm’s new Amazing Maize Maze lets you ”Visit PA. . .All in a Day!”

Just when you thought it couldn’t get trickier Cherry Crest Adventure Farm took the seven regions that make up the state of Pennsylvania and turned them into its annual Amazing Maize Maze® – with the ultimate goal to ”Visit PA...All in a Day!” Billed as the world’s largest interactive game with music and a script, this year’s maze features 23⁄4 miles of intertwining paths that take you Upstate, around the PA Wilds and Great Lakes, through the Alleghenies and her majestic Valleys, the great cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, plus our own Dutch Country Roads. Interactive displays provide fun travel tips, while 14 hidden puzzle pieces and 12 tricky clues fill in a map that shows the way out.

Cherry Crest is filled with a full roster of farm fun stuff to do, that brings out the adventure in kids of all ages, even adults!

For the first time, there’s a Geocaching Challenge that takes you all over the 300-acre working farm (except inside the maze). Cherry Crest provides the GPSs with coordinates plugged in for a high-tech treasure hunt that offers three levels of difficulty. Solve the riddles. Look for clues and find the caches hidden in inconspicuous places in special containers. Some have beads that reflect life on the farm to make a cool bracelet.

The farm’s Courtyard and Barnyard have their own attractions, like the giant jumping pillows, Farm-Ed Center with its live baby chicks hatchery and interactive displays, a Farm Animal Center with the Amazing Goat Mountain and Walk-thru Chicken Coop, Make-A-Friend Workshop where kids can make an Amish doll or barn and learn about Amish culture, a Singing Chicken Show starring nine animatronic birds who croon old-time tunes, Farm Pedal Track, a Rain Room to cool off, rides like the Cherry Crest Express and a Farm Tour Wagon Ride, Pumpkin Slinger, Tunnel Maze and Obstacle Course, a 3-acre labyrinth for people who want to experience a walk-thru maze in lieu of the 5-acre logic maze, plus an enclosed Lil’ Farmers Playland for small children.

New additions include an educational Corn Crib and Bee Barn, the Big Ball Corral with Giant Volley Ball, Tether Ball and two Four Square Games.

Then there’s the special events including two major food festivals – Sweet Corn on Aug. 29 and a Potato Festival Sept. 26 – that are filled with great food, live music, zany contests, games and prizes. There’s also a Kids Pedal Tractor Pull, Dairy and Conservation Weeks, Armed Forces Day and a Cruise-In for classic cars. An expanded Food Corral, where fresh-picked corn roasted on the cob tops the menu, offers Angus burgers, hot dogs, chicken and wraps along with hand-dipped ice cream, kettle corn, and Lancaster’s Best Fudge (30 flavors all made on premise).

“We work hard to be fun, educational and a genuine reflection of life on the farm,” explains General Manager Rudy Kilgore. “We are a place for all age groups. Little kids love the rides and jumping in the hay. Parents enjoy the quality time they spent with their teens as they solved the maze puzzle together. Seniors reconnect with childhood memories. Visitors get as involved as they want to, or simply sit in the shade and enjoy the scenery Lancaster County is famous for. We are literally surrounded by Amish farms.”

Just the facts!

HOPS ’N CLOCKSSip on Some Hops & Check Out the Clocks!

National Watch and Clock Museum presents Hops ’n Clocks, Friday, July 10, 6-9 pm. Come see a tallcase clock made almost exclusively of beer cans by Randall Cleaver.

Randall Cleaver’s work combines what has been discarded to create timekeeping arti-facts. Creating with found objects started as an inexpensive way to obtain materials, but soon, the objects themselves became a source of inspiration. So it is with the beer cans! Randall’s biography and examples of his creations can be viewed at http://www.inliquid.com/artist/cleaver_randall/cleaver.php.

Five area breweries including Appalachian Brewing, Lancaster Brewing, Market Cross Pub and Brewery, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Union Barrel Works will offer samples of their finest brews. And what’s beer without something to go with it?! Providing delicious food to complement the beer will be local caterers including A Taste of Style, Chef Tim Foods, John Wright Restaurant, McCleary’s Public House, and Prudhomme’s Lost Cajun Kitchen.

To add to the fun, The Beekeepers will keep things lively with acoustic rock music played throughout the evening. A limited number of tickets will be sold. Tickets are $25 and $15 for those not sampling beer. Ticket price includes a commemorative glass, Museum admission and interaction with artist Randall Cleaver and seeing his creations. To order tickets or for more information, visit www.nawcc.org or call 717-684-8261 x237.

Wonderful Good Marketat Stoudt’s Black Angus

Elizabeth Stoudt conceived the idea out of her passion that grew from the Tree of Life. It’s all about growing a family, preserving local tradition, promoting local business and taking care of the environment. Stoudt’s Tree of Life is a variation of a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign depicting a tree, lush with God’s bountiful fruit.

Stoudt’s Wonderful Good Market provides you with tempting food selections and related items hard to find in ordinary markets. The term Man can’t live by bread alone seems questionable as a baker slides freshly baked loves out of the

So wonderful, you better get here early. Stare close at the picture below. Fresh ingredients are so plentiful that they burst through the crust while being baked to perfection. Wow!

Stoudt’s earned its reputation by perfecting recipes for at least 15 varieties of dense, German-style bread such as beer batter, sourdough, multi-grain, sauerkraut, etc. On the lighter side, Elizabeth is now rising French Bread keeping up with customer demand.

It didn’t take long to decide which bread I wanted (0.007 seconds, I timed it) – the Beer Batter Bread! Who need vegetables?

Okay, I know...some people need vegetables. If that’s the case, you’re in the right place. Wonderful Good Market sells locally grown organic vegetables. Delicious and nutritious, like my Grandmother always said. You better get here early for those too!

Another brilliant idea is fermenting at Stoudt’s. Hold on to your bottle (and loaf). Ready? Its Cheese!

Ahhh, Wonderful Good Cheese. While traveling the world, Ed Stoudt’s family increases its cultural

awareness. Beer, Bread, Cheese. And they bring it to our door. The only place to go for true culture shock is Elizabeth Stoudt’s dream come true.

Open weekends:Fri, 10am-7pm. Sat, 8am-5pm. Sun, 8am-5pm.

Sickman’s MillFor Tubing, Camping, Family Outings & Good Old Fashion Family Fun

Visit Sickman's Mill, you’ll instantly realize what a rare find this property is in today’s world – An authentic, extremely well preserved, 18th century flour and grist roller mill. It stands four and a half stories high with thirty inch thick stone walls. The power to operate its wooden-geared machinery comes entirely from the water that runs below it.

Sickman's Mill, in its original pristine condition, is still operational. The interior walls are constructed with Chestnut wood, not your typical rough-cut planks, sanded smooth so flour could be easily removed. Local farmers brought raw oats and grain to be milled into flour, bagged then delivered to various markets for sale. Imagine how loud and dusty it was during full operation.

During the last decade Sickman’s Mill was known for its seasonal Halloween attraction “Sickman’s Haunted Mill” which closed several years ago. Now under new ownership, the mill is being restored back to its original state.

As they removed haunted interior wall coverings and spooky props the new owners realized how much more they have. Just like discovering treasure masked by years of debris, they literally found a museum in the rough. Having walls, ceilings, machinery, etc. covered all those years actually helped to preserve important details of this historical, Lancaster County gem.

I commend the new owners for understanding the esthetics of this valuable property and the fact they want to share their fortune with you by making it accessible for your enjoyment.

Sickman’s Mill, situated along the beautiful Pequea Creek, makes it the perfect spot for tubing, camping, fishing, family outings, and having good old fashion family fun.

What is tubing? Its floating down a flowing body of water while sitting on top of a large inner-tube.

Unlike being pulled by a boat, the experience is somber and relaxing. Many tubers show up in groups to share their fun with friends and family.

While tubing, you’re immersed in nature with mature tree lined cliffs and small natural beaches. Many tubers see great blue herons, deer, geese, ducks, dragonflies, butterflies, tadpoles, minnows and an occasional cow cooling off in the water.

Open weekends to the public, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Hours, 11am Friday through 4pm Sunday. Open some holidays, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day for your enjoyment. Price, $10 per person, $8 per person for groups of 15 or more. Monday through Thursday is reserved for groups by appointment only.

Water-front camping is also available. Sickman's Mill camper's will find a quiet, peaceful campground that is well-maintained with level sites, picnic tables and a bathhouse. Ice is available for an additional charge. Stream swimming is available to keep the children cool and entertained. Visitors may also go fishing for bass and trout along the banks of the creek. Price, $35 per night - firewood and complimentry Haunted Mill tour at 10pm included.

Have your next event or family gathering at Sickman’s Mill. The entire campground and open-air tent are available for corporate picnics, wedding receptions and large group camping. For more information about renting our facility contact us at [email protected].

20 Lucky Winners to receive a tour of Crayola’s Manufacturing Facility to be held Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Not since 1992 has Crayola allowed the public to tour its manufacturing plant where nearly 3 billion Crayola crayons are made each year. But that’s all about to change. Through Labor Day visitors to The Crayola FACTORY will have a chance to win one of 20 Golden Tickets good for a tour of Crayola’s manufacturing facility. Each winner and one guest will receive a tour, a Crayola goody bag, lunch and lots of colorful memories. Golden Tickets can be found in four-pack Crayola crayons located at the crayon dispensers on the second floor of The Crayola FACTORY.

From 1985 through 1992, more than 20,000 children and adults toured the Forks Township factory to see how Crayola crayons and markers were made. The tour was so popular that nearly 20,000 visitors were turned away each year due to a lack of accommodations. Furthermore, children under the age of 5, some of Crayola’s biggest fans, were unable to tour the plant due to safety concerns.

In 1996, Two Rivers Landing, which houses The Crayola FACTORY and National Canal Museum, opened its doors and has seen more than 4 million people young and young at heart. This hands-on discovery center specializes in creative and imaginative fun for kids of all ages. Visitors can see live demonstrations on how Crayola crayons and markers are made as well as participate in more than a dozen hands-on art activities. For more information E-mail [email protected].

The Sports Car in AmericaNew Summer Exhibition to Feature 28 Spectacular Cars. At the Antique Auto Museum in Hershey through October 11

Ask someone just what constitutes a “sports car” and you are bound to receive a wide variety of answers. Some will identify with performance oriented cars like Chevrolet’s Corvette or anything built by the likes of Lamborghini, Alfa-Romeo, Ferrari and a host of other companies that reside chiefly in Europe and offer seating for two. Some will include muscular cars like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in this group, arguing that their back seat is more of a luggage compartment than actual seating for additional passengers. Ask a car enthusiast, particularly one who is into racing and they will tell you that a true sports car is a purpose-built two-seater with a history of success in motor racing. The Antique Auto Museum in Hershey has its own take on the subject and is hosting a spectacular 28 car exhibition covering a sixty-year history of sports cars in America.

In the earliest days of the automobile, manufactures proved their reliability, durability and performance through competition. This took many forms, including dirt track races, timed events, hill climbs and long-dis-tance runs. Some of the first “competition” cars were actually production models driven by personal owners who doubled as amateur racers. Single-seat cars termed “Runabout” or “Raceabout” offered sports car-like per-formance and were often driven on America’s emerging highways by daredevil drivers, both male and female. The earliest American sports cars are represented in the exhi-bition by a 1920 Mercer Raceabout once owned by the actor, Buster Keaton.

As the automobile developed in the United States, race cars became a breed of their own and performance ve-hicles became status symbols. Power and size grew side by side. Wealthy owners who wanted powerful cars pur-

chased large cars with big, powerful engines. By the late 1920s, American manufacturers were placing V8, V12 and V16 engines into a wide variety of body styles – none of which were small, two-door, two-seat vehicles.

The sports car as we have come to know it, took shape in America after World War II. American servicemen stationed in England and throughout Europe came into contact with the small, nimble, sporting two-seaters long embraced by the European motorist. Many fell in love with the vehicles. These cars, particularly the MG (il-lustrated by the Museum’s excellent 1948 MG TC in Brit-ish Racing Green) were brought back to America by the returning soldiers. It wasn’t long before the cars were officially imported and dealership networks established across the nation. Other foreign manufacturers followed MG, such as Mercedes-Benz, Triumph, Jaguar, BMW and Austin-Healey. By the 1960s several Japanese companies had also entered the market.

Though arriving relatively late in the game, American manufacturers have had tremendous success with sports cars. The Chevrolet Corvette, which debuted in 1953, is

traditionally viewed as America’s only true sports car; it is certainly the nation’s most successful, with volume sales, racing success and a cult following that cannot be matched by its competitors. The Museum’s collec-tion boasts a beautiful 1954 Corvette, one of only about 5 finished in black paint that year. This car is supplemented in the Exhibition by a 1963 Split Window Coupe and a 1967 race-prepped model. While Corvette is the longest running American sports car, it shared its early limelight with a host of other American vehicles, including the two-seat Ford Thunderbird of 1955-1957 and other sporty of-ferings from companies such as Nash and Kaiser, both represented in the Exhibition.

In choosing the vehicles for this display, the Museum defined the “Sports Car in America” has being a purpose-built two-seater that was either manufactured in America or imported by the manufacturer for domestic sale. We used the Antique Automobile Club of America’s definition of an “antique” being 25 years old or older to limit the se-lection to pre-1984 models. That turned out to be a good thing because it allowed for the inclusion of very popular cars such as the Mazda RX7 and the Delran DMC-12, best known for its supporting role in the “Back to the Future” movie series.

All in all, “The Sports Car in America” offers vehicles to please a wide range of tastes. In addition everything al-ready mentioned, we will have a Ford GT40, the car that took the coveted Lemans racing title from Ferrari in the

mid-1960s, a P-1800 Volvo once owned by Roger Moore, of the Sainte and James Bond fame and a “big-block” Co-bra formerly owned by the legendary Carroll Shelby. The Sports Car in America opens on Friday, May 22nd and runs through Sunday, October 11th.

The Antique Auto Museum at Hershey, a member of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program, displays beautifully restored automobiles, buses and motorcycles in unique scenes and settings. This Museum is one of the nation’s newest and largest automotive museums. Visi-tors are transported through eight decades in time from New York to San Francisco, making each visit a visual adventure for all ages. Admission to the Museum is $10 for adults, $9 for Seniors and $7 for children 4-12 years of age. The Museum is located just off Route 39, one mile west of Hersheypark Drive in Hershey, Pennsylvania. A Little Taste of AsiaManheim Township Public Library…more than books

A Little Taste of Asia is an evening celebrating Asian music, food, and culture. It’s also a fun way to support the Manheim Township Public Library and a great night out. The event takes place Saturday, August 8, 6:00 – 9:30 pm at Legacy at the Lancaster Jewish Community Center in Manheim Township.

The event features 2 World music performanc-es. Headlining the event is Alash Ensemble, an international quartet of throat singers from Tuva (Siberia). Opening for Alash Ensemble is John Protopapas on sitar. The evening also offers a variety of Asian foods and drink. Featured res-taurants include: Blue Pacific Sushi & Grill, Rice and Noodles, Taj Mahal, and Tokyo Diner.

Alash Ensemble is gaining audiences around the globe with their unique sound. They’ve even per-formed a private concert for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Albert II of Monaco. In addition to their amazing throat singing skills, the band also plays centuries-old stringed and percussion instruments. Alash performances in the U.S. include Lincoln Center, SXSW Music Fest, Kennedy Center, Grass Roots Fest, New England Conservatory of Music, colleges, high schools, and stages across the country.

What is throat singing? Newsweek Magazine said: “Imagine a human bagpipe – a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally – by the same person, at the same time.”

In 2008, Alash Ensemble toured with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, and performed on their Gram-my-winning holiday CD. To find out more about the Alash Ensemble throat singers, visit www.alashensemble.com.

John Protopapas kicks off the evening’s music on sitar. John has been studying and performing classical Indian music for over 30 years. He’s a professor of World Music at York College, as well as a yoga instructor, and private music instruc-tor. To learn more about John, visit http://www.yogahomepa.com/music.html.

Tickets are $35 and include an Asian food buffet and 2 World music concerts. The event is held at Legacy at the Lancaster Jewish Community Center, 2120 Oregon Pike (across from the Li-brary). Proceeds benefit the Manheim Township Public Library (www.mtpl.info). For tickets stop by the Library at 2121 Oregon Pike, Lancaster or call Mary Jo at 717-569-2269
