State level Initiatives & Case Studies - Telehealth
24
• 2013 ‐Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services (DHS) introduced MUSIC & MEMORY℠ in 100 nursing homes across the state (2014 ‐ expanded to an additional 150 nursing homes).
Results:• Before the state’s Music & Memory Program, across all nursing homes in the second quarter of 2013, 17.4 percent of residents were taking antipsychotics; a year later, use had declined to 14.6 percent.
• In fall 2014, Wisconsin moved from tenth to fourth place among all 50 states in the national initiative to reduce use of antipsychotic drugs in nursing homes.
Lessons from Wisconsin…
Key Challenges: Adoption, Design & Connectivity
25
• 75+ Age Group = 34% internet adoption, 21% use home broadband, 56% use a cellphone (2012 study)
• ‘Abandonment Rate’ , ‘Digital Disengagement & Intimidation’ increase with age > UX Design Challenge / User Centered Design
• ISSUE: Poor Connectivity (wireless /high speed broadband /cellular coverage) in rural and low income areas > increases social isolation
Federal, State and Local Govt Solutions: ‐ Free WIFI access in community‐based organizations‐ Outdoor hot spots & kiosks that are accessible e.g. former payphones in NY ‐ Broadband adoption programs that include low‐tech older adults‐ e.g. OATS / www.seniorplanet.org
