BICYCLE WEEDER

Maintaining a pair of bullocks is a big challenge for many

in their small holdings, a tractor today seems an easy

alternative initially as many banks give generous loans.A multi-purpose cycle weeder named Krishiraja, developed by a poor farmer, Mr. Gopal Malhan Bhise from Maharshtra, is now popular.Mr. Bhise says, ” economic frustration to even buy a pair of bullocks led me to develop this device.” Ploughing 0.08 hectare of rain fed fallow land proved a tough job for the farmer without bullocks.

WORKING AND PURPOSE OF A BICYCLE WEEDER

Bicycle weeder is a multipurpose farm implement .

Developed by using inexpensive bicycle components.

The main part of the implement consists of the front portion of a bicycle, namely handle bar, front axle and the wheel.

A steel fork is connected to the axle and other end carries different attachments.

Separate attachments for weeding and tilling are attached to the working end using bolts and nuts.

Helps in changing the attachments as needed.

WORKING AND PURPOSE OF A BICYCLE WEEDER

The load in digging out the soil has been kept to the minimum by providing appropriate profiles and curvature to the implements.

Suitable slots are provided for attachments so that the distance between the blades can be adjustable to suit specific requirements.

IMPORTANT FEATURES O F A B ICYCL E WEEDER

This is very useful for pumping water up to the depth of 50 feet. the water discharge capacity is about 1200 -1500 lit / hr at wind speed of 10–12 km/hr. The performance may decrease while lifting water from depth more than 50 ft.

It can be fitted to a tube well or open well for light irrigation and potable water too.

It is an eco-friendly product with low initial cost and minimal operating cost.

TRACTOR

Page 8: Agricultural boons

TRACTOR

A tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort at slow speeds, for the purposes of hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or construction. Agricultural implements may be towed behind or mounted on the tractor, and the tractor may also provide a source of power if the

implement is mechanized. The tractor was invented by

Benjamin Holt in America.

SIMILARITIES

Both are used for ploughing.

They come with attachments for better ploughing , tilling, weeding and harrowing.

Both are mostly used in Asia ,mainly in India.

Both obey the Law of gravity(i.e. any two bodies in the universe attract each other with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.)

The main part of the implement is the handlebar, front axle and the wheel. A steel fork is connected to the axle and the other end carries different kinds of attachments.

The tiller attachment enables the farmers to cultivate medium-hard soil up to a depth of about one foot.

The classic farm tractor is a simple open vehicle with two very large driving wheels on an axle below and slightly behind a single seat, and the engine in front of the driver, with two steerable wheels below the engine compartment.

Plows and other tillage equipment usually were connected to the tractor via a drawbar.

It requires human effort.

It is suitable for smaller farms(INTENSIVE FARMING) and for economically weaker farmers.

Totally eco-friendly.

It is totally mechanised.

It is suitable for big farms(EXTENSIVE FARMING)and financially secure farmers.

Mostly leads to air pollution.
