Tips

Page 14: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Have situational templates, tweak heavily

EXAMPLE OUTREACH

From: [email protected] or [email protected] Subject: http://off-endingurl.com/here/ Body: Hi {name/leave blank}, http://off-endingurl.com/here/ Who would be the best person to contact regarding this url? I’m hoping to get the link to our domain ({insert linked to url here}) removed, would you be able to help? Looking forward to hearing from you, Oliver {client footer if appropriate}

It’ll save you trouble.

THINK.

How can I best approach this? Does the webmaster know these are potentially poisonous links? Would I do better to play dumb? You are offering these people nothing. Most will ignore your first contact. Chase up - it works (you linkbuilders know what I’m talking about).

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Good thing you aren’t a competitor.

POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #1

“YOU COULD BE A COMPETITOR”

“And now a days, we are getting many removal requests from the competitors itself. For example, if I am your competitor, I’ll e-mail all the webmasters who link to you asking to remove the back-links. That's why I wanted a proof (like an official e-mail id), to start the process. And not only that, now a days, people are faking the address. The e-mails sent by these bad competitors look like they are sent from the company. I will remove all those links, if I receive a reply to this e-mail (coz people cannot fake receiving e-mails) Thanks, {name}”

Page 17: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

They’ve got a point.

POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #2

“WHY THE HELL SHOULD I?”

Great example from @thogenhaven: “Dude, if you spammed my blog, why should I spend my time cleaning it up

for you? I think you should have thought about that before you spammed me. Link stays.”

Page 18: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Seems reasonable, but tread carefully.

POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #3

“SURE, $2 PER LINK”

Whether you pay or not, record their email to you. If you do decide to go down this path, be careful. Some magic words: “Great, I crawled your network and we only found

the links on those two pages, so it shouldn’t be too much work!”

“Directories are dead”

Some other SEO’s

Page 20: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Don’t you just love all those partner directories? Use templates, use plugins.

Their authentication systems often go down. Source “link id=xxxx”

Stuff you can’t* clean up

Page 22: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Things you buy from fiverr…

Page 23: Adventures in Link Cleanup

The Viagra SERP is pretty interesting.

Auto-splogs, Abandoned Splogs, Auto-directories*

Page 25: Adventures in Link Cleanup

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Places you want the link, regardless of metrics.

Removals that aren’t worth the PR hassle (client/affiliate relationships etc).
