Have students use their class textbook or the internet to complete the graphic organizer. The following are possible answers: 1) African Americans moved North to big cities to find jobs, escape racial violence and economic discrimination. 2) Northern cities did not welcome the massive influx of Africans from the South- Tensions began to escalate between
the two races. 3) The NAACP led protests against racial unrest. WEB Dubois led a 10,000 man march in New York protesting violence
against blacks. 4) The NAACP fought for African American rights and against lynching through legislation. 5) Marcus Garvey, founder of the UNIA, mobilized 500,000 African Americans through speeches, mass meetings etc.
He advocated an independent nation for Africans in Africa and he gained many followers. This movement was called the “Back to Africa” movement.
6) Jazz 7) Louis Armstrong- Jazz, astounding rhythm and rose to stardom in the jazz world Duke Ellington-a jazz pianist and composer Bessie Smith- a female blues singer, outstanding vocalist, became the highest paid black artist in the world. 8) Claude McKay- his poetry expressed the pain of African life in the ghettos Langston Hughes- his poetry described the difficult life of working class African Americans Zora Neale Hurston- wrote novels about poor, unschooled Africans living in the South. 9) Theme of art was the struggle of African Americans doing everyday life. 10) Led to civil rights movement (summary of Harlem Renaissance) I hope you enjoyed his product.
