Intro Discussion: [5 min] You will need: 1. Questions Presentation:

• You know what I’ve noticed the past few weeks? Everyone has very different needs when it

comes to being alone or being with other people, right?

o Some people in our family like not having as many people around right now.

o There are other people in our family who can’t wait to get out and be around lots of

people again!

• No matter what, we are all having a hard time with being stuck in our houses, right?

• We like our schedules, and we enjoy seeing our friends. It’s REALLY hard having to be isolated.

• What do you miss the most when we’re isolated? (Allow for response.)

• Did you know that Jesus was also isolated when he was here on Earth? He took 40 days and

went into the wilderness where He was by himself. His friends weren’t with him. He didn’t do

the things He normally did, including eating! He was all alone in the wilderness, and hungry, for

40 days! That’s a really long time, isn’t it?

• Let’s read Matthew 4:1-11 to find out more about what happened to Jesus in the wilderness.

Word Time: Matthew 4:1-11 [10 min]

You will need: 1. Bible 2. Pen and paper

3. Video Clip Read to your kid(s): Matthew 4:1-11 International Children’s Bible (ICB) The Temptation of Jesus 1 Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was very hungry. 3 The devil came to Jesus to tempt him. The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘A person does not live only by eating bread. But a person lives by everything the Lord says.’” 5 Then the devil led Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem. He put Jesus on a very high place of the Temple. 6 The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off. It is written in the Scriptures, ‘He has put his angels in charge of you. They will catch you with their hands. And you will not hit your foot on a rock.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It also says in the Scriptures, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’” 8 Then the devil led Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and all the great things that are in those kingdoms. 9 The devil said, “If you will bow down and worship me, I will give you all these things.” 10 Jesus said to the devil, “Go away from me, Satan! It is written in the Scriptures, ‘You must worship the Lord your God. Serve only him!’” 11 So the devil left Jesus. And then some angels came to Jesus and helped him. It’s hard to be alone. We might feel tempted by Satan when we are alone. Satan might try to trick us into thinking the world is out of God’s control. He may try to make us doubt God’s plan. We might find that we get frustrated more easily, or sad more easily. We might be angry, disappointed, or bored. There are a lot of different emotions that can come from being isolated. (Take a piece of paper, and divide it into a few sections. Label each section with a different emotion your family is feeling during lockdown. Let each member write down the reasons why they feel that way and discuss them.) Do you know what Jesus did to handle big emotions like these? He quoted Bible verses and talked to God about it in prayer. In fact, Jesus told Satan NO with verses from….Deuteronomy! We don’t quote verses from Deuteronomy very often, do we? Sometimes, when we are feeling very BIG emotions, we think we are the only ones who feel them. But that’s not true. God’s Word reminds us that God knows EXACTLY how we feel. (Hebrews 4:15) Every emotion we feel, God felt! And we can talk to Him about those feelings. He wants to listen to your feelings and He wants to help you with them. Talk to God about how you are feeling today!

A few discussion questions: 1. Have you been sad when you couldn’t go out to visit your friends or grandparents?

2. Were you happy when you could go to the shops again?

3. How do you think Jesus felt being alone in the wilderness?

4. What did Jesus do to help him through the time?

5. How can you rely on God to get through this time too?

Let your kid(s) watch the following video clip – choose most suitable one according to age(s): Link: The Temptation of Jesus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc-x4qKY6Wc

Prayer Time: [5 min] You will need: 1. Nothing The Closing Prayer is extremely important. Not only does it signal that the lesson has ended, but it also gives you the opportunity to reinforce the lesson and share what was taught one more time. The children will know the lesson has real life application and meaning when it becomes part of the closing prayer. The closing prayer should be brief. Remember, the children are probably anxious to go on to the next phase of their day, and will not likely keep still to hear a long closing prayer. The Closing Prayer should always include the following:

1. Praise God for the opportunity to be able to hear His Word and learn from it today. 2. Application of the Lesson:

Dear God, thank You for always being here for us, even when we are alone.

We know that You are always with us. Help us rely on You during this tough time.

Amen.
