Hanoi, is the capital of Vietnam and

the country's second largest city.

Hanoi ranks among the world's most

attractive and interesting cities. The

city's placid air gives it a gracious,

almost regal flavor, underscored by a

rich history that traces back more

than a thousand years -- a fascinating

heritage on display in well-preserved

centuries-old architecture. Hanoi is

Vietnam's cultural center, and

puppetry, music, and dance

performances are well worth your

time.

SHOPPING

Hand-embroidered tablecloths and lacquer are very popular in Hanoi. The hill tribes also sell colorful woven bags and clothing in the city. Good souvenirs are ceramics from Bat Trang village, silk paintings and hand-painted greetings cards.

The Old Quarter has numerous streets crammed with shops, but those of particular interest are on Hang Gai and Hang Bong. Off-the-peg clothing is always a good buy, but even better is to have clothes made up by one of the many tailors. The area close to Hoan Kiem Lake has some excellent shops including along Hai Ba Trung Street.

Bartering Tricks

Hanoi Street Vendor Try to master key Vietnamese words such as "Bao nhiêu tian"? (How much is this? –

pronounced: bow nyu thien) and "Dat quá". (Too expensive! – daht quah).

When you are given an initial price try a few "Oi Gioi Oi’s" (Oh my God! – pronounced: oi

zoy oi) and you'll find things will go a lot better. Remember – keep things lighthearted.
