It’s an exciting year ahead for local residents. With parks, wetlands, a Catholic primary school, and major roads all due to complete throughout the year. We’re looking forward to seeing what Harpley looks like by the end of 2020. Road connection works including the Ison Road Bridge are well underway and on-track for completion mid-year. Armstrong Road from the North of Harpley’s boundary will connect all the way through the community to the East West corner of McGraths Road and Bulban Road. This connection will provide the Harpley community with quick connection to established Werribee City Centre. Excitingly, the St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School construction has commenced and due to open in January 2021. If you wish to contact the school directly, please call 0422 048 938 or email [email protected].

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT

To date we have delivered 20% of the 116ha of public open space, that’s an estimated 3,293 trees. By the end of 2020 that number jumps to whopping 50% open space completion with another 1,931 trees estimated

to be planted in 2020 around your neighbourhood. You may notice hardscape works are underway to prepare areas for aquatic planting. This work is in the wetland east of Shearwater Stage 28 and Stage 29 as well as the wetland area north of Shearwater Place Stage 52 and Stage 53. With Townley Park Stage 67 now titled you can expect another community park to be delivered this year. The Harpley team are also working with the Wadawurrung people to extend the Discovery Trail.

PROUD OF MY PATCH

Harpley is a place we all want to feel proud of. Later in the year Lendlease will be rewarding residents who demonstrate outstanding front landscape and verge maintenance with $100 gift vouchers. We will be rolling this out monthly in the future with up to 5 vouchers to be awarded each month. Bob, wife Hedi and Ted the dog are proud Harpley residents who make the most of the parks and wetlands around them and help make Harpley beautiful with outstanding front and side landscape and verge maintenance. Well done Bob and Hedi!

Welcome to the Autumn Edition of the ‘Hello Harpley’ Newsletter

Have you seen the beautiful artwork on the hoarding located on Armstrong Road?

This artwork is a collaboration between Lendlease, RMIT University and the Wadawurrung who are the traditional owners of the land. The artwork reflects RMIT student’s interpretation of the Dancing Brolga Dreamtime story which we were generously given permission to share from the Wadawurrung.

Two artworks were selected by Traditional Owners, Melinda Kennedy and Stephanie Skinner to be displayed on 200m of hoarding on rotation.

If you have a moment, walk along the hoarding, explore the artwork (can you spot the brolga?) and just appreciate the rich cultural history we have at Harpley.

Recently the artwork was officially opened by the Wadawurrung with RMIT and the Harpley team in attendance. Everyone was honoured to take part in a smoking ceremony and welcome to country by the Wadawurrung TO Stephanie Skinner.

Harpley is a proud sponsor of this project and we thank everyone involved in bringing it to fruition. We encourage everyone to watch the video posted recently on the Harpley Facebook page to learn how this fantastic project unfolded.

We held our very first school holiday program on the beautiful green space surrounding the new Sales and Information Centre. Our aim was for kids to come together and engage in some fun, educational, active activities with the focus on participation and having a good time.

Kids (and adults) tested out their skills at a circus skills workshop, made their own giant bubbles and got sticky making slime! Traditional owner Stephanie Skinner treated the kids to creation stories, taught them traditional dance and painted their faces with ochre. Werribee Football Club ran a football skills clinic and well and truly wore the kids out with handball competitions, ball skills and drills and lots of games!

The weather tested us but all sessions were popular and well attended with feedback being ‘We can’t wait until the next one!’ and ‘We had so much fun, thank you Harpley!’

The Harpley team look forward to bringing the school holiday program back again in the future!

A Principal with almost a quarter of a century of experience in rural and regional Catholic schools has been appointed to lead the new St Joseph’s primary school in Werribee’s Harpley estate, opening next year.

Shelley Ryan will soon finish her role as acting Principal of two country schools on the edge of Ballarat and will begin the full-time job of overseeing construction of St Joseph’s as well as the even bigger task of building the school community.

In establishing a vision for St Joseph’s, Shelley will look to build a school that actions courage, service, kindness and respect. “I will be encouraging our students to be change agents in our community to make a real difference. Together with staff and families we will build a Catholic school culture where everyone feels included, valued and accepted,” she said.

“I see this as an opportunity for St Joseph’s to be a school that pursues the highest levels of learning for all students, promotes problem solving, creativity and critical thinking so that our students are prepared to tackle the challenges of the future,” she said.

When it comes to recruiting teachers for the school Shelley said she will be looking for courageous teachers who really see their students and enable them to reach their fullest potential, without limitation.

“Our teachers will be genuine and authentic people who will work collaboratively to build their own capacity as well as share in their knowledge, so that our teachers, parents and students will grow and flourish in a stimulating and innovative learning environment,” she said.

“The planned stunning new school facilities, which in time will have beautiful and stimulating gardens and interactive outdoor spaces. These spaces will invite students to enter an environment of beauty, wonder, curiosity and challenge to construct and problem solve.”

In her personal time Shelley loves spending time with her husband Patrick and their four teenage children on their farm, taking care of their alpacas and sheep. She also enjoys camping, reading, cooking (and eating!), laughing at a good joke and listening to stories. And also supporting her beloved Geelong Cats!

Construction of St Joseph’s $5.7 million stage one has begun onsite on the corner of Treeve Parkway and Fairhall Avenue, Werribee, within Harpley.

The name honours the history of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart who have been involved in the Parish of Werribee since 1906. The Josephite sisters were sent to Werribee to administer St Andrew’s school by Australia’s first saint, Saint Mary McKillop.

The stage one construction will cater for 200 students, with eight learning spaces over two storeys as well as specialist learning areas, breakout spaces and administration facilities. The school will be completed across a further two stages and will cater to a final school population of around 500 students.

Shelley will soon advertise for prospective families to book an enrolment information meeting with her to understand more about her vision for St Joseph’s and how the school will develop and nurture its students.

Families interested in attending St Joseph’s or meeting Shelley are encouraged sign up for news updates via the school website sjwerribee.catholic.edu.au. Alternatively, they can email [email protected] or call 0422 048 938 with any questions.

With a plethora of parks and open spaces both underway and already established, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is easy at Harpley!

Upon completion, the Harpley community will have more than 125 hectares of open space, including nine hectares of proposed village parks and gardens, barbeque areas and 26 kilometres of hike and bike trails.

Currently available to residents is Harpley’s Adventure Playground and Cultural Park, the Harpley Discovery Trail, Carinya Park and Shearwater Park.

Harpley’s Adventure Playground, located on Black Forest Road, attracts visitors of all ages with its diverse play equipment, including tree log tunnels, mazes, rain garden and sensory garden. The community’s Cultural Park celebrates and preserves a longstanding indigenous connection to the area and to the site.

If your family loves walking and exploring, then you’ll love the Harpley Discovery Trail. Here you’ll discover Harpley’s hidden history, learn about the Wadawurrung people – the Traditional Custodians of the land – and maybe even spot native, migratory and introduced birds. You can also download the Harpley Discovery Trail App to find lots of exciting things to do.

And if your children love playgrounds and open green spaces, you can’t go wrong with Shearwater Park located on the corner of Treeve Parkway and Tundra Esplanade, and Carinya Park, located on Jindalee Way.

Residents can also make the most of the newly delivered 32-hectare Gary Davidson Reserve neighbouring Harpley on the corner of McGrath Road and Black Forest Road.

With approximately 3,293 trees planted in 2019, and another 1,931 trees to be planted by the end of 2020, Harpley is committed to being a sustainable, green estate.

19% (22 hectares) of Harpley’s parks have already been established, and a further 30% (58.69 hectares) are to be delivered in 2020 and beyond, offering plenty of open spaces for your family to explore!

As well as offering a huge range of greenery, gardens and parks, Harpley is set to make a splash with a unique series of interconnected lakes and waterways, which will offer a range of different water experiences, from lakeside walk trails to proposed future waterfront shopping and dining. More than 60 hectares of open space will be dedicated to lakes and wetlands, with Harpley’s waterways to be divided into four distinct areas with individual character and features.

Sports will also be well catered for at Harpley, with more than 15 hectares of proposed sports fields, pavilions, pitches and courts to choose from including football, cricket, soccer, softball, tennis and netball facilities.

Whether you enjoy taking the dog for a walk, going for a morning run or getting some fresh air, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the wide-open spaces and keep active at Harpley.

Get outdoors and visit Harpley’s parks, trails and open spaces this weekend!

Is rubbish regularly dumped illegally in your community? If so, here are some things you can do to protect yourself and your neighbourhood.

• If you are not building on your land immediately, install a temporary CCTV to keep watch.

• Ask your builder to install a temporary security camera for the duration of the build. If the camera can also be left in place from handover of the keys to when you move in it serves the dual purpose of deterring other builders from dumping rubbish and criminals who may be interested in your white goods and hot water service.

• Ask your builder what policies and procedures they have in place for the correct removal (and even recycling) of building rubbish.

• And report any dumped rubbish you see to the EPA (epa.vic.gov.au) and to Wyndham City Council. Don’t hesitate to report multiple times to multiple agencies. The quicker that rubbish is removed the better.
