DATES TO REMEMBER

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Stars of the Week – 1K This week I was visited by some very talented students from 1K who shared a variety of work with me. This term, Miss Kimpton and her students have been reading the picture book ”The Gruffalo” as a part of their English unit. They’ve also been learning all about sounds with a particular focus on vowel digraphs – this week’s focus has been the sound ‘or’. Well done to the following students who were chosen to show-off their work this week - • Nate M, Amelia L and Matilda G: these students

have been working on their phonics with a

particular emphasis upon the ‘or’ sound. They all wrote a sentence stating where they were born. Nate and Matilda were born in Sydney and Amelia was born in Tonga. Other ‘or’ words that we brainstormed included – ‘horns’, ‘bored’ and ‘thorns’. Great work, guys!

• Elsie Mc and Maddie L loved the story “The Gruffalo”. After reading the story together with Miss Kimpton, Elsie and Maddie completed an amazing artwork and wrote their own story about the Gruffalo and the adventures they had as one of the main characters. Sounds like a lot of fun, girls!

• Jasper C-D also shared her story writing with me. She wants to be a pilot when she grows up because you get lots of money. Perhaps a career change is just around the corner?

Fantastic work, 1K!

Foyer Display Take a look at this fantastic artwork on display in the front foyer! 1K have certainly been busy preparing for their upcoming excursion to Oakvale Wildlife Park, drawing some of the farm animals they predict they will see whilst on their excursion. They also wrote a short explanation about ‘The Best Part of Me’. Congratulations to the following students who were chosen to share their masterpieces with me – Indie D, River C, Jasper C-D, Mia A, William A and Evie G.

School Open Day – a great success! Thank you to all of our new and existing families who participated in our very first ‘School Open Day’ last

week. The purpose of this event was to provide local families with school-aged children the opportunity to come into Ourimbah PS for a school tour and to participate in open classrooms and a Community Expo, where a variety of agencies were available to talk to about school readiness, family support and transition to school initiatives. A full list of those community agencies / organisations that supported our Open Day has been included as a flyer with this week’s newsletter. A huge thanks to our organising team for their dedication, hard work and outstanding professionalism, led by Mrs Lauren Kenny and Mrs Nada Potter. My thanks also to the staff and students who opened up their classrooms and kindly agreed to give you a sneak-peak at some of the wonderful curriculum programs and extracurricular activities that form part of our daily timetables (KSB – Mrs O’Connell and Mrs Brewin, 1N and 1K – Miss Nebauer and Miss Kimpton, 5/6M – Mrs McLean, 3B – Mr Bradbury and 3/4E – Mr Edwards). I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful work of our dance teachers, Miss Adams and Ms Gordge, who led our junior and senior dance groups, Mrs Golding and Ms O’Malley who have instructed our signing choir, and our friends from Teaching Services Australia who led our amazing Concert Band students. My sincere thanks to Peter and Fran Morris from McGrath Real Estate (Ourimbah) who generously sponsored this event. I also thank the school P&C who kindly organised the complimentary afternoon tea, led by Alana Cole, Victoria Keegan, Lisa Booth, Anita Pocock and Lorelei Barkley – your support of this special event was greatly appreciated!

Staffing Update Please note, that the following staff will be on leave over the next few weeks – Mrs McMurtrie (RFF) will be replaced by Miss O’Harae, Mrs Nagle will be undertaking the Learning and Support Teacher role (Monday – Thursday) whilst Mrs Burgess is on leave and Mrs Alamango (RFF) will also be on leave for the remainder of the term and is being replaced by Mrs Miranda (Thursdays) and Mrs Nagle (Fridays). Mrs Miranda is also doing a component of our Learning and Support timetable on a Wednesday whilst Mrs Burgess is away. We wish all of these staff our very best whilst they are on leave from our school.

P&C News – Thank you! I just wanted to acknowledge the commitment of our school Fundraising Co-ordinator, Venessa Wheeler, who last week braved the elements to ensure those families that placed an order as part of the P&C pie drive were well looked after. Over $450 was raised as part of this fundraising activity – THANKS Venessa!

Ticks and Crosses (Central Coast Express Advocate) – I would like to echo the sentiments of Toni Brewster (Gosford Hospital Auxiliary, Ourimbah branch) who recently wrote to the Express Advocate expressing her thanks to the Ourimbah PS Community for their kindness and generosity at the polling booth during the recent Federal election. Your ongoing support of Ourimbah PS is greatly appreciated!

Canteen Supervisor Position Please note, that the vacant Canteen Supervisor position that was advertised on iworkfornsw has now closed. Shortlisting and interviews will take place over the next 2 weeks. It is anticipated that someone will be appointed to this temporary role by the end of this term.

Sporting News There have been a number of PSSA events on this week and Ourimbah PS have had a number of talented students represent our school during the NSWPSSA Knockout Competition. Congratulations to the following teams who have all represented our school with pride - • The Boys Cricket team were unfortunately

narrowly beaten in their round 3 match against Cherrybrook PS who amassed 172 runs off their 25 overs. The Ourimbah boys fought valiantly scoring 156 runs from their limited overs. Brock M (5/6C) top-scored with 29 runs. A big thanks to Mr Wilson for coaching our team and to all of the parent helpers who assisted with transport and travelled to the game to support the boys. A special thanks to our 2 scorers Hannah Magnan and Susan Davidson.

• The Girls Football team were also narrowly beaten in their recent match against Wyoming PS (4-3 was the final score). My thanks to Mrs Miranda and Mrs Brown who coached this year’s team, as well as all of the parents who supported with transport and cheered the girls on during their games.

• Good luck to the boys Football team who will be playing their round 4 match next Thursday 20 June against Brisbania PS.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2020 We are now taking enrolments for all students who are eligible to start school in 2020 in our Kindergarten classes. Children may be enrolled in Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five years of age on or before 31 July in that year. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday. If you are unsure if your child is ready to start school or would like to access further information visit the link below - Starting School Please advise the front office (4362 1033) of your child’s name and date of birth and we will send enrolment forms home for you to complete and return. You will also need to provide your child’s original birth certificate, statement of complete immunisation from Medicare and proof of your current address. If you have any friends or neighbours who may have a child ready to start school next year, please let them know that it is time to contact the school for further information and to commence the enrolment process. If you know of other local families with school-aged students who are in our drawing area, but currently attend other schools, please ask them to contact the school office for an application form for enrolment. At Ourimbah Public School we believe in excellence, opportunity and success for all students. We are a dynamic school community committed to delivering a broad range of quality learning experiences, in a nurturing environment where all students have the opportunity to achieve their personal best.

Annual School Report - 2018 The Annual Report (2018) was presented at this week’s P&C meeting and provides the school community with a thorough account of the school’s operations, achievements and expenditures throughout the 2018 school year. It is the result of rigorous school self-assessment practices undertaken collaboratively with staff, parent/caregivers and student leaders through focus meetings and school satisfaction surveys. It provides a detailed account of the progress the school has made in relation to the school’s three Strategic Directions as set out in the School Plan (2018 – 2020). Our 2018 Annual Report can be downloaded from our school website through the following link – Ourimbah PS - Annual Report 2018 Alternatively, a hard copy can be obtained from the front office upon request.

Student Wellbeing – Got It Program

Page 4: ‘Endeavour to Excel’ ‘Excellence, Opportunity, Success’ Email : … · ‘Endeavour to Excel’ ‘Excellence, Opportunity, Success’ 121 PACIFIC HIGHWAY, OURIMBAH 2258 PHONE:

Getting on Track in Time (Got It!) is a school based program that commenced in NSW in 2011. It is funded by NSW Health under the Living Well initiative and is run by local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Got It! has been rolled out across NSW, following a pilot phase in Mount Druitt, Dubbo and Newcastle, and is based on a similar program (CASEA - Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Schools Early Action Program) that has been implemented in Victoria since 2004. Ourimbah PS will be participating in the Got It! Program during Semester 2 of this year. It is aimed at supporting students who are in their first three years of schooling (K-2) who may be experiencing difficulties with social relationships and attaining their academic potential due to behavioural disruptions. More information will be distributed about this wonderful initiative later this term.

Semester 1 Student Reports Classroom teachers are currently finalising the students’ reports for Semester 1 before they are submitted to the Stage Supervisors – Early Stage 1 (Mrs Kenny), Stage 1 (Mrs Wakelin), Stage 2 (Mrs Bowd) and Stage 3 (Mr Miller). They have put a huge amount of additional time in finalising assessments and writing reports for all students in their classes to ensure parents and carers are provided with accurate and detailed information about their child's academic progress, commitment to learning, and their social and emotional development. Semester 1 reports will be sent home with the students on Wednesday 3 July. This year, the student reports will be accompanied by some ‘Explanatory Notes’ to help clarify how certain grades (A-E grading scale) and effort ratings (1-5 effort scale) are determined. It will also outline the method our staff use when reporting about a child’s Social Development and Commitment to Learning. In line with our Growth Mindset philosophy, you will also receive a sheet titled ‘2 Stars and a Wish’. The purpose of this strategy is to provide an opportunity for self-reflection where parents/carers and the children themselves can identify two positive outcomes that have been included in the Semester 1 report and one wish that can form the basis of a SMART goal for Semester 2, and their future learning. Parent and Teacher Interviews / Conferences will take place in week 2 of Term 3.

Pre-Service Teachers For the remainder of this term, we are playing host to four pre-service teachers who are completing their teacher practicum from the University of Newcastle. We warmly welcome Jonathon Lowbridge (5/6M), Andy Klijn (KL), Bronte Doorn (2B) and Brynne Dickson (1K) to Ourimbah PS.

We wish them all the very best during this most important phase of their professional development as trainee teachers. Kind regards, Greg Francis (Principal) CLASSY ARTICLE MISS KIMPTON – 1K

Woosh! Term 2 is going by very quickly in 1K! We have been learning about onomatopoeia and how we can use it to make sound effects in our writing. During literacy groups, we created a big class poster of all the onomatopoeia we have learned. This week, we are reading ‘The Invisible Boy’, which has had us thinking about how random acts of kindness can transform an invisible person into a friend. We brainstormed all the ways we can help girls and boys feel included when we are at school. In personal development lessons, we are learning all about the brain and how it works. The word ‘yet’ has a super power in our classroom. We use it at the end of our sentences when faced with difficult tasks. Instead of saying ‘I can’t do it’, we say ‘I can’t do it, yet’. 1K continue to impress me every day with their positive attitude to learning. We love learning through play and the children are becoming self-regulated, independent learners. Louise Kimpton Classroom Teacher

‘JUST LIKE YOU’ - DISABILITY AWARENESS PROGRAM Over the past two weeks, all students at Ourimbah Public School have participated in the ‘Just Like You Program’, providing education on acceptance and inclusion of people living with a disability. The program has helped students at Ourimbah Public School learn that people with disability are the same as everyone else – they are 'Just Like You'. A special thank you to Saranna Shchultz from Variety for delivering engaging and educational lessons to all students over the two week period. Mr Chris Miller, Assistant Principal.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Ms Adams our Teacher Librarian is looking for volunteers to assist in the library. Tasks would include assisting with book covering, putting away class readers and the occasional shelving. If you are free to help on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday morning, it would be greatly appreciated. Training will be provided where needed. Please contact the office with your details or for further information, see Ms Adams in the library. SEASONS FOR GROWTH® PROGRAM Learning to live with change and loss Years 3 - 6 Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Ourimbah Public School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called ‘Seasons for Growth’ which will commence early Term 3. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. If you wish your child to be included in this program, please put your reasons in writing and return to the front office by Friday, 21st June, 2019. This program works with a small group of up to eight students for it to be effective, therefore selection will be a needs based priority. The program will run during school time throughout Term 3 for eight weekly sessions. Parents do not attend these sessions. Parents will be notified before the end of Term 2 if their child will be taking part in the program. Co-ordinators, Mrs Bowd and Mrs English. ALLERGY AWARENESS To support the students with allergy needs, we are asking parents that any peanut or nut containing products (for example – peanut butter, Nutella, some muesli bars) are not sent to school with your child in lunch boxes and/or as snacks that will be eaten in the classroom or on school activities. We cannot eliminate nut products in our school but we can try to minimise the exposure of nuts to those children who have severe

allergies and may require immediate emergency medical intervention. The school follows safe guidelines to limit nut transference and the children will be washing their hands after recess and lunch to avoid this. We are asking that parents work with the school, so that we can provide students with a safe school environment. SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC) NEWS WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN STICKERS Thank you to those families who have been collecting the ‘Earn & Learn’ stickers from Woolworths. SPORTS NEWS BOYS SOCCER KNOCKOUT The boys had a convincing 7 goals to nil victory over Umina in their round 2 game. The team is due to play Brisbania next week. Gary Edwards BOYS' CRICKET ROUND 3 REPORT Our boys played an eventful game against Cherrybrook PS on Thursday, 6th June. We won the toss and elected to bowl. Fletcher, Bailey, Matt and Hayden each took a wicket and Quin had an amazing run-out. Cherrybrook amassed a huge total of 172. Our opening four batsmen put us in a wonderful position to chase the total, scoring (Brock-29, Nathan-20, Hayden-11 & Bailey-12) 98 off 17 overs and giving us a real chance of winning. We'd need 10 an over to win! James then came out and smashed a quick 25 runs... Unfortunately, we were bowled out for 156 runs. So close! Thanks to all the parents who assisted with scoring, throw-downs, fielding drills and transport. We had a wonderful day and the team should be incredibly proud of their efforts. We are already looking forward to next year. Mr Wilson
