The Journey

Once Rasulullah (saw) was near the Ka’bah in a state of half wakefulness when three people came to him with a golden tray that was laden with wisdom and Imaan. They cut open his chest, washed it with the water of zamzam and filled it with wisdom and Imaan.

Then the Buraaq was brought before Rasulullah (saw). Buraaq is a special animal, tall and white, bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, and its every step is equal to the range of its vision. Other Prophets used to ride it before Rasulullah (saw).

The Buraaq was bridled and saddled, ready to ride and it was prancing out of joy. He was so happy to serve as a mount for the most beloved Nabi and also because for so long nobody had ridden it. The last prophet before Rasulullah (saw) was Prophet Eesa (as) who came 600 years before Rasululllah (saw)

Jibraeel (as), the angel accompanying Raulullah (saw) said to it, ‘How dare you prance before Muhammad (saw)? Nobody more honoured and beloved to Allaah than Muhammad has ever ridden on your back before him.’

When the Buraaq heard this, it immediately began to perspire heavily and became submissive. Rasulullah (saw) then mounted on it and travelled on it until he reached Baitul Maqdis.

When Rasulullah (saw) left Makkah for Baitul Maqdis in Ash Shaam, Jibraeel (as) accompanied him on the back of the Buraaq. He sat in the front as a guide and seated Nabi (saw) behind him. Like this they travelled on the Buraaq till they reached Baitul Maqdis, covering the distance of months in miraculous short time.

Once they reached Baitul Maqdis, Jibraeel (as) harnessed the Buraaq to the ring used by the Ambiya (as) and then they enetered the masjid. All the prophets gathered around Rasulullah (saw) and he led them all in Salaah.

When Rasulullah (saw) came outside of the masjid, Jibraeel (as) brought hime one vessel of wine and one of milk. Rasulullah (saw) chose the vessel of milk. Jibraeel (as) remarked, “You have chosen ‘al-fitrah” (i.e. the natural way)

Then Rasulullah (saw) set out for the heavens. A ladder of extraordinary beauty was lowered before him. As they journeyed upwards by the ladder, Nabi (saw) was escorted on his right and left by a procession of angels until they arrived in the heavens and the doors were opened for them.

Nabi (saw) set out with Jibraeel (as) until they reached the lowest heaven. Jibraeel (as) said to the keeper of the heaven, “Open!” He asked, “Who is with you?” Jibraeel (as) replied “Muhammad (saw)” “Has he been invited?” he asked. Jibraeel (as) replied “Yes!”

The keeper of heaven welcomed Nabi (saw) and said “Your coming here is indeed very blessed.” and opened the doors for them. Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) went higher up until they reached Adam (as). When Nabi (saw) greeted him, he said, “Welcome! O son and Prophet.”

HeavensThe gate to the first heaven is called Baabul Hafazah and an angel named Ismaeel is appointed over it. This angel has twelve thousand angels under him, and each one of these angels in turn has another twelve thousand angels under his command. After mentioning this Nabi (saw) recited the verse whose translation is:“And nobody knows the armies of your Rabb except He.”

On the first heaven, every angel he met greeted him with great joy and wished him well. However there was an angel among them, who, despite meeting Nabi (saw) and making duaa for him, did not smile. When he asked Jibraeel (as) who this angel was he replied, “This is Maalik, the keeper of Jahannam…

…If he were ever to smile at anyone (before or after you) he would certainly have smiled when meeting you. But (truly) he does not smile.” Nabi (saw) requeste Jibraeel (as) to tell him to show him Jahnnam. Jibraeel said “Malik! Show Muhammad the fire of Jahannam!” He lifted the lid of Jahannam and immediately …

…the flames of its fire leapt from the top. Nabi (saw) said “Jibraee! Tell him to order the fire back to its place.” At the instruction of Jibraeel (as), the angel at once ordered the fire back to its place and replaced the lid over it.

Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) then reached the second heaven, where again the keeper of that heaven asked the same question and welcomed him the same way. On second heaven Nabi (Saw) met Eesa (as) and Yahya (as) and they both said “Welocme! O brother and Prophet!”

Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) then reached the third heaven, where again the keeper of that heaven asked the same question and welcomed him the same way. On third heaven Nabi (saw) met Yousuf (as). He greeted him and said , “welocme O brother and Prophet”

Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) then reached the fourth heaven, where again the keeper of that heaven asked the same question and welcomed him the same way. On fourth heaven Nabi (saw) met Idrees (as). Nabi (saw) greeted him and he said , “Welocme O brother and Prophet”

Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) then reached the fifth heaven, where again the keeper of that heaven asked the same question and welcomed him the same way and opened the door for them. On fifth heaven Nabi (saw) met Haroon (as). Nabi (saw) greeted him and he said, “Welocme O brother and Prophet”

From there they went to the sixth heaven where the same questions and answers were exchanged. The gate was opened and they continued their ascent and found Moosa (as) there. He also said, “Welocme O brother and Prophet”

HeavensWhen Nabi (saw) went past Moosa (as) Moosa (as) started to cry. Someone asked hime the reason for crying and he replied “A young man has been sent after me and his followers who will enter Jannah shall surpass, in excellemce, my followers who will enter Jannah.” Moosa (as) was feeling regret over his ummah who disobeyed him and Allaah.

Then Nabi (saw) and Jibraeel (as) reached the seventh heaven where the same questions and answers were exchanged. The gate was opened and they went higher up until they found Ibraheem (as). Nabi (saw) greeted him and he said, “Welocme O son and Prophet”

Thereafter the Baitul Mamoor was presented before Nabi (saw). Nabi (saw) asked Jibraeel (as) about it and he replied, “It is al Baitul Mamoor wherein seventy thousand angels perform Salaah daily. Once they come out, they neve return.” Imagine how many angels there must be!

Then the Sidratul Muntahaa was brought before Nabi (saw) and he saw its fruits that were like very big pots and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. Sidra means in arabic a lote tree and al muntahaa means furthest or a place of ending. Sidratul Muntahaa is adorned with objects of such beauty that cannot be described.

Another Hadith explains that it was decorated with golden moths. It is also mentioned in the Hadith that this tree is so huge that a horseman could ride for up to a hundred years under the shade of the branches or that a hundred horseman can roam under its shade.

It is a very special tree as whenever an order of Allaah is issued, it first stops there before descending on this earth, and the deeds of man from below first stop there and are then listed above.

At the root of the Sidratul Muntahaa, Nabi (saw) saw four rivers. Two were hidden and two were visible. When he asked Jibraeel (as) about them, he told Nabi (saw) that the two hidden rivers were the rivers of Jannah and the two visible rivers were the Euphrates of Iraq and the Nile of the Egypt.

At Sidratul Muntahaa Nabi (saw) aslo saw Jibraeel (as) in his original form and Nabi (saw) was able to see him in his full glory with each of his six hundred wings unfurled so that they covered the entire horizon.

Majority of the Sahaaba like Ibn Abbas (ra) were of the view that Rasulullah (saw) saw Allaah Taala on the night of Miraaj. Some say that he saw Him with the eyes of heart and some say he didn’t see Allaah at all. Only Allaah knows the best as no Hadith mentions Nabi (saw) actually saying either yes or no to this question of seeing Allaah.

HeavensThereafter fifty Salaah were ordained upon Nabi (saw). When he returned, he passed by Moosa (as) who asked him “What did your Rabb ordain upon your ummah?” Nabi (saw) told him about the fifty salaah. He replied, “Return to your Rabb and ask Him to reduce it, since your ummah will not be able to bear it. I had tried my level best with the Bani Israeel.”

Nabi (saw) returned and requested Allaah Taala to reduce its number and He reduced it to forty. Moosa (as) again repeated what he had mentioned before. So Nabi (saw) appealed to Allaah Taala to further reduce the Salaah and it was brought down to thirty. Moosa (as) again asked him to ask Allaah Taala to reduce it, and …

… it was brought down to twenty. Then Moosa (as) repeated his advice, and after again requesting to Allaah Taala it was reduced to ten. When Nabi (saw) returned to Moosa (as) he advised him again, so he returned to Allaah to beg more leniency and he reduced it to five Salaah daily.

Nabi (saw) returned to Moosa (as) and he repeated what he had said to him earlier, but Nabi (saw) said, “So much have I asked my Rabb that I am now ashamed. I am satisfied and have accepted (the order of my Rabb).” Thereupon, an announcement was heard from Allaah Taala …

“I have retained the ordinance of Salaah and lightened the burden of my worshippers, and I will multiply the reward of every good deed tenfold (i.e. even though only five Salaah will have to be performed, the reward will be for fifty).”

Nabi (saw) was also taken to the Jannah where he saw domes of pearls and its sand was of musk. Nabi (saw) also said, “While walking in Jannah, I suddenly found myself along a river: On both its bank were domes of pearls that were empty in the centre (i.e. the whole dome consisted of only one pearl)…

I asked Jibraeel (as) what this was, and he said that it was the river of Kausar, which Allaah has granted me. When I looked at it closely I noticed that the soil (beneath the water), was an immensely fragrant musk.”

The journey of Rasulullah (saw) to Baitul Maqdis and then into the heavens, before returning to Makkah all took place in the space of one night.

Hadrat Moosa (as) performs Salaah in his grave

It is related by Anas (ra) that Rasulullah (saw) said, “On the night in which I was taken on the journey, I passed by Moosa (as) and he was performing Salaah in his grave.

People’s lips slashed with scissors

Anas (ra) narrated that Rasulullah (saw) said, “On the night of Miraaj, I saw some people whose lips were being cut with scissors of fire. I asked Jibraeel who these people were and he replied that “They are the sermonizers (among your followers) who say such things which they themselves do not do. They read the book of Allaah without themselves practising on it.

People scrapping their chests with their fingernails

Anas (ra) narrates that Rasulullah (saw) said, “When I was taken up during the Miraaj, I passed by people who had fingernails of copper and they were raking their own faces and chests with them. Iasked Jibraeel (as) who they were and he replied that they were those who used to eat flesh of their brothers (i.e. slandered them) and attacked their reputations.

The miserable plight of those who consume interest

It has been narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that Rasulullah (saw) said, “On the night of Israa, I passed people with bellies as huge as houses(in which people stay) and inside their bellies were snakes which were visible from outside. I asked Jibraeel (as) who they were? He replied that they were those who consumed interest (usuary).”

The reward of Mujhahideen

Abu Hurairah (ra) reports that Nabi (saw) was travelling with Jibraeel (as) when they passed by a group of people who were sowing seeds in to the ground and harvesting the crops on the same day. Immediately thereafter, the seeds would again be sown into the ground and the entire process would be repeated. When Nabi (saw) asked Jibraeel (as) who those people were, he informed him that they were those who strive in the path of Allaah. The reward for their every good deed would be multiplied seven hundred times, and for whatever they spent, Allaah would certainly reward them.

People’s head crushed with rocks

Nabi (saw) passed by another group of people whose heads were being crushed with boulders. After becoming smashed their heads would again resume their original shape, only to be crushed again. This process would continue ceaselessly. When he asked Jibraeel (as) who they were, he replied that they were those people who were neglectful of their Salaah. During the time of Salaah they would remain asleep.

They terrible state of those who withhold their zakaah

Then he passed by another group of people whose private parts, from the front and behind, were wrapped with rags and they were grazing like camels and cattle. They were eating daree (a thorny plant of the fire of Jahannam) and zaqqoom (a very bitter and foul smelling tree growing in the pit of Jahannam) and the smouldering stones of Jahannam. Rasulullah (saw) asked who these people wer and Jibraeel (as) replied,”They are those who do not discharge the zakaah of their wealth.”

A person carrying a huge bundle of wood

Then Rasulullah (saw) passed by a man who was struggling to carry a very large bundle of wood, which he was unable to bear; yet he wanted to carry even more. When asked who he was, Jibraeel (as) replied that this was the person who had been made a trustee of people’s belongings, but he has failed to discharge the trust. And yet he was eager and willing to take on more of the things of people in trust.

An ox attempts to enter a tiny opening

Thereafter, they came upon a tiny opening from which a huge ox emerged. After making its appearnce, the ox wanted to return into this small hole. Nabi (saw) asked who this person was and Jibraeel (as) replied that this was the person who, after uttering some very serious and sinful words, was full of remorse and wanted to retract them, but could not do so.

They fragrance of Jannah

Then Nabi (saw) reached a valley from which a very beautiful fragrance emanated. The smell was that of musk, and a lovely voice was heard. Nabi (saw) asked, ‘What is this?’ Jibraeel (as) replied that it was the voice of Jannah saying, ‘O my Rabb! Bring to me those people who were destined to stay in me, and fulfill your promise.”

Hearing the shriek of jahannam

Nabi (saw) passed by another valley from which an unbearable voice could be heard. When asked about it, Jibraeel (as) replied that it was Jahannam imploring Allaah: ‘Make over to me the people who have been destined to dwell in me, and fulfill your pledge.”
