na4 jtistice system. Criminal'Austice professionals have a centralizedlisting ofservices at their Lingertivp to assist them as they addressthe challenges of,contemporary society.

In 1977, NJ,JR1 published the first editton of the Directory of'Cr4minal Justice Iniormation Source'sv based on respontle to questton-naires Alistributed dnring 1976 to approximately 2,000 agencies andresearch organiztT ons. This third editionrepresents an attemptto Update preVi us editions and isbased on a survey of approximately

200 criminal justiee agencies conducted in 1978-79,, Questionnaites

were mailed to all the agencies listed in the..1978 edition as well

as to other agencies idqntified by NCJRS staff.; The information pte-sebted in this Director? is based on responses received.

The 149 agencies included feature such information resources ascomputerized literature search serVices, interlibrary loan programs,reference services, and technical assistaiic i! to criminarjustice pro-fessionals. The organizations are 1is0d tn alphabetical Order and

an index by criminal justice specialty is7provided to assist users.

Although every effort was made to contacts known information

sources, this Directory should not be considered an exhapstive com-pilation,ofcriminal justice sources. Because of editorial selection

requirements, unanswered iliquiries, incomplete questionvaires, andlack of information,'some sources may have been excluded.

As part of its continuing effort to provide up:to-date criminaljustice information,NCJRS plan6io publish periodic revisions of theDirectory of Criminal Justice Information Sources. Criteria foragencies to be included in the next edition of the Directory are pre-

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The following criteria will be used to select organizations for inclu-sion in futbre edit ions of the Directory of Criminal Justice Information Sources .

1. Service area must be regional or national in scope.

2. llembershtp requirements must not be unduly restrictive and must be spec-ified in the agency survey response lorm.

3. Providing information must be a major component of the agency's functions,'exclusive of consulting, training, or technical Assistance.

4. The information resources of the aiency must not be restricted to self-developed materials.

5. Agency must have capacity to respond to a largo numter of requests forinformation.

iThe purpose of the Directory is to facilitate access to criminal justiceinformation. If an agency does not contribute to the fulfillment of that col,-jective, NCJRS reserves the right to exclude it from the DirectorY.
