I bet you’re feeling the same way. Amid curiosity, apprehension, anxiety and exhilaration, I’m glad you have made the choice to pick up the AFS catalog.

As an AFS Returnee of four years, I am still benefitting from that very choice. Your reason to study abroad may be different from mine, but I will guarantee you one thing: you won’t regret it.

Why did I want to study abroad? I love people. I love talking to them, learning about them, and learning from them. I am perpetually curious about the way different people live, and I wanted to discover it in person. Textbooks simply did not satisfy my interest in other cultures.

Of course, while my parents weren’t nervous when I took my textbook to the library, they were nervous when I took my passport across the world. They drew comfort, however, from how extraordinarily special this opportunity was for me. It’s frightening to leave home, friends, and everything you’re used to, but it’s also liberating.

I remember a few weeks after leaving my home; I was sitting in my host family’s house for dinner, trying to ask my host sister in their language to pass the cheese. Suddenly, uproarious laughter consumed the table. Only later did I learn that I had asked my sister whether she was, in fact, cheese. I realized at that moment that I had been taking myself too seriously. I released any remaining inhibitions that were holding me back from fully immersing myself in the culture. Then, I laughed along with them.

Little moments like this one, or finding my way to school, or sharing my culture with friends, transformed the way I view myself and others. Studying abroad during high school gives you a unique feeling when you return, one that you can’t shake until you travel again — once you truly experience life in another country, you feel uninhibited by geographical and mental boundaries. Your passions and goals are clearer, and you feel like you can accomplish anything.

This clarity and confidence led me to even more opportunities: I now study at a university in Scotland and major in International Relations and Arabic; I worked for AFS-USA in their New York office and helped grant other students the chance to study abroad; I returned to the country I call my second home and continue to hold a passion for its language and culture. I joined an improv comedy group to help bring people joy and applied for a White House Internship to help bring people change. My desire to continue learning is boundless, and my will to challenge myself, relentless. It all started with AFS.

That’s my story; now you have the chance to start the next chapter of yours.

Catherine Haslam

AFS Returnee, Egypt Summer Program, 2009

Dear Future AFSer,I’m excited for you — you’ve taken the first step. When I first considered studying abroad, I couldn’t believe it was possible to experience so many emotions at once.

These are the characteristics today’s colleges, universities and employers are looking for in their applicants and scholarship recipients.

AFS: Partnering with Schools Well respected by educators, AFS works in partnership with schools to foster student exchange throughout the US and abroad. AFS is committed to increasing the global competency of US high school students, and the impact is seen in the thousands of Returnees who bring cultural understanding and insight back to their high schools and on to their college communities.

Argentina, land of gauchos and tango, is also home to rainforests, glaciers and waterfalls. Buenos Aires offers a taste of European street life with its sidewalk cafes, expansive parks and first-rate museums while also staying true to its Latin American culture. Outside of the city you’ll find breathtaking hiking, skiing and fly-fishing in traditional small villages from the Andes up to spectacular Iguazú Falls.

SuMMEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

Want to live the life of an Argentinian high school student but can’t spend the full year abroad? Spend a summer living with a host family and attending an Argentinian high school. Just remember to pack your winter coat! The seasons are opposite ours in the US.

8 weeks

SuMMEr LANguAgE STuDY PrOgrAM

Spend July immersed in Spanish language. You’ll live with a host family and get to experience true Argentinian culture through activities like cooking classes, tango lessons and sightseeing tours.

5 weeks

Argentina A typical weekday:7am: Wake up and grab a breakfast of una medialuna y un submarino — a flaky croissant and glass of steamed milk with a dash of chocolate.

8am: Go to class. You’ll notice a few changes, though — in Argentina, the teachers move from class to class, and students stay in the same room for the day.

1pm: Head home for lunch with your host family, followed by a siesta.

4pm: The evening is all yours. Most Argentinian teenagers spend about an hour on schoolwork, and then take the rest of the afternoon and evening to do extra-curriculars like soccer, ballet or music, or to hang out at each other’s houses. On most nights, you’ll probably go from one house to another, listening to music and soaking in friends and culture.

7pm: Don’t forget to text your host parents to tell them where you are! Though you’ll get a lot of independence, your family will want to be kept in the loop.

9pm: Dinner in Argentina can be as late as 10 or 11pm in the North — it’s too hot to eat any earlier.

12am: Head to bed. Argentine siblings usually share rooms, so you can be sure you’ll leave at the end of the program practically as close with your host siblings as you are with your own brother or sister in the US.

Argentina is loud, vibrant, and warm (not just the weather). People are so welcoming, they will talk your ears off, but you will grow so attached to them you’ll never want to say goodbye. Don’t be afraid to open up! When you get home it will seem so strange that no one kisses each other on the cheek.

- Kimberly, Argentina Semester Program

AustriaYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

Austria has some of everything. From historic cities like Vienna and Salzburg to the stunning mountain vistas of Innsbruck and Tirol, there is something for everyone. Austrians are known for Gemutlichkeit — a cheerful demeanor and optimistic view of life. As a student in Austria, you may find yourself having lots of informal conversations about global affairs and environmentalism. You could also find yourself becoming an avid skier.

Bosnia and HerzegovinaYEAr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

You can literally reach out and touch the rich history of Bosni i Hercegovini, or BiH. At the meeting point of two great ancient empires, BiH is a unique and engaging mix of Eastern and Western culture. Once a place of clashing cultures, its people now have a reputation for warmth and hospitality. You may be surprised by their direct communication style — honesty is valued and they love nothing more than a good, open-minded debate.

BelgiumYEAr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

Belgium is modern meets medieval. With its three national languages of French, Flemish and German, Belgium has a variety of regional cultures. The country itself is so small, though, that no matter where you live you’ll be within a two-hour train ride of urban Brussels, the beautiful Belgian coast-line, and its four neighboring countries — Germany, France, Luxembourg and Netherlands. As an AFSer in Belgium, you can choose to be placed with a host family in either the Flemish or French speaking region.

gAP SEMESTEr COMMuNITY SErvICE PrOgrAM

Take time after high school to make an impact on a community abroad. Past community service projects have included working with people with disabilities, contributing to social service efforts for Belgium’s immigrant population, and teaching at a circus school. Clearly, there’s something for everyone.

I gained the knowledge of how both big and small the world can seem. You can be hundreds of miles away from your birth family but still feel at home.

- Sofia, Belgium Year Program

11 1-800-AFS-INFO • www.AFSuSA.Org

BrazilYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

Take in the flavor, rhythm and spirit of Brazil. Brazil’s rainforests, beaches and bustling cities are unrivaled — as is its Carnaval celebration, which takes place all over the country every year in late winter. Between the breathtaking beauty of its landscape and the liveliness of its major cities, it’s hard to be bored in Brazil.

ChileYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

“The country made for poets” is how Chilean author Pablo Neruda describes his country. Chile’s towering Andes Mountains and vast Patagonian region are only the beginning of its natural wonders. The Chilean population is just as varied, and due to its diversity, accepting of all kinds of people. Family is definitely a priority for Chileans; you’ll likely find yourself at a lot of big Sunday barbeques.

SuMMEr HOMESTAY PrOgrAM

AFSers on the Chilean summer program will spend 2 months immersed in rich Chilean culture by living with a host family. You may also get the chance to spend a couple weeks in a Chilean high school, taking classes alongside your local peers.

8 weeks

ChinaYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

China is a country of intriguing contradictions: skyscrapers meet temples, sprawling cities meet rural villages. While family is very important, the majority of a Chinese teenager’s life revolves around school. Education is a key cultural value, but you can also expect to experience Chinese culture through traditional activities like martial arts, ping-pong and handball.

SuMMEr LANguAgE STuDY PrOgrAM

Study Mandarin Chinese, one of today’s most important global languages, while living with a host family and exploring China’s unique culture first-hand. In addition to daily language classes, you’ll learn about the many facets of Chinese culture through cooking, calligraphy and martial arts.

4 weeks

Being in Chile for the summer was a beyond amazing experience. I have so many things to share with people here in the US — I have cooked Chilean food for my family and friends, and my Spanish skills are helping me SO much in class!

- Arielle, Chile Summer Program

Try to speak Chinese as much as possible, even if you barely know anything. It will make the people around you feel like you are really trying, and it will help you make friends.

- Lucy, China Year Program

Costa RicaYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations for AFS students, with good reason. Politically stable, prosperous and peaceful, many call it “the happiest place on the planet.” Whether you’re into rainforests and volcanoes, sloths and monkeys, or just want to learn Spanish while living with a warm and welcoming host family, Costa Rica is the place for you.

SuMMEr COMMuNITY SErvICE PrOgrAM

This program has it all: multiple community service projects, a homestay, and the opportunity to see several communities throughout Costa Rica. Past years’ projects have included working in the rainforest, volunteering at a school, assisting on an organic farm, and protecting sea turtle habitats. End your stay with a few days of well-deserved beach time.

4 weeks

SuMMEr LANguAgE STuDY PrOgrAM

Further your Spanish language skills through intensive, formal study in one of the most beautiful places on earth. You’ll receive 60 hours of language classes, studying alongside fellow AFSers from all over the world.

6 weeks

SuMMEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

Immerse yourself in the landscape, lifestyle, and culture of Costa Rica. Learn about community life by living with a host family while attending a local high school.

6 weeks

gAP SEMESTEr COMMuNITY SErvICE PrOgrAM

Spend a semester making a difference. Community service projects in Costa Rica range from rainforest preservation work to community development. You’ll work with AFS to determine the project that’s right for you, based on your skills and interests. No matter what you end up doing, you’ll make an impact.

A typical weekday:6am: Wake up to a cup of sweetened coffee, and a plate of gallo pinto — rice and beans, often sautéed with peppers and onions. Throw on your school uniform and head out for the day.

7am: Get to school in time for your first class. School will end anywhere from 1pm to 4pm, depending on where you live.

12pm: Take a break and join friends to buy a few empanadas for lunch, then wash them down with some delicious fresh-squeezed orange or papaya juice.

4pm: Meet up with your study group at a friend's house to go over the day’s notes. Education is a big priority in Costa Rica, so

expect your classmates to be serious about their grades. It’s said that there are more teachers than there are policemen in Costa Rica — a good sign of the culture.

7pm: Join your host family for dinner, sharing stories from your day. In fact, sharing is a must within families, so plan to also share books, music and even clothes with your host siblings.

9pm: Spend the evening with family, which can extend to multiple generations under the same roof.

11pm: Bid your family buenas noches and call it a night.

When asked what I will miss the most I always say ‘la gente,’ meaning the people. My family, friends, and neighbors will always have a part in my heart. I loved my experience.

- Stephanie, Costa Rica Semester Program

Czech RepublicYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

The Czech Republic’s choice for their first president, a poet named Václav Havel, is symbolic of the romance of this rich culture. Wandering the cobblestone streets of Prague, it’s easy to forget that the country itself was founded only a few decades ago. Outside of the historic capital of Prague, you’ll find a countryside full of farms and forests, writers and artists. As an AFSer in the Czech Republic, you’ll attend a local school called a Gymnasium, which will be challenging but rewarding.

DenmarkYEAr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale towns are only the beginning of the story. Denmark is known for its impeccable design, outstanding cuisine and accessible public transportation. And don’t forget the Viking ruins. As an AFSer, you could live with a host family anywhere in Denmark, Greenland or the Faroe Islands.

gAP YEAr AND gAP SEMESTEr COMMuNITY SErvICE PrOgrAMS

Experience Denmark while engaging in meaningful community service work. Past projects have been in the social services or educational sector, but there are also options for environmental work. Housing will vary based on the project and region.

EcuadorYEAr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

The brightly colored woven textiles of Ecuador will catch your eye at first glance. It won’t take long to fall in love with the mix of Spanish architecture and indigenous Andean flavor of Ecuador. Ecuadorians themselves are known for their warmth and hospitality, so you can look forward to jumping right into family customs and everyday life.

Embrace every moment of every day. Document your time to look back and remember. Take it all in. And have no regrets. I miss Denmark, but mostly what Denmark and my year there represented. And what I learned.

- Francine, Denmark Year Program

14www.AFSuSA.Org

EgyptYEAr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAM

Egypt, the “cradle of civilization,” provides an experience like no other. In dynamic Cairo and Alexandria, you can find as many traditional Muslim robes as you can Levi jeans, though outside of the major cities you’ll likely find more of a traditional, non-Western lifestyle. Like many cultures, family is a big priority for Egyptians, and celebrations always include aunts, uncles and cousins. Most Egyptians practice Islam or Christianity and have immense pride in their nation and culture.

SuMMEr LANguAgE STuDY PrOgrAM

Give yourself an intensive introduction to one of the world’s emerging critical languages. Egyptian Arabic is the most commonly spoken Arabic dialect, making Egypt the ideal location to immerse yourself in language study while also gaining an unforgettable cultural experience.

4 weeks

FinlandYEAr AND SEMESTEr HIgH SCHOOL PrOgrAMS

As “the land of a thousand lakes,” Finland literally sparkles. Much of what isn’t lakes is covered in evergreens, so you would be hard-pressed to find a Finn who doesn’t enjoy outdoor activities. Many have summer cottages, and you can expect to join in on a favorite pastime of spending time in a sauna. Iceland’s rugged terrain defines both the landscape and mentality of its people. Icelanders take great advantage of their glaciers, volcanoes, lava deserts and hot springs through outdoor activities and environmental action. Much of Iceland’s power and heat is generated naturally, as Iceland is crisscrossed by a network of rivers and waterfalls that provide hydroelectric power. In fact, 90% of Icelandic houses are heated by hot springs, which are also used for the greenhouses where Icelandic bananas are grown. Believe it or not, it isn't as cold as you’d think.

Although India has a reputation for crowded cities, most inhabitants live in rural areas. As an AFSer, regardless of where you live, get ready to taste lots of delicious foods and participate in big, colorful weddings.

I fell in love with everything that goes along with living abroad, from seeing a different language on billboards and hearing it on the radio, to seeing all the things I could identify as never happening in America, like a family of 4 sharing one motorcycle, with the mother’s sari billowing in the wind.

7am: Wake up to your first espresso of the day and a sweet, flaky pastry.

8am: Go to school. Most schools have classes just in the morning until 1pm, but go six days a week.

10am: Espresso number two. Take a break to stroll over to a cafe near school to get one shot of espresso and a glass of water for a euro.

1pm: Head home for lunch with your host family, or hang with friends and grab a slice of pizza or a panino. Italians know how to eat well — your lunch will probably be salad, pasta, olives, cheese and cured meats.

4pm: Spend the afternoon with friends, doing group study at a cafe, playing sports through a club team, or hanging out by the fountain in a nearby piazza. Oh, and of course you’ll have to get another espresso.

8pm: Be sure to get home for dinner with your host family. As the most important meal of the day, dinner in Italy means quality time with family. Brush up on politics and sports to be ready for a good conversation and a good meal.

9pm: If there’s a soccer game on after dinner, you can bet you’ll be watching it.

11pm: Take a minute to chart your day in a journal or blog, then head to sleep.

7am: Head to school on the train, meeting up with classmates along the way.

8am: Spend the day at school, until about 4-5pm. The day is long, but will go fast with challenging classes and the bento box lunch your host mom sent with you filled with lots of yummy foods each in their own little compartment.

5pm: Energize yourself and hang out with friends at an after-school activity like soccer, volleyball, or archery.

7pm: For dinner, join your host family at either their Western style dining room table or a traditional low, wooden table, where you sit on a mat on the floor. If it’s a special occasion, you might have sushi.

Experience

AFS has been a leader in the international exchange industry for more than 65 years. With a partner network of over 50 countries, AFS means quality across the globe. AFS Partners work in accordance with a shared mission, operating values and quality standards.

Safety

AFS is ready for emergencies if they happen and has a worldwide professional network of experienced staff and volunteers who provide support in the US and abroad. In the event of an emergency, 24 hour assistance is available in each AFS Partner country. An AFS Situation Response Management Team is in place at all times to monitor events throughout the world and respond as necessary. The safety and well being of AFS participants is our highest organizational priority.

Medical Coverage

AFS Participants are safeguarded with AFS’ medical coverage. AFS provides medical coverage to ensure that, when necessary, students will be treated as soon as possible, anywhere in the world. This secondary medical coverage is included in the cost of tuition.

Education

Through participation in an AFS exchange program, students have the opportunity to develop global competencies that will help them live, work and compete in our increasingly global society. Students with international experience gain a competitive edge in the college application process. Many AFSers are able to save college tuition by gaining exemption from college courses as a result of their new language abilities. Academic credit may be granted for coursework completed while abroad, and SATs can be taken abroad, if needed.

Accreditation

AFS is audited annually and complies with the program standards set forth by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET).

Tuition

Please visit us online at www.afsusa.org/study-abroad to find tuition costs for each program. Learn about our fundraising support and the many scholarship opportunities available. As you know, today’s global economy is always changing, especially relating to fuel and travel costs; in order to give you the most up-to-date information, AFS lists all current tuition information on our website. AFS reserves the right to add a fuel cost surcharge.

AFS ReturneesIt’s hard to say goodbye to the new friends you make abroad. Fortunately, the end of your program is just the beginning of your experience as an AFSer. AFS Returnees play a vital leadership role in mentoring future students, spreading the word about what they’ve learned, and shaping the future of the organization. As an AFS Returnee, you’ll be in good company — fellow Returnees are ambassadors, CEOs, editors, astronauts and Chief Justices. To learn more about what you could do after your AFS experience, visit www.afsusa.org/returnees.

AFS VolunteersAFS is powered by the experience and care of more than 44,000 volunteers worldwide. Overseas, volunteers welcome students to their host countries and provide local support. In the US, volunteers prepare departing students for their experiences abroad and connect international students with host families and schools. Volunteer opportunities range from hosting an international potluck for hosted students to interviewing scholarship applicants for an afternoon. Find out what’s going on in your community by visiting www.afsusa.org/volunteer.

AFS Host FamiliesAFS host families come in all shapes and sizes: big families, small families, families without children, empty nesters and single parents. But they all have one thing in common — an eagerness to open their homes and hearts to international students. Hosting a student is an excellent way to get an international experience without leaving home, and to share your own family’s customs with someone from another culture. Learn more about the benefits of hosting by visiting www.afsusa.org/host.

When you study abroad with AFS, you join a global community. Not only will you gain another family while abroad, you’ll also make connections with your classmates and fellow AFSers that can span the globe and last a lifetime.

With more than 424,000 AFS Returnees living around the world today, and thousands more AFS Volunteers and host families, you’ll be making connections for years to come.

No matter what the future holds for you, you’ll always be an AFSer.

I chose to be a Volunteer Group Leader because I want to help ease the transition from home to host country, and from familiar to foreign, just like my own Group Leader did. I truly feel like I am giving back when I am at AFS orientations.

Together, we can make a difference.Mission

AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

History

The American Field Service began as an ambulance brigade. Its heroic volunteer drivers, many drawn from American colleges and universities, risked their lives to provide medical services on the front lines of both World Wars.

When the AFS ambulance drivers returned from volunteering in World War II, they founded the American Field Service (AFS) to promote understanding and peace through international student exchange. They began their mission boldly in 1947 by exchanging 52 students from 11 countries formerly at war.

AFS Today

In an increasingly global society, AFS’ remarkable vision is more important than ever. Yesterday’s ambulance drivers can be compared to today’s AFS Exchange Students — ambassadors with the mission of increasing understanding between people, cultures and countries in order to create a more just and peaceful world.
