“FILANTROPIA ORTODOXĂ” ONG (short presentation)

The philanthropic activity of the Orthodox Archbishopric of Alba Iulia began in 1995, when the Social Work Department was founded. In order to diversify and to professionalize the offered services and also to attract more human and financial resources, at the initiative of a group of social workers and priests from Alba Iulia and with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Andrei, on September 11th, 2001, the Association “Filantropia Ortodoxă Alba Iulia” was founded – “the right hand of the Archdiocese in the Philanthropic work of the Church” (HE Archbishop Andrei).

While having its own legal status, the Association is a complementary structure of the Social Work Department of the Archbishopric of Alba Iulia, and benefits from its support and resources.

“Filantropia Ortodoxă Alba Iulia”, a non-governmental, philanthropic, Christian-Orthodox Association, with a social work profile, has a flexible and proactive structure. In 2004 the Association “Filantropia Ortodoxă Alba Iulia” underwent an extensive reorientation process, becoming an association for community development. These changes expanded the activity field of the association beyond the social work services and intend to provide also medical, cultural and educational services.

In this context, “Filantropia Ortodoxă Alba Iulia” Association, in close cooperation with the Social Work Department of the Orthodox Archbishopric of Alba Iulia, has gave birth to the largest social assistance structure in the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate:

- 12 homes (146 beneficiary children); - 1 residential center for children (16 beneficiary children); - 1 weekly housing for children (15 beneficiary children); - 1 center for developing independent life skills (15 children); - 2 day centers for children (50 beneficiary children); - 2 social canteens for children (80 families in difficulty); - 9 educational centers (225 beneficiary children); - 2 center-modules of special school (30 children); - 1 maternity center (6 mothers with children); - 1 counseling and therapy center for alcohol addicts; - 3 centers for the disabled; - 6 homes for elders (110 beneficiary); - 1 day center for elders (50 beneficiary); - 15 home care services for elders (520 beneficiary); - 1 center for homeless people (50 beneficiary); - 3 social canteens (160 beneficiary) - 1 counseling center pre and post abortion; - 1 counseling center for immigrants; - 1 dental surgery.
