The correct selection of air filters is one of

the most crucial factors affecting the

operation and efficiency of a gas turbine.

The difference between a successful and

unsuccessful selection is measured in

significant economical losses and severe

impact to environment.

What differentiates Eagle Filters from other

filter manufacturers is that we do not provide

bulk filters for applications requiring

individual solutions. We will tailor the best

solution in view of technology and economy

for the current filter house of our customer.

Air Inlet Filters for Gas Turbines

m)

Compressor fouling occurs when very small particulate pass

through the filtration system and adhere to the

compressor blades. The adhesion of dirt to the leading edges

and surfaces of the finely balanced blades alters their

aerodynamic properties and therefore the mechanics of the

compressor. These changes are responsible for the

reduction in effeciency and output of the turbine.

There are no substantial differences between the best known

filter brands when examining the ability to filter

large particles, 1 µm and above. Capturing particulate of this

size and above is comparatively simple, F8 filters

have a >98% efficiency rate. This changes dramatically when

considering the particulate that cause most fouling,

0.2 - 0.4 µm, with a peak at 0.3 µm. At this size F8 filters only

achieve ~40% efficiency rate.

In Industrial areas these smallest particles, such as

unburned hydrocarbons, are very prevalent, primarily as a

result of human activity: combustion processes,

manufacturing, road traffic, air transport and shipping.

The effects of fouling can be measured in financial and

enviromental terms. The losses incurred by operators

often runs into many millions of Euros much of which could

be saved by employing better filtration.

Figure b) presents the pressure losses of some cartridge

filters commonly used in power plants. The pressure losses

of clean filters are close to each other, but as the filters are

used for a length

of time, the differences become notable. The typical average

pressure loss of Eagle Filters’ cartridge filter is more than 200

Pa lower than that of conventional pulse filters. Since Eagle

Filters’

cartridge filters feature a smaller pressure loss, they also

achieve the final pressure loss later.

Pressure loss is another manageable factor that has an ad-

verse effect on running costs. Pressure loss or DP is direc-

tionally proportional to production capacity. As Dp rises out-

put capacity drops. For large industrial machines a 100 Pa

rise in Dp represents a 0.15 % loss in output capacity.

You no longer need to accept an increase in

DP or loss of output due to moisture or power

restrictions relating to weather conditions. We

make no compromises with the quality of

materials used.

This is why our filters also operate reliably in the

harshest of climates, and impurities cannot pass

through the filter to foul the compressor.

This filter manufactured by a competitor of

Eagle Filters did not even last for two weeks in a

tropical environment.

The filters were replaced with filters made by Eagle

Filters, and their service life was extended to one year.

If the filter you are currently using does not meet up to

the special requirements of your application, if the

mechanical durability of the filter is poor, or if the

air volume of the filter has been specified incorrectly –

contact us!

Both laboratory tests and practical use by

customers have indicated that filters made by

Eagle Filters are reliable and well functioning. Since

the operating costs are reduced thanks to better

filtering efficiency and lower pressure loss, a filter tailo-

red for a particular customer’s needs is a much more

economical option than a mass-produced

filter.
