TheatrePerformance art stretches beyond music and dance, and Alliance française is pleased to present a different kind of storytelling experience through theatre. Kenyan artist John Sibi-Okumu pairs up with French artist Nathalie Vairac to bring us ‘Elements’, a play about a writer who is preparing a speech to give at a celebration of her work in a foreign country. In her effort to explain the creative process, she has to dig deep into her own life experience. Visual ArtWhereas a play such as 'Elements' centres on self-reflection, a new art exhibition offers reflections on an artist's surroundings. Renowned Tanzanian illustrator and award-winning cartoonist, Cloud Chatanda will exhibit a wonderful new series of drawings which give a subtle and amusing commentary on Dar life. Member of the Nafasi Art Space and regular exhibitor at the East African Art Biennale, Cloud has recently been selected to auction his work at the exclusive Circle Art Agency in Kenya. And the usual favourites: Oohlala Friday, the Music Quiz and the film screenings. These programmes continue to support the Alliance française in its mission to bring together the communities of Dar es Salaam alongside artists from around the world to share, celebrate, interrogate, challenge, understand and embrace our changing cultures and identities...and of course, to practise French !

Most of the information we receive about these 2 countries are based on political agendas, a history of sanctions and embargoes, and mainstream media reporting. This photography and multimedia exhibition allows the audience to see an alternate view by entering the reality of every day people. These photographs demonstrate the vibrancy of each country and the people’s determination to continue to thrive regardless of the many challenges they face.
Tengo Talento is a series of short documentaries about the new generation of talent in Cuba and their connection to their African heritage. World-renowned artists take to the streets to find the next talent in their field. Travel on a journey from Havana to Santiago searching for the next stars in Jazz, Hip Hop, and Rumba.

A writer is preparing a speech in response to an invitation to participate in the celebration of her work in a foreign country. As with every artist, in her earth to explain the creative process, she has to dig deep into her own life experience. Who will be able to tell with certainty, just by looking at her, where she is from? Appearances are often deceptive…
The play “Elements” is the result of a direct collaboration between Kenyan playwright and director John Sibi-Okumu and French actress Nathalie Vairac.

This is the story of a French pop legend who died tragically at the age of 39. Thirty years on, Claude François continues to fascinate, and here we discover why. Cloclo wasn’t just a phenomenally successful music star; he was also a shrewd businessman and master of self-promotion. He was also a father and a great lover of women. This is the portrait of a complex, multifaceted man who was willing to do anything to be loved...

Somewhere, in Afghanistan or elsewhere, in a country torn apart by a war... A young woman in her thirties watches over her older husband in a decrepit room. He is reduced to the state of a vegetable because of a bullet in the neck. Not only is he abandoned by his companions of the Jihad, but also by his brothers. One day, the woman decides to tell the truth to him about her feelings about their relationship to her silent husband. She talks about her childhood, her suffering, her frustrations, her loneliness, her dreams, her desires... She says things she could never have done before, even though they have been married for the past 10 years. Therefore, this paralyzed man unconsciously becomes syngue sabour, a magic stone which, according to Persian mythology, when placed in front of a person shields her from unhappiness, suffering, pains and miseries.

Theatre Of the OppressedWorkshop
Only for theSelected
Starting from the 15th of September, 25 young artists involved in the “art against poverty” project will participate to a training aiming to set up in Dar a group specialized in the techniques of the “Theatre of the Oppressed”. Theatre of the Oppressed is a set of tools aimed to allow anybody to share and stage oppressions. Once an issue has been staged and studied, participants then try to tackle the problem and rehearse solutions, all this in a safe theatrical framework.
Through very gradual games and exercises, participants will have the opportunity to bring on stage situations where they believe there’s injustice. Theatre will ease a playful and collective research on the roots of the problem. People will then try change and rehearse solutions in order to improve these situations in the society.

on stage at Alliance Française
Have you ever wondered who are the people asking for help at the stoplight every morning? Would you like to know the stories of the kids you see on the streets? Do you believe everybody has a part to play in triggering change and promoting social justice?
If so, don’t miss out our Forum Theatre event on 25th September. In this performance young artists will tell their stories and a facilitator will give everybody the opportunity to share information, try changes, propose solutions and policies.
You don’t need to be a theatre expert to participate. Everybody can intervene, but also observe.
If you are interested in understanding better poverty dynamics within Dar es Salaam’s society or you want to learn more about the “theatre of the oppressed” methodology come and enjoy the performance!

Kahlil Jacobs-Fantauzzi aka DJ Kaka Kahlil is a Puerto Rican Dj who moved to Dar Es Salaam from California. Growing up he acquired a deep love and appreciation for music from his family. He comes from a long line of musicians and grew up playing percussion and rapping in his father Fantuzzi's band. While attending UC Berkeley, Kaka Kahlil started his Dj career by having his own radio show and enjoyed discovering music from different parts of the world to share with his listeners. He then started a Dj crew with his brother Eli aka Dj 3rd Degree and they have not strayed from their vision: empowering people through music.
He has been spinning at schools, community centers, lounges, bars, clubs and film/music festivals since landing in Tanzania and has recently started teaching DJ workshops. He has had the opportunity to share his world music collection with countries from the Caribbean, to South & Central America, to India to West Africa and now Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. DJ Kaka Kahlil's philosophy is to take the crowd on a musical journey around the world; fusing urban sound, traditional drums, and multi lingual lyrics with one aim in mind: Making people move their feet to the funky beat.

The meeting of African, Caribbean and Brazilian music orchestrated by Martinican pianist Mario Canonge, Cameroonian singer and guitarist Blick Bassy and the talented young Brazilian percussionist Adriano Tenoriodd.
Mario Canonge was a pianist from Martinique F.W.I. He started playing in his teen years and accompanied the church choir at Francois Church in Martinique. From 1979, he studied music in Paris and took part in several bands.
Blick Bassy Picasso was right when he cruelly said: ”Artists?.There are two kinds: those who search and those who find.” Blick Bassy is one of those who find, one who discovered early on that the most intimate secret of art is humanity. Everything is intimately human in his music, without the slightest concern for passing fashion.
Adriano José dos Santos Tenorio was born in Aracaju, Brazil, the 22nd of April, 1981, to a great bass player father, Narriman Tenorio. He quickly revealed his great talent for music when built his first own drums made entirely of large dishes and casseroles

Prompted by her grandmother’s recollections, Jessica goes to Paris and finds work as a waitress in a bar frequented by actors and theatre goers. She meets three people who could not be more different but who are all looking for a new direction in their lives. Jean-François Lefort is a virtuoso pianist who burns with a newly acquired passion to bring classical music to people who are excluded from the concert halls. Fred Grumberg is thrown into a mid-life crisis when he learns that his father, Jacques, is about to sell off his art collection so that he can start a new life with a much younger woman. Catherine Versen is a successful actress who has become a star thanks to a popular television series, but she is desperate to take on more challenging work, on stage and in films. The subjects of a painting come to life and search for the man who created them in Jean-François Laguionie’s Le Tableau, a marvellous French animation unafraid of broaching big ideas with a potentially pre-teen audience.
The world of The Painting is a world divided. In an extravagant castle live the Alldunns: figures completely drawn, who in the wake of The Painter’s disappearance have declared themselves the naturally superior class. In the gardens beneath the castle live the Halfies: figures who are only partially coloured, barred from the castle walls, and treated with disdain by their self-appointed social betters. Finally, in the dark woods near the borders of the frame live the Sketchies: rough charcoal outlines who are hunted by the Alldunns for sport.
The imagination on display Le Tableau is any indication, they may be well worth tracking down.

Abderrahmane Sissako wrote and directed this offbeat, satiric comedy which imagines how the powers that be in the West might be forced to answer for the damage they’ve done in the Third World. Mele (Aissa Maiga) is an attractive Malian lounge singer married to Chaka (Tiecoura Traore), though their relationship is on the verge of collapse. In their eyes, the African continent isn’t in much better shape than their marriage, and one day a makeshift courtroom appears in the courtyard near their shabby home. In the courtyard, a handful of powerful international organizations, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, are put on trial for their crippling effect on the African economy; as the evidence is presented which explains how these “friends” of Africa have saddled the nations with debts they can never repay, witnesses explain how these actions impact the daily lives of ordinary citizens, who pass through the trial as they go on with their days.
