What is Africas

Wildest Stories?We set out to record theaudio and video stories of

those elders who are willingto tell them so that theirreal life stories can be retoldthe way they were originallytold to current and future

unborn generations. Thestories are currentlyavailable to anyoneanywhere via the Internet.

Stories will also be sharedon radio, television,publications and field basedlistening stations in thefuture.

Africas Wildest Stories is a digital archive of

stories about nature and wildlife told by those

who experienced them and willing to share

them with anyone anywhere. The project was

conceived in the Landmark Education SelfExpression and Leadership Program

Why story telling for Wildlife?

The idea ofAfricas Wildest Stories came outof a conversation with a Maasai junior elderwhen he raised concerns that the wisdom,knowledge and traditions of his people weredying with the loss of the oldest age set, menand women of over 90 years.

Lions have always killed livestock but mypeople are losing their ability to tolerate thelosses. Now lions are being killed andKenyaslions are on the brink of extinction.NicksonParmisa

He warned that this loss of traditionalknowledge is already contributing to thechallenges that we face in the management

of natural resources such as wildlife, water,climate change, forest loss and habitatdestruction. This is leading to intolerance ofwildlife and the killing of lions, a species thatis already critically endangered in Kenya withfewer than 2,000 remaining

Who is involved?

Africas Wildest Stories is a

collaboration between theNational Museums of Kenya,Childrens book publishinghouse Story Moja andWildlifeDirect, a bloggingplatform for African wildlife

conservationists.

These stories will soon beaccessible to anyone atlistening stations at the

National Museums of Kenya inNairobi and selected fieldmuseums, through listeningand viewing stations andexhibitions.

How it worksThe idea is that young peopleinterview elders in their familiesor communities about the storiesof their lives.

Many of the stories are being toldby a generation of elders whowere born before independenceinto very different conditions ofenvironment, society, culture andeducation.

Now younger generations of Africans being raised in cities oreven overseas can hearentertaining stories and fall inlove with Africas spectacularwildlife heritage. This projectmakes connections between ourextraordinary cultural andbiological diversity and recognizesthat this is a vital part of Africas

heritage.

If we fail to record our history from those

alive today, we will lose important lessons

from the past, and we may never value what

is left, or even know what we have lost.

Africas Wildest Storieshonors our elders andcreates new awareness ofthe wisdom of the past,and the contribution thatthis will make towardsinforming decisions thataffect our futuresustainability.

The project createsrelatedness where it

didnt exist in our mindsbefore, for examplebetween culture andnature, or the elders andthe future of conservation

and the Kenyan economy.

When an elder passes on,knowledge is lost forever.There is no way of recoveringinformation from our

departed older generations.

audio recorders or mobile phones

What we have

achievedOur pilot project focuses on Kenya.We have recorded over 20individuals, both men and women ofvarious ages, in several Kenyanlocations including Nairobi, Kajiado,Mbirikani, Amboseli, Nanyuki, Mpala,

Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Naivasha andBaringo.

The stories represent numerous tribesincluding Maasai, Kamba, Samburu,Tugen, Kalenjin, Nandi, Turkana, Kikuyu,Elgon, Watha, and naturalists, gamehunters, Tour operators, farmers andhousewives.

Stories are uploaded onto Africas WildestStories on prx.org, wildlifedirect.org andmany are also in video format on ourYouTube Channel.

Not all stories are old!

Self-taught maker, who isnow 13, rigged up a systemof flashing LED torchesaround his familysstockade, drawing electricityfrom the solar panel andbattery circuit that poweredtheir TV.

Since installing the system,they have suffered zero lionattacks, unlike 5 of theirneighbors.

Richard was recentlyawarded a scholarship to

the Brookhouse School inNairobi, where he plans tostudy engineering.

Where we are heading next

Africas Wildest Stories will be officially launched atthe Story Moja Hay Festival in Nairobi September2012.

The public will have a rare opportunity to witnesslive story telling by our local storytellers.

We plan to build exhibit at the Nairobi Museum,which will allow visitors to listen to stories andcontribute. This will be followed by a travelingexhibit to reach rural museums throughout Kenya.

We will also choose 50 outstanding stories to beaired on national radio and TV as part of ourcontribution to Kenyas celebration of 50 years ofindependence. Future plans include setting uplistening and recording stations around thecountry.

By early 2013 we make available a Record-Your-Own-Story toolkit to enable anyone anywhere toparticipate and the model will be replicated acrossAfrica.

Africas Wildest Stories Partners

The National Museums of Kenya(NMK) is a state corporationestablished by an Act of Parliament,the National Museums and HeritageAct, 2006 no. 6 of 2006.

NMK is a multi-disciplinary institutionwhose role is to collect, preserve,study, document and present Kenyas

past and present cultural and naturalheritage. This is for the purposes ofenhancing knowledge, appreciation,respect and sustainable utilization ofthese resources for the benefit ofKenya and the world, for now andposterity.

WildlifeDirect is a Kenya and USregistered charitable organization

founded and chaired by African

conservationist Dr RichardLeakey, who is credited withputting an end to the elephant

slaughter in Kenya in the 1980s.Its main office is located in

Nairobi, Kenya.

WildlifeDirect was established in2006 to provide support to

conservationists in Africa directly onthe ground via the use of blogs,

which enables anybody, anywhere toplay a direct and interactive role inthe survival of some of the worlds

most precious species.

Storymoja is a 3-year-old publishingventure formed by five writers whoare committed to publishingcontemporary East African writing ofworld-class standard. Our books aremarketed to a wide Kenyan audiencefor entertainment rather than astextbook material.

We want to challenge the perceptionthat Kenyans do not read (other

than required educational text) byproviding them with thecontemporary stories they canidentify with and which we believethey are dying to read.

The Storymoja Hay Festival takes place from16th 18th September at the NationalMuseums of Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya. TheFestival is a four day celebration of stories,ideas, writing and contemporary culture

through storytelling, books, live discussionforums, workshops, debates, liveperformances, competitions, mchongoanoand music. It is organized in collaborationwith Storymoja, the Hay Festival (UK) andBritish Council.

The Storymoja Hay festival attracts the mostexciting local and international writers andthinkers. It promises both engaging and

stimulating discussions as well as light-hearted entertainment.
