RIDER Test System is the essential tool for RFID & NFC manufacturers and testing labs, covering all product development phases from R&D to final certification.

It is based on T1141A, a ‘one-box’ stand-alone test instrument capable of executing the most significant RF and Protocol measurements covered in the currently RFID technology stan-dards operating in the HF band. Also, it contains the necessary hardware components to manage the signals received through the different test interfaces and the communication with the test applications installed in the Control PC.

User can operate the system from different software applications, the Test Manager application allows automatic control and execution of test cases and offer automatic report generation for evaluation of test cam-paigns, becoming a key component of the system when executing RF and Conformance test Cases.

General Overview

In addition to execution of confor-mance test cases, RIDER HF Test System offers solutions for customers working on development phases where R&D tools are needed to get samples ready before certification. For these use cases, HW resources on the instrument are complemented by a user driven application named Virtual Panel through which user will be able to observe and analyze the behavior of DUT’s (device under test) reducing debugging time.

The list of technologies and standards that can be tested with RIDER HF Test System include

• NFC Forum Digital Protocol Specification

• NFC Forum Analogue RF Specification

• NFC Forum LLCP

• NFC Forum SNEP

• ISO standards for NFC: ISO/IEC 14443 & ISO/IEC 18092

• ISO standards for RFID HF: ISO/IEC 18000-3 & ISO/IEC 15693

The product is available in two different models:

• T3111S RIDER RFID HF Conformance Test System

• T3121S RIDER RFID HF R&D Test System

Together with them, automatic positioning can be done with:

• T1142A Automatic Positioning Robot

Characteristics

The powerful processing and high accuracy resolution internal DSP offers the ability to measure and manage signals coming from devices under test (DUT). It also allows the RIDER RFID HF Test System to behave as a NFC & RFID device itself emulating dif-ferent protocols and thus enabling the execution of a complete test campaign using just one instrument.

Whereas other test systems com-monly require additional external instruments to set a complete test bench, RIDER HF Test System includes all necessary measurement tools in a compact package base on T1141A, control PC and necessary test interfaces. RIDER approach not only reduce test bench complexity but also speeds up user learning process time reducing cost and rapidly increasing return on investment.

For conformance test cases, either one by one, or on an automatic execution of test cases basis, Test Manager application supports operator throughout test campaign execution, saving operation time. The reporting engine also facilitates later analysis of results through its reporting module.

Besides conformance testing there are phases of NFC devices develop-ment where user need to test the behavior of the DUT even outside the limits defined on specifications, it may not be sufficient with executing conformance test cases and thus test cases parameters customization and free test definition is required.

To cope with above mentioned needs, RIDER RFID HF Test System hardware and software has been designed to provide users with enough flex-ibility to allow changing test cases parameters to cope with each testing situation need.

In terms of software, RFID HF Test System offers two options for the user. On one hand the Virtual Panel application permits the user sniff and analyze signals coming from the DUT, becoming the fundamental tool to understand bugs generated on early stages of development and to reduce time for their resolution.

On the other hand, beyond the above mentioned customization capabilities, RIDER RFID HF Test System includes an API which bring a flexible tool for defining customer test cases. This API enable customer working with a standard IVI driver that comprises the necessary SCPI commands to con-figure and control the T1141A core instrument of RFID HF Test System.

When testing RF Analogue, it is critical to accurately position the reference antenna and the device under test in the designated points within the Operation Volume area. Manual positioning wastes time and leads to errors due to lack of accuracy. To reduce testing hours dedicated to samples positioning dur-ing test cases, RFID HF Test System is complemented by T1142A Automatic Positioning Robot designed to ensure accurate automatic positioning of test interface as required by NFC Forum specifications.

User Interface

Test Manager software platform

The Test Manager is the user interface (GUI) and project management tool for RIDER RFID HF Conformance Test System.

It runs over Windows platform and the programming language used for the automation and implementation of the test cases is the LabWindows/CVI. Based on C language, it contains an interactive environment for developing programs and libraries specialised in data acquisition, analysis, presentation and instrument control applications.

The Test Manager Software platform is based on the following modules:

• Technologies Manager: user can have different technologies to test different DUT which may comply to different technologies

• Project manager: the user typically creates a test project (for each DUT) where all the information related to the manufacturer of the equipment to be tested, the equip-ment itself and the hardware/software versions will be stored. A database will allow easy registra-tion and recovery for the test cam-paigns already performed. Relevant information of a project includes DUT Data, ICS Edition, IXIT Edition, test Cases general parameters and applicable test cases (depending on ICS proforma)

• Sequencer Module: two types of operation either individual execution of test cases, or batches execution using a XML script

• Result analyzer and reporting: stores all verdicts from executed test cases and offer different views of data and statistics.

Virtual panel R&D interface

Beyond the scope of Conformance testing, the RIDER HF Tester also sup-ports R&D testing for NFC devices, smartcards, RFID readers and tags, and, in general, every device based on RFID technology operating in the HF band.

Since the RIDER RFID HF Test System is capable, on one hand, of capturing and analyzing the signals transmitted by the DUT without using external instrumentation like oscilloscopes or digitizers, and, on the other hand, of generating the necessary signalling in order to interact with the devices under test, there are several modules and options available:

• R&D RF measurements module• Protocol analyzer module• Protocol sniffer module

The R&D test solution uses the same HW platform (T1141A RFID HF Test Set) and a specific R&D software application based on a virtual panel interface which will allow the user to develop their own test applications programmed in VEE, LabView, C/C++, LabWindows/CVI or Visual Basic.

For RF testing, the Virtual Panel looks like a conventional instrument front panel in order to provide the end user with a familiar instrument control and the capability of a programming interface.

In addition to Virtual Panel, by means of the IVI driver provided the user can create their own interface and set of measurements, configuring parameters related to the acquisition signals (acquisition time, acquisition type, reference level, type of trigger, etc.), the signal generation (standard type, role: reader or tag, type of com-mand, modulation index, data rate, amplitude, etc.) or representation signal (display markers, scales, etc.).

For Protocol analysis purposes, the T1141A RFID HF Test Set emulates different devices behaviors in order to build and send all types of messages described in the protocol communica-tion rules and receive and process every EUT response for further analysis.

Beyond that, the RIDER RFID HF Test System Tester has been designed to generate signalling and produce

communication scenarios outside the limits and the requirements defined in the standards. Therefore, and in order to perform protocol testing based on invalid behaviors, the payload infor-mation could be modified in every single packet transmitted by the test tool in order to generate improper commands. Protocol scenarios with link timing responses over the specific limits can also be produced.
