1980  1988 Ronald Reagan (Republican)

How did "Reaganomics" impact the role of government and society?

Increased tax cuts for business

50% bracket down to 28% bracket

called "trickle down theory"

Decreased businessregulations

claiming that business best regulates itself!

Cut spending on domestic programs saying that the states should begin to decide which programs they want to continue or cut!

"Reaganomics" or supplyside economics claims that if you cut business taxes it will give business more money to expand. In turn, this will create more opportunities for new business and expansion along with increased employment!

When I talk of tax cuts, I am reminded that every major tax cut in this century has strengthened the economy, generated renewed productivity and ended up yielding new revenues for the government by creating new investment, new jobs and more commerce among our people.                  Ronald Reagan, Acceptance Speech at the 1980 Republican Convention

Reagan broke airtraffic controllers strike and it resulted in decreased union activity throughout the country. The end of the antiwar movement, the ebbing of the civil rights movement and the antiunion activity of the Reagan administration reduced opposition to his programs.

Most of the new jobs created were lower paying than the industrial jobs of the past. Many people began to call this period the "McDonald's" economy.

After the recession, business began to boom. Since this time, the number of millionaires and billionaires has increased.

Supporters of supplyside economics say that the growth of the economy then and since has shown that their ideas work. It rewards those that go out and are creative and have ideas that will help drive the economy.
