FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

This year marks the 20th year of our establishment. A number of programmes to celebratethe same and to showcase the talent of our students and staff will be held. I am veryhappy that a modern Gym and a Student Activity Center has been inaugurated which has

been a long standing need of our student community. We are looking forward to the completionof the Indoor Stadium – which will be one of the largest of its kind in India.

I am very happy that more than 20 of our alumni visited our campus from different parts of thecountry to be with us on the occasion of the celebrations. Their successes have spurred ourstudent community and it is evident that they have gone beyond their engineering agenda. I lookforward to hearing the success stories of the 10000+ alumni in the days to come. I urge allalumni to register themselves on the alumni.nist.edu portal so that we are in touch.

I congratulate the team of Bhajanpreet Singh and Vinay Babu Vandrangi and their Mentor Dr. Ajit K Panda -Winners of the Cadence Design Contest 2016 in the B. Tech Category. NIST has clinched the Winners title for threetimes in a row, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Congratulations also to our team of students who participated in the M. Tech andB.Tec h Categories. Our performance is ASTOUNDING in the face of tough competition from IITs, NITs, and othertop Institutions. No wonder top core VLSI companies all over India make a beeline to hire NIST VLSI graduates.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESKCongratulations NISTians!

This edition commemorates the completion of the Glorious 20 Years of NIST. These years not only are witnessto the relentless efforts put in by the visionaries but also set an example for the younger brigade who are readyto roar and lead with the same legacy with much vigor and enthusiasm.

We have once again proved that we are the Best and the NIRF Rankings, the DQ and Outlook Magazines’ Survey, the Placements, the Smart Village Award, the recognition of the Quality Projects, the BPUT Gold Medalists, theAlumni talks and many more are the paeans to this glory.

It’s a matter of great elation that this time we not only had a fruitful Placement season for the batchgraduating in 2016 but also got the opportunity to Welcome the largest Batch of B Tech, MBA andMCA students. The grand Orientation Ceremony for the freshers was remarkable and a matter ofgreat Pride and Joy. The report on the 20 years celebration would really encourage all of us to workmore efficiently.

We wish all our esteemed readers a Happy Reading! We appreciate your valuable suggestions.

FROM THE PLACEMENT DIRECTOR’S DESK

Last month we witnessed the campus recruitment at NIST. As we see, there is a slowdownof hiring this year. Some important feedback given by the HR Managers during therecruitment process are as follows:

1. The online test is going to be more difficult in the future years and they are going to adopt theCAT pattern tests for recruitment.

2. Candidates having backlogs will not be given joining letters even though they are selectedthrough the campus recruitment.

3. In technical interviews, it is found that the students are weak in SQL, OOPs and C programming.Hence all the students are required to work hard and improve their programming skills in the above areas.

4. The companies have insisted that ORACLE Certification is compulsory for campus recruitments. Hence allstudents of 1st year and 2nd year are strongly advised to do their ORACLE Certifications during summer withoutfail.

The rise in competition is giving a tough time to students in campus recruitment this year. Companies are very choosyabout the colleges they are visiting and the students they are selecting. And certainly this is no time for ver largenumbers as we had witnessed last year during September 2015. Students are advised to excel in academics andprepare for competitive exams. All the final year students are advised to go for GATE exams and get a good score. This will be very much needed for Public Sector Units as well as core industries which we are expecting in the

February, March, and April 2017.

I wish all the very best for your preparations.

Best WishesGeetika Mudali

20 YEARS CELEBRATIONSNational Institute of Science and Technology, celebrated its completion of 20 glorious years with great pomp and show

on 17th and 18th September 2016. It was a great matter

of pride for all the members of NIST, its members of

faculty, staff and students. “Over the years, starting

from a humble sojourn in the campus of Berhampur

University in the year 1996 to the 60 acre picturesque

Palur Hills, the journey of NIST has been a roller

coaster ride. The feats it has achieved can be

compared to all top schools of the country and the

globe. But the journey continues for many such

laurels to be bestowed on the Institute”, said Prof.

Rajendra Prasad Das, Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur

University while addressing the students, alumni of

NIST, faculty and staff in the Inauguration Programme.

Prof. Geetika Mudali, Founder Promoter and

Placement Director of NIST was enwrapped in

nostalgia while sharing her experiences with the first

batch and the successive batches of students of NIST. She highlighted on all the commendable achievements of NIST

and congratulated the alumni, present students, and all stakeholders of NIST for carving such an enviable position for

NIST. She envisaged the Institute to grow in leaps and bounds in the times to come.

The Institute organised a plethora of events on the occasion of its 20 year celebration for the students, faculty members

ALUMNI TALKS

As a part of the 20 Years Celebration of NIST, Alumni from 1996 to 2016 were invited to deliver talks on various fields on

Technology, Corporate Governance, Prospects of Engineering and others to their juniors and to motivate them by

sharing their own experiences on and off the campus. To keep all alumni connected, the Institute launched an alumni

portal on the same occasion where all the members could share their views, exchange interactions, post their sugges-

tions and so on and so forth. The details of the talks were as follows:

and staff. On 17th September, programmes like Sports, Alumni Talks, Fun Events, Road Shows, Flash Mobs, and others

kept the campus busy in the day time. Alumni from 1996 – 2016 batches were invited to be a part of the celebrations.

They presented their talks on various fields on Technology, Corporate Governance, Prospects of Engineering and others

to their juniors and tried to motivate them by sharing their own experiences on and off the campus. To keep all alumni

connected, the Institute launched an alumni

portal where all the members can share their

views, exchange interactions, post their

suggestions and so on and so forth. The

Institute felicitated all its faculty members

and staff who completed their 10 years of

relentless service at NIST. A cake was cut

on the occasion followed by a High Tea party

for all faculty, staff, and alumni. The 10

yearers were given Cash Award, Gift and

Certificate of Appreciation. The evening offered musical treat to all NISTians. The musical nite by the very prominent

singers Rajdeep Chatterjee and Rupali Mallick was extraordinarily euphoric. To add to the joy were the performances by

faculty and staff children who kept the audience spellbound.

On 18th September, the Institute organised a mini-marathon, ‘Run for Humanity’ in Berhampur town covering a stretch of 5

kilometers. Around 200 students, faculty members, staff, and a few from different schools of Berhampur participated in the

marathon. Arjun Awardee, Commonwealth Games Champion and Ace Weightlifter, K Ravi Kumar of Berhampur, received the

runners at Govt. ITI, Berhampur as the Chief Guest of the programme. The Sports Icon of Odisha and the internationally

renowned weightlifter gave away the prizes to all the winners of the marathon. Dr Ajit Kumar Panda, Principal of NIST

felicitated Mr Ravi Kumar with a shawl and a memento in recognition of his contribution to the field of sports and being a role

model for many young sport enthusiasts of the state and the country.
