What is Language Translation? The language translation process involves rewriting “source language” material into another language. Effective translation is so accurate that the translated documents appear to have been originally written in the second or “target”, language.

! = Typing in Foreign LanguageTranslation is NOT just typing in a foreign language. Translation involves analysis, interpretation, deconstruction, decision-making. There is no one-to-one correspondence between languages.

Every language has its own framework/grammar/vocabulary which may or may not have a counterpart in another language. Merely knowing a foreign language isn’t enough. Good translators have to be first and foremost, good writers.

Words with Multiple Meanings

The German word “Leistung” for instance has at least 37 different English meanings which may mean one thing in one sentence and another in the next. A Translator must understand context, subject matter and audience to know which translation is right. It works the same way when translating from English to another language. The German word “Einsamkeit” means both “solitude” and “loneliness”. There are subtle but distinct differences in both these English words. A Translator needs to know which word is right to get the right message across.

While German speakers “SLEEP LIKE MARMOTS”, English speakers, “SLEEP LIKE LOGS”

Language Structure

For this reason, Language Translators must know how to break up/reorganize/rewrite sentences for best effect. A simple German sentence can sometimes be split into 3 English sentences; and while run on sentences and passive voice are acceptable in German, they are NOT in English.
