Appendix A. Faculty Admissions Task Force Proposal Charge: The Faculty Admissions Task Force is charged with reviewing a selection of student applications and providing guidance to Chief Admissions Officer Karl Smith on the criteria for student admission. The task force would meet approximately four times during the spring quarter to review the rubrics and tools used for admission and to evaluate approximately 20 first year student applications and 20 transfer student applications. The criteria recommended by the task force would be reviewed by Executive Council at its June 6 meeting and if accepted, would be applied to applications for Winter 2015. Proposed Membership:

• 4-6 members with wide representation of academic units, although every unit need not be represented

• Participation is voluntary and uncompensated • Leadership is provided by Karl Smith

Note: After the Task Force completes its work, a permanent Faculty Appeals Board will be formed in Autumn 2014. This small group will meet 1-2 times per quarter to address appeals of admissions decisions, of transfer courses, and of graduation deficiencies. The admissions criteria established by the Faculty Admissions Task Force will serve as important guidance for the Faculty Appeals Board.

Appendix B. Excerpts from Provost’s Letter on 2014-2015 Faculty Salary Adjustments From the Provost’s Letter dated January 14, 2014: “the effective date of FY15 salary adjustments is July 1, 2014” “The first step in the distribution process is ensuring that all continuing faculty members have been evaluated for merit, including part-time lecturers, clinical faculty-salaried, teaching associates, and research associates. Faculty Code Section 24-55 provides that faculty shall be reviewed by their colleagues to evaluate their merit and to arrive at a recommendation for an appropriate merit salary increase. Such reviews are to consider the faculty member’s cumulative record, including contributions to research/scholarship, teaching, and service, and their impact on the department, school/college, university, and appropriate regional, national, and international communities. Please review the merit review process outlined in Section 24-55 and begin planning for merit reviews now. All faculty members who are determined to be meritorious will receive a minimum 2% regular merit salary adjustment, unless they received a prior salary adjustment that precluded further adjustment. Faculty members who are determined not to be meritorious must be identified and will not receive a salary adjustment. In addition to the 2% regular merit pool, there will be a 2% additional merit pool. The distribution of the 2% additional merit pool should take into consideration factors of compression, equity, and merit. I request that you consult with your elected faculty councils, department chairs, and executive leadership with regard to the distribution of this additional merit pool and look to Faculty Code Section 24-55 A for guidance. Please remember that, pursuant to the Faculty Code Section 24-71 B.1, the additional merit pool must be distributed by departmentalized schools, colleges, and campuses as equal-percentage increases to each academic unit. Funds in vacant positions or merit funds not awarded to faculty may be reallocated to provide additional merit on the basis of compression, equity, or merit. All faculty in research, WOT, and other non-state/tuition-funded positions (including the B portion of an A/B salary plan) are to receive the minimum 2% salary adjustment if they are meritorious or have not had a prior salary adjustment that precludes further adjustment. Additional merit should also be awarded with the average increase at the 2% additional merit limit; maintaining an overall average merit increase of 4% within each academic unit. Funding for these increases should come from the applicable grant, contract, or other alternative source of funds relevant to the appointment.”

Business 309 11.4% +4.7% Explicit faculty vote on this proposal. Ass’t Prof., Accounting

Student demand, and accrediting req’ts for tenure-stream faculty.

Have a new Sr. Lect. In current AY; searching for add’l Sr. Lect (replacement) to start in 2013-14. Given that the relevant courses are oversubscribed now and students are starting in multiple qtrs., the inadequacy of these positions supports adding a position.

Sr. Lect., Econ/Finance

Specific needs for add’l sections of specific courses.

Education 82 94.7% -8.9% Reflects a meeting of the EdD planning team that included additional faculty from Education and Nursing.

Ass’t or Assoc Prof, Educ. Leadership

Need a second faculty member to conduct teaching, assessment, field work, capstone projects and state superintendent component of the EdD program.

The EdD planning documents proposed recruiting one senior faculty member to start June 2013, and a second in year 3 or later. However, I am concerned about adequate supervision of student projects and capstone writing, and agree that an add’l faculty member may be needed by Summer 2015.

IAS3 311 1.9% +9.9% Intensive faculty input Ass’t Prof, Geology Assumes Davies-Vollum does not return.

Ass’t Prof, Contemp Am. Lit

Student demand in the face of a faculty departure; needed by AMC, Am Studies, Writing Studies, and Core.

There was a recent faculty departure in this area. Should be written to encourage a diverse pool.

Ass’t or Assoc Prof, Native Am. Studies

Growth strategy. Assoc Prof would allow development of a Native Studies program.

Must be written to include a diverse pool.

Ass’t or Assoc Prof, Env. Studies/ Sustainability

Growth and developmeny, building up the Env’tal Studies program.

This area needs to grow across the campus

Ass’t or Assoc Prof, Human Rights

Desire for a HR major; current difficulty mounting courses for the HR minor (which is a tri-campus minor). Reflects strategic growth and loss of a faculty member in 2009.

Ass’t Prof., Nonprofit and/or Museum Studies

Nonprofit Studies needed for strategic reasons; could support the Museum Studies minor as well.

Search for Ass’t or Assoc, given the leadership needed in this area.

(Ass’t Prof., Ancient Mediterranean World History)

(Ass’t Prof., Applied Math)

How many degree programs rely on courses that such a person would teach?

(Ass’t Prof., Colonial Amer. Hist.)

(Ass’t Prof, Public Law)

Could support new initiatives with School of Law.

FT Lect CR, Psych Research Methods

Need a stable presence for req’d courses in a growing major. This requests reflects expected growth and creating more instructional stability.

FT Lect CR,Bio Instructional stability: Need a stable presence for offering consistent quality in foundation lab courses.

FT Lect CR, Into Psych

Growth: 49.2% increase in 100 over last 3 qtrs; this position would coordinate other TPSYCH 100 instructors.

FT Lect CR,Public Law

Growth and curricular gap: Particularly if we do not support an Ass’t Prof. search; would support PPE, Law & Policy, CJ, and Urb Stud.

FT Lect CR,Math Growth in Env’t Sci and other areas. IAS faculty feel this could subst for the lower-priority Ass’t Prof in Appl Math. Esp. needed to support new MS in ES.

It seems that the need here is for teaching power, and thus a FT Lecturer is appropriate.

Social Work 269 21.4% +28.1% Describes good faculty input. This unit has the highest proportion of SCH taught by PT Lects of any unit, by far; and a typically high proportion of SCH taught by FT Lect’s.

Ass’t Prof, CJ Catching up with growth, delivering online program

Note that the faculty agreed not to make an offer in Winter 2013 because they were not thrilled about the candidates. I am pleased with this level of discretion.
