The AIB is seeking proposals from schools in North America wishing tohost the 2003 AIB Annual meeting. The host school, in consultation with theExecutive Secretariat, must identify the meeting venue, handle the logisticswith the hotel, plan site visits to locations of interest in the area (e.g. factorytours), and provide on-site staff support during the conference. The hostschool, which is critical to the success of the AIB Annual Meeting, tradition-ally sponsors an evening dinner or a similar gala event which showcasesthe institution and local culture. In the past, host schools have arrangedgovernment and/or corporate sponsors that have also hosted a dinner, lun-cheon, or reception. These occasions have been used to give a briefing ofthe investment opportunities and the economic climate in the area or tohave a senior corporate officer give a brief speech.

The elected AIB Vice President - 2003 Program will be responsible forthe conference program. This involves selecting the conference theme andmanaging the research paper solicitation, selection, and program organiza-tion. This activity is done in close cooperation with the AIB Secretariat andthe host university.

A host school representative should attend the prior conference as wellas the AIB board meeting that occurs just before the conference for face-to-face planning. The spring AIB board meeting often takes place at the con-ference location, providing an opportunity to go over the final details of thefall conference. It would be very useful for one or two staff members to go tothe 2002 meeting to help with the conference in order to learn how an AIBmeeting is run.

There are two cost items that the host school will be expected to fund:the cost of one gala event sponsored by the host school and the costs forsupport staff. Regarding support staff, a person at the host school is as-signed primary responsibility for host school activities. This person shouldhave a part-time graduate assistant or administrative assistant to work onthe conference beginning at least six months prior to the start date. Duringthe conference, the host school must provide staff for check-in and on-siteregistration as well as AIB office coverage. (During the peak registrationperiod, up to ten staff members will be required.) The host school staff willwork in close coordination with the AIB Secretariat. Depending on the lo-cale, additional staff may be required for the airport, buses, etc.Send your proposal to:

The proposal should include a complete resume ofthe leading scholar who would serve as Editor-in-Chief,as well as for those who would occupy key positionsas Deputy, Associate or Co-Editors. We anticipate thatthe team would require some release time from theirrespective universities for the key members of theeditorial team, the services of a full-time administrativeassistant, some physical facilities and equipment, anda budget for travel and communications. The financialarrangements necessary to meet these costs shouldconstitute one element of the proposal. The Editor-in-Chief’s university will be acknowledged in the Journalfor the duration of the agreement.

We would like to receive proposals by March 31,2001. A final set of candidates will be asked to presenttheir proposals at the Executive Board’s 2001 springmeeting. A transition period beginning in fall 2001 willbe arranged between the new and current editorialteams, with full responsibility for all issues, projectsand on-going manuscripts to be transferred to the newteam in its entirety by June 30, 2002.

The AIB Executive Board is seeking proposals fora new editorial team for the Journal of InternationalBusiness Studies that will become fully effective onJune 30, 2002. This will mark the end of a 6-monthtransition period from the current editorial team headedby Tom Brewer and sponsored by the McDonoughSchool of Business at Georgetown University and theCopenhagen Business School.

Contrary to past practice, the Executive Board hasdecided to split the editorial and businessresponsibilities of the Journal beginning on January1, 2002. We are currently investigating a number ofpublishing arrangements that include both in-housesolutions as well as a contract with a major academicpublishing house that will handle all production,subscription, mailing, and distribution matters. Thesefunctions, previously included in the contractualagreements with the editorial team, will now behandled under the direct supervision of the AIBSecretariat and its Executive Secretary, overseen bythe AIB’s Executive Board.

The new editorial team will consist of an Editor-in-Chief and a number of associates whose exact numberand responsibilities should be outlined in the proposal.The Executive Board is asking for a three-yearcommitment from the new team, renewable for a 3-year period by mutual agreement. The editorial teamwould have complete editorial responsibility for thecontent and organization of the Journal, would managethe manuscript review and selection process, andwould decide on the organization of Special Issues orSymposia. The Editor-in-Chief reports directly to theExecutive Board and is expected to attend both annualmeetings of the Board.

The AIB Fellows are asking for nominations forthe “International Dean of the Year” award for2001. The nomination should be limited to a c.v.and three pages of information about thecandidate which details the reasons why he orshe is deserving of this honor.

Nominations should be submitted by April 15,2001 to Peter Buckley, chair of the searchcommittee.

JAMES C. LEONTIADES announces his book, Managingthe Global Enterprise: Competing in the InformationAge (Financial Times/Prentice Hall, due out in Jan.2001). This is one of the very few books devoted tothe phenomenon of globalization as it relates to man-agement and the global company. sequent period of growth and insti-tution building that culminatedwith the complex and multifacetedorganization that we know today.1

Two years later, John Dunning, ar-guably the most influential scholarin the middle years of our history,delivered a presidential address inOctober 1988 at the San Diego meet-ings of the AIB on the future of IBresearch.2 Since then, alas, thehustle and bustle typical of our an-nual meetings has not allowed formuch reflection on long-term issuesof this nature.

Today, I want to return to thistradition, although I certainly lay noclaim to the lofty pulpit of my twopredecessors. We are not yet at our50th anniversary, nor do I considermyself qualified to chart our intel-lectual territory for the years aheadwith the prescience and acumenthat John Dunning showed in thatoccasion. But perhaps there aresome good reasons for us to take acritical, introspective look at our as-sociation today: (1) we are at thedoorstep of the next millennium,which always invites self-reflection;(2) we are experiencing dramaticchange in terms of our principalsubject matter (the multinationalcorporation), our customers (bothstudents and faculty colleagues),our environment (the advent of theInternet Age), and our competitors(other professional associations);and (3) we have no Executive of theYear speech, and thus a hole in theagenda. So I ask for your indul-gence as I review some of our re-cent accomplishments, discusssome critical challenges we face,and suggest some directions and

priorities for our Academy as wemove forward.

Our Annual MeetingIf John Fayerweather were here

with us today he would be aston-ished at the breadth, scope anddepth of this gathering. TheAcademy’s first annual meeting in1960 consisted of one session andtwo papers. The meeting held in1983, to coincide with the 25th anni-versary of the AIB’s founding, hadgrown to 37 sessions and 110 pa-pers. This meeting in Phoenix isevidence of the continued growthand interest in our field. It included82 different sessions with 222 pa-pers, plus 3 vibrant poster sessionsand 23 panel discussions with morethan 100 participants. The programcommittee received 387 paper sub-missions, with 44% of them comingfrom outside North America.Nearly 700 scholars attended themeeting, with 34% traveling fromEurope, Asia and other regions be-sides North America. No onepresent can say that he or she is re-turning home without a richer un-derstanding of our field and an ex-panded view of its intricacies andchallenges.

Our annual meeting is indeed amajor crossroads of intellectualthought; a vibrant market for ideasand insights into the issues that facethe modern global corporation andits many constituencies. It is also alively social agora where newfriendships are nurtured or devel-oped, and where plans come to-gether for joint research work or thesharing of pedagogical conceptsand materials. This annual meet-ing, I submit to you, is one of the

This does not mean, however,that we should rest on our laurels.Other academic groups are holdingannual meetings that increasinglyoffer an attractive alternative to in-ternationally minded faculty andresearchers. The annual meetingsfor the IM division of the Academyof Management or the StrategicManagement Society have drawnmany of our members with greaterand wider coverage of internationaland global issues at their sessions.Equally, all major functional societ-ies are increasing the attention theyaccord to international issues attheir own meetings, providing astrong incentive to marketing or fi-nance professors doing interna-tional work to prefer those venuesto ours.

In a way, we may argue that thisis evidence of our success; that thecriticality of international studies isnow accepted dogma throughoutacademia. As such, the “mission-ary” goals of the AIB as stipulatedby the founders in 1958 are consid-erably less important today. Thus,we must evolve in our objectivesand make sure that the focus of ourmeetings deals with the sort of is-sues that other disciplines and aca-demic organizations are less ca-pable of covering in breadth anddepth. The success of our recentmeetings in this regard should en-courage us to accept this challengeand continue to make each annualmeeting a cauldron of intellectualdebate on a fundamental issue ofthe day amenable to multiple dis-ciplinary approaches.

Begun in1970 under the editorship of the lateBill Ogram at Georgia State Univer-sity, it started publishing two issuesa year with less than 300 copiesprinted. Submissions averagedabout 50 per year in the early pe-riod, and the acceptance rate wasnearly 60%. By 1984, circulationwas up to 2,100, submissions hadrisen to 200 annually, and the manu-script acceptance rate dropped to20%. Today, the Journal’s circula-tion exceeds 4,100, we are process-ing about 280 manuscripts yearly,and the acceptance rate is just over11%. Citation rates have also risendramatically and the Journal rankshighly, if not at the top, of most rat-ings of academic publications in thebusiness and management fields.

But here too, competition hasgrown dramatically. Today, mosttop-tier functional journals – suchas the Strategic Management Review,the Academy of Management Journaland Review, Organization Science, theJournals of Marketing and MarketingResearch, the Journal of Finance, Ad-ministrative Science Quarterly, Man-agement Science, Marketing Science,etc., as well as a myriad of economicjournals – are devoting an increas-ing number of pages to articles deal-ing with international issues thatjust a few years ago would not havefound much support among theireditorial boards. Simultaneously,specialized journals such as theUN’s Journal of Transnational Corpo-rations, Management International Re-view, and the Journal of InternationalManagement are crowding the fieldand gaining respectability with in-novative and rigorous approachesto our field.

How to succeed in this increas-ingly popular and contested spaceis a critical consideration for bothJIBS and the AIB. Two actions re-cently undertaken by the JIBS edi-torial team anticipate one set of re-sponses. First, we need to attractmore and better papers and oneway to do so is to provide the bestservice possible to prospective au-thors. After months of hard workin revamping editorial proceduresand introducing electronic submis-sions and review processes, the edi-tors have succeeded in insuring that57% of all manuscripts are turnedaround in less than two months,and 91% in less than three months.Now this is clearly not good enoughand we can do better, but it is a farcry from previous experience wheremanuscripts languished in the sys-tem for months. And the entire edi-torial team and board are commit-ted to a goal of returning over 90%of all reviews to the authors withina 60-day period. We also need todistinguish ourselves in terms ofthe feedback and direction we pro-vide our submitters so that theymay improve their manuscripts tothe highest standards. The additionof many younger scholars to oureditorial board and the applicationof stringent criteria to remain on theboard are two policies aimed atachieving this result. Accession tothe JIBS Editorial Board should bea mark of distinction and honor thatmust be earned and sustained.

A second approach is to encour-age authors to tackle controversialand state-of-the-art issues by theuse of Symposia and Special Issues.The adoption of Symposia over thepast three years has been well re-ceived by our constituents, andachieved without any sacrifice ofquality or space. In fact, your Ex-ecutive Board is encouraged by thisdevelopment and is studying thepossibility of adding a fifth annual

number to the Journal to deal ex-clusively with special themes andissues.

In summary, JIBS has made greatstrides in its 30-year history, but itmust go further if it is to take itsrightful place among the top tier ofA-journals in the business field. Weshould make this a major priorityfor the Academy and reflect it in theCall for a New Editorial Team thatyou will find elsewhere in thisNewsletter.

The AIB ListservA relatively new product of our

association is the creation of the AIBListserv by which our members cancommunicate with one another ona myriad of research or pedagogi-cal issues. Serving now more than1,500 subscribers, its success hasbeen extraordinary. Research ques-tions and inquiries, discussions andsuggestions on pedagogical mate-rials, searches for research partnersand associates, and news aboutopenings and faculty positionshave dominated the electronic air-

space. The speed and scope of re-sponse is amazing. And the emerg-ing etiquette of behavior seems tocall for sharing the fruits of inquir-ies with all, thus spreading learn-ing and deepening the value of thenetwork to all users.

A Challenge Ahead:The growth and

distribution of ourmembership

In spite of these major accom-plishments, not all is well with ourassociation. One troubling sign isthe apparent peak in our member-ship in recent years. The graph be-low shows the development of ourmembership since 1958 in five-yearintervals3. As you can see, thegrowth that characterized our soci-ety for its first 40 years has reversedwithin the last five.4 Is this a trendor a temporary shift in the series? Iwill first review some of the pos-sible causes for this developmentand then suggest some action pro-posals.

Three explanations come tomind. One is that we have reachedsaturation in our main markets inNorth America and Europe, havingcovered all potential IB faculties inthe business schools in these areas.Another is that we are sufferingfrom normal attrition produced bythe growth of the international pro-gramming of other groups such asthe Academy of Management, theStrategic Management Society, theAmerican or European MarketingAssociations, TIMS, etc. Finally, wecould argue that the relevant spacefor IB issues and specialization hasshrunk as a result of globalizationand the spread of e-commerce.

Clearly, our responses must be cali-brated to the importance we mayattach to these various explana-tions.

Some support for the saturationhypothesis can be gleaned from thedata in Table 1 below. Our NorthAmerican membership hasdropped by nearly 5% in absoluteterms over the decade, most of it inthe last five years. While the weightof our North American members inthe association has dropped from74% to 61% (good news for thoseof us who wish to see a more bal-anced global membership), we can-not afford to do this by the loss ofmembers. To reverse this trend willrequire better services and recruit-ing. Given that North America con-tinues to be the main world pro-ducer of business PhDs, a bigger ef-fort must be made to attract doc-toral students to our association

while in the latter stages of theirprograms.

Europe is the bright spot in themembership story, having in-creased by nearly 200% in the de-cade, representing now a full 20%of our membership. The success ofthe Vienna meeting had somethingto do with this, but most of the in-crease was already in evidence inthe first half of the decade. Thegrowth of MBA programs in Eu-rope and the natural affinity of Eu-ropean scholars for IB issues hasobviously played a role in this.Asia, on the other hand, is a sourceof major disappointment for us. Inspite of the successful Seoul meet-ing in 1995, regional membershiphas dropped by 5%, accountingnow for only 12% of the total. In-creases in Korea, Taiwan and HongKong were more than offset bylosses in Southeast Asia. We have

not succeeded in capturing therapid increase in international busi-ness interest in the region, so ourloss of members is even more severewhen taking this into consideration.

As for the rest of the world, Aus-tralia and New Zealand haveshown rapid increases in member-ship, up from 2% to 5% of the totalby 2000. Our annual meeting inSydney next year will consolidatethese gains, and perhaps pull newmembers from S.E. Asia. Member-ship in Latin America, Africa andthe Middle East continues to showsigns of weakness, representingbarely 2% of our total.

If I were to single out some ma-jor challenges emerging from thesedata they would be two: (1) arrest-ing, and perhaps reversing, the lossof members in North America; and

(2) making a serious effort to in-crease membership from the mostpromising emerging markets in theworld – China, India, SouthAmerica and Eastern Europe. To-gether, the last four represent aminiscule 2.4% of our membership,whereas they account for 14% ofworld GDP and 58% of worldpopulation.

As for the competition fromfunctional societies, the truth isthat we can take pride in the factthat IB issues have now permeatedtheir agendas, meetings and jour-nals.5 And their growth, just as theincreased popularity of regionalassociations (e.g., EIBA, JIBA, KIBAand ANZIBA, to mention four ofthe most active), should be reasonfor optimism. Our response mustbe to increase the relevance of the

AIB to our current and potentialmembers to the point that theadded value from dual allegianceand membership justifies the $85annual fee and participation in ouractivities. For this, we must re-spond to the intellectual and pro-fessional development needs of ourconstituents through unique pro-grams and quality services.

Finally, it has been obvious forsome time that we must redefineour intellectual space beyond the“old” boundaries of functional si-los. We must go beyond the spentmodel of taking “domestic” scienceand adapting it to a diverse world.This requires a strong effort to iden-tify the issues where our memberscan make a difference; that are ame-nable to cross-disciplinary work;and which are of fundamental in-

terest to both multinational corporations and their ex-tended constituencies in government, labor, consum-ers and citizens. The “Janus Face of Globalization”theme from last year’s conference was one such hit inthis sense. Not only did it meet all the above criteria,but also it allowed us to tap into other disciplinary per-spectives to enrich our views on these complex and con-troversial issues.

A Proposed Set of ResponsesMy own conclusion to this analysis is that we must

move on all these fronts in order to impart new lifeinto our association. What are we doing? How do weget there? What else should we do? Let me offer a fewideas and initiatives for your consideration.

1. We must be more innovative and aggressive inattracting new members. We can do this by:

• Bringing our annual meetings to the heart of thesenew constituents. Your Board has decided to starta rotation schedule by which we will hold onemeeting in North America every second year, withthe intervening meeting in each of the majorcontinents or market areas of interest to our currentand potential members. Accordingly, a tentativeschedule for this decade will look as follows:

• Developing closer ties with regional associationsthat have similar goals. For example, part of the2001 meeting in Sydney will be coordinated withthe Australian and New Zealand InternationalBusiness Association (ANZIBA). Equally, we arecurrently in discussions with the BusinessAssociation for Latin American Studies (BALAS)to integrate the two annual meetings for 2004. Amajor effort will be made to reach similaragreements with other groups around the worldthat will be of mutual benefit to both sets ofmembers.

• Offering more electronic services that can link far-off members closer into the intellectual and

pedagogical network we represent.• Expanding our travel grant program beyond the

current level to include more Ph.D. students fromNorth America, Europe and Asia, junior faculty, andfaculty from under-represented regions. Weinitiated some of these grants this year, and withthe generous support of the Sheth Foundation, theAIB Fellows and other fundraising initiatives underway, we hope to offer up to 50 such grants annuallyin the future.

• Promote our “Adopt a Library” program to bringthe AIB scholarship to every corner of the globe.Currently only 27 members contribute the $35annual cost this implies, plus one generous memberwho funds 10 additional libraries. This represents1% of our membership. We must increase this byfive-fold at least.

2. We must fully adopt the electronic age in orderto increase the range and quality of services we offerour members and add value to their association withthe AIB. Among the initiatives underway or being con-sidered are:

• Expand the use of electronic submission and reviewfor all manuscripts. Over 70% of all submissionsto the Phoenix meeting were handled this way, andover 90% of JIBS submissions and reviews are nowhandled over the Internet. This will help acceleratereview processes and increase the attraction of thesevehicles for presentation or publication overcompeting alternatives.

• Promote “JIBS On-line.” Over 30 years of JIBSarticles are now in electronic pdf files thanks to thegenerous contribution of the Copenhagen BusinessSchool. All of these will soon be available to AIBmembers free of charge, together with book reviewsand, most importantly, articles accepted forpublication in JIBS but not yet published. Such asearchable database should be of considerable valueto members.

• With funding and help from a number of CIBERschools, we plan to create a search protocol anddatabase that will include IB working papers, cases,teaching materials, course syllabi, thesis abstracts,jobs postings, etc.

Thanks to the enormous efforts of Jim Wills and Lau-rel King at your Secretariat, and with the addition ofJohn Zhao from St. Louis University as our IT Advisor,we plan to continue innovating in these terms. Ofcourse, your inputs and contributions to this evolvingarea of technology and service will be essential andgreatly appreciated.

3. Increase communication with our members onissues of importance to them. Our Newsletter is nowon-line and we plan to increase the degree ofinteractivity to allow self postings of notices of researchand academic meetings, chat rooms on issues of inter-est, syllabi exchanges, and the like. In addition, underthe leadership of B.J. Punnett of the University of theWest Indies, we plan to introduce a new feature of theNewsletter tentatively called “AIB Notes” that will in-volve short articles and essays on issues ranging frompolitical and economic themes to pedagogy and orga-nization. B.J. will be putting together a small editorialboard to handle this responsibility and your interestand involvement are welcomed.

4. Expand the intellectual space of our focus by in-troducing an annual “Special Issue” of JIBS devoted totopics whose characteristics match those discussed ear-lier: impact, relevance and uniqueness of fit. We mayoccasional link this to the theme of the annual meet-ings, as it is being done now with the Janus Face theme,and thus provide an incentive for our best minds tofocus on these issues and build knowledge at the fron-tiers of our field. This can be achieved without sacri-ficing space for normal JIBS submissions and will en-hance the impact of our Journal and profession.

ConclusionsWe have certainly come a long way since that group

of 19 pioneers met to chart our association’s course over40 years ago. But we are also at a critical crossroads inour development that will require of all of us to con-tribute our energy and ideas to the tasks at hand. Forme, personally, the last two years have given me greatsatisfaction. I was honored to have been elected yourPresident; pleased to have had the opportunity to workwith such extraordinary people in our Board and Sec-retariat; and satisfied by the modest progress we havemade.

We are extremely fortunate in having a superb teamto follow. They will need our support, our initiativesand our critical comments. Thank you again for theopportunity to serve our cause. Have a safe journeyhome and see you all in Sydney next year.

Dr.Chandler is Professor Emeritus atHarvard Business School is activelyengaged in scholarly pursuits. Dueto failing health, he was interviewedvia video for the session. The selec-tion committee, chaired by AlanRugman, considered him to be anideal selection. Many panels andworkshops on various interestingtopics were held throughout theday.

On Sunday, November 19, the Ri-chard N. Farmer DissertationAward Finalists presented their dis-sertation topics in a special session.Selection committee chair, Jean-Francois Hennart recognized themall at the awards luncheon the fol-lowing day. Finalists includedDonald Ferrin of State University ofNew York at Buffalo, Paula D.

The AIB was pleased to grant 10 Latin American Scholarships to allowindividuals from under-represented areas to attend the meeting in Phoe-nix. AIB President Jose de la Torre initialized the gesture. The schoolschose the nominees, who otherwise would have been unable to partici-pate in the conference. The AIB subsidized the cost of registration fees,one-year membership and a three-night hotel stay for each nomineel. Allof the nominees came from Central or South America.

Latin American Scholarship Awards

Doctoral Travel Stipend AwardsThe AIB awarded $500 travel stipends to 29 of the over 50 doctoralstudents who applied for stipends so that they could participate in our2000 conference. Ten of the stipends were funded by the Sheth Foundation,one by the AIB UK and Midwest USA Chapters, and 18 by the AIBFoundation. Stipend recipients are asked to volunteer 10 hours duringthe conference in return for receiving a stipend. The stipends are awardedannually.

CurrentDean of Fellows Susan Douglasspoke on behalf of the Fellows.Brian Toyne, St. Mary’s University,was elected as a new AIB Fellow.The International Dean of the YearAward was presented by selectioncommittee chair Peter Buckley toJohn Rose of the University ofMelbourne. AIB President José dela Torre spoke about the history ofthe AIB. (See page 1 for his presi-dential address.) The weather was unusu-ally chilly for November, but at-tendees visited sites near Phoenixand also ventured out to view suchareas as the stunning Grand Can-yon and remarkable MontezumaCastle National Monument. A golftournament organized by GlenOmura of Michigan State Univer-sity on Friday before the start of theconference kicked off the fun.

All in all, this year’s conference

was a wonderful success. Thanksgo out to the program staff, hostschool, AIB staff, conference hotel,and numerous participants for alltheir contributions.
