    As summer rolls in the CAP calendar isheating up.Cadet encampment is scheduled for midJune. The initial response has been verylow. This is disappointing for the Wing andthe people who work so hard to have a greatCadet program. 1 Lt Justin Smith told methat the encampment is where we train thefuture leaders of cadets and CAP. He isright. Please help the Cadet program

    whenever you can.We have several training events coming up.Check the calendar for the dates.If you missed the Wing conference, youmissed a good one. Frank Brewer Jr addressed the Wing on participation in theBrewer Awards. He feels we need to submitour people for the award. You cant be awinner if you are not even entered in thecompetition. Commanders, AE officers, letsget the paperwork submitted.

    The Compliance inspections are showingproblems with tire pressures on Vans andaircraft. The SE region has a new policy,effective 1 June that will require therecommended pressure by labeled on all ACand Vehicles. Along this line we need totake good care of these assets. If your squadron has a vehicle, keep it in goodoperation condition. Keep it clean. Makesure the equipment is used and reported

    each month. If you dont drive the van, whyhave it? Put some miles on it each month.

    On the 11 th of June, there will be arecruiters class at Maxwell. Lt Col Jacksonand his staff have worked hard to developthis course. NHQ will attend with theintention to use the class for the basis for the new recruiter specialty. We will have thefirst recruiters in the CAP.

    July and August will be our practice SAREval and SAR Eval. This is where the Air Force grades our ability to perform the SARtask. We will be putting out more informationon this to each unit that will be evolved.

    Thanks to Col Glen Atwell and others, thestate has awarded the Wing a grant topurchase SDIS equipment. We intend toequip. two aircraft with the equipment andtrain crews in the operation of thatequipment. This will allow us to feed currentpictures of any area via satellite to awebsite. The aircraft can be giveninstructions via the same phone to retakepictures or move to another area. The wingis scheduled to receive #26 in the line of GLASS COCKPIT Cessna 182,s. It shouldbe available next year and will come with acomplete SDIS system. This will be areplacement aircraft and we will have to giveup one of our current aircraft.

    Finally, remember to be safe. The mostimportant asset of the CAP is its people.Commanders and members are all riskassessment evaluators. Look at all our events and ensure the risks involved are assmall as possible. If not, reduce them untilthey are acceptable or cancel the mission.We have to be safe and protect our peopleand equipment. If we dont, we will all suffer the consequences.

    Col John Tilton and Capt Bill Glenn

    Captain Glenn awarded the Silver Medal of Valor and the Civil Air Patrol Lifesaving Award .

    On August 9, 2004, while traveling from hishome in Talladega to the Pell City Airport,Captain Bill Glenn came upon a stoppedvehicle on the Stemeley Bridge, on ALHighway 34, that spans the Coosa River onLogan Martin Lake.As Captain Glenn stopped his vehicle tooffer assistance, he suddenly realized that a

    distraught female passenger in that vehiclehad jumped off the bridge into the river. Thedistance to the water was approximately 40feet and the water is at least twenty feetdeep at that point.

    Captain Glenn rushed back to theEastern Shore, summoned help, and doveinto the water from a boat dock. He thenswam almost 50 yards to reach the victimwho was starting to go under. He grabbedhold of her and swam back to the bankwhere he was assisted in getting her onto apier. She was injured in the fall but survivedthe ordeal.

    By all accounts, the selfless andheroic actions of Captain Glenn saved thiswomans life. He reacted in a timely manner which most certainly kept the woman fromdrowning. He did so while subjecting himself to personal peril.

    Captain Bill Glenns actions not onlyare exemplary of the best the CAP has tooffer but the best a fellow man has to offer.

    Captain Glenn was awarded theSilver Medal of Valor and the Civil Air PatrolLifesaving Award. The awards werepresented by Col John Tilton on 7 April 2005at a squadron meeting.

    It is my dutiful honor and privilege to reportto you that Bessemer Squadron representedthe Alabama Wing in exemplary fashion atthe 2005 Southeast Region CadetCompetition this past weekend at Ft.

    Benning, Georgia. Despite having toovercome monsoon rains, tornado warnings,and ceiling fans, Color Guard CadetCommander Erinn Scott led her squad to thefollowing individual event results:

    The Recruiting Class: 11 June2005

    The Alabama Wing will set a first for CivilAir Patrol, on 11 June 05 at NationalHeadquarters, the first recruiting class willassemble to begin training squadronmembers who want to become recruiters.The class will convene at 0800 hours, andfinish between 1630, no later than 1700

    hours. The class is open for seniors andcadets. The objective of this class is to trainnew recruiters who will be able to helpincrease our overall membership by learningthe who, what, how, and when of recruiting.This is one of the most exciting times for theWing, we get to set the pace for all of CivilAir Patrol; whatever we accomplish on the11th of June, will be the starting foundationfor all of our recruiter training nation wide.

    Let us have a great turn out and let theworld know that Alabama is alive and well,and capable of doing big things. Anyonewishing to attend a class will need to submita CAPF 17 for seniors, and CAPF 31 for cadets, using only the first page of eachform.     Talladega, AL--Thursday morning at thelocal Wal-Mart, Lt. Col. Al Jackson,Commanding Officer of Kingdom LifeComposite Squadron 124, and CaptainJulius Thomas, the squadron supply officer,presented Mr. Michael Evans, Wal-Martstore manager, with a certificate of appreciation for the generous contributionthey provided for the squadron general fund.Wal-Mart provide a check for one thousanddollars ($1000.00) This will help providemany needed items for the cadets andsquadron in general; we are hopeful thatother retail members of the community willfollow in the steps of Wal-Mart and supportthe squadron.

    Muscle Shoals Squadroncompletes First Aid course

    On Thursday April 21, 2005, at Helen Keller Hospital the Senior Members of the MuscleShoals Squadron completed the AmericanHeart Associations Live and LearnHeartsaver First Aid course. The course wasin three sections: General Principles,Medical Emergencies, and InjuryEmergencies, plus a section onEnvironmental Emergencies.

    The Heartsavers First Aid Course is video-based and includes peer practice and casediscussions. Although the first aidpresented in this course can be used in anysetting, the course was specifically designedfor emergencies in the work place.

    The course was presented by Linda Evansof Keller Hospital.

    Shelby County, AL Shelby County Flight of the Alabama Wing manned a recruiting

    and publicity booth at Shelby County Airportduring the Wings of Freedom display. TheCollings Foundation brought in their B-17and B-24 for a display and community widetours. Lt. Col Johnny Ward and Senior Member Walt Harvey were among thoseCAP members at the booth. Visitors to thebooth received Senior and Cadet materialswith information on all of the local units.

    Emergency Services

    ELT Found in Dumpster - Members of theTuscaloosa Squadron under the direction of Incident Commander Maj. Jean Spruillsuccessfully tracked and silenced a non-distress ELT signal to a dumpster behind athrift store on March 31. Ed Barnes, MarkGurganus, Benton Gup, Randy McGoughand Claude Poole participated in themission.

    The SARX training at Bessemer was wellattended. Paul Moses and Jimmy Mitchellprovided training aerial imaging andobserver training and Pete Norris providedUDF training. This was the first time a Wingevent was held in the new Bessemer Squadron building which is under construction.Lt Col Dennis Flowers

    MDA and collided with unlighted obstructioncausing critical damage to the leading edgeand root of the left wing. Aviator wasseriously injured and was not rescued for 12-18 hours after the accident.

    The left wing of the barn owl was caught onthe top strand of a barbed wire fence. Whendiscovered, it was holding to the secondstrand of the fence. It offered no resistanceto handling and was transported to a wildliferescue center. If it survives it will not flyagain.

    Even natural born aviators make mistakes.

    Squadron Leadership School

    Maxwell Composite Squadron hosted aSquadron Leadership School (SLS) over thePresident's Day weekend, February 19-20,2005, at Maxwell AFB, AL. This school iskey to a Senior Member's learning about theCivil Air Patrol and how the wing andsquadron accomplish the organization'sthree missions of Aerospace Education,Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services.The school is also a key component of completing Level II of the Senior Member

    Training Program. Upon completion of LevelII and some time-in-grade requirements, aSenior Member is promoted to captain andis ready to assume a broader leadership rolewithin the squadron.

    Fifteen Senior Members from across centraland northern Alabama came together toform the student body. The two days of in-depth briefing were highlighted by briefingsfrom officers of HQ CAP and HQ CAP-USAF. From HQ CAP, Lt. Col. JohnSalvador, Director of Operations, briefed thestudents on CAP's National Mission andCAP's growing role of Homeland Defenseunder the USAF's 1st Air Force. First Air Force is the USAF's air component of USNorthern Command charged with HomelandDefense. CAP has been integrated into thenon-combat role and many new high-techmethods of incorporating the patrol werediscussed. Next, USAF Lt. Col. RandyMathis, Operations Officer of HQ CAP-

    USAF, detailed the organizational interactionbetween the CAP corporation and the CAP-USAF liaison structure. He explained thatCAP-USAF is charged with oversight of thecorporation to ensure CAP can meet their USAF assigned missions and new role in 1stAir Force.

    Several of Maxwell's Senior Membersattended and a few of them even instructedduring the school, thus fulfilling a criticalcomponent of their Level IV requirements.But most importantly, a good time was hadby all. Keep your eyes open for the nextmajor CAP school, the Corporate LearningCourse (CLC) being conducted in northernAlabama.

    WING SAFETY BRIEFING World-wide Avian influenza a seriousconcern

    The CDC is warning that a current outbreakof Avian influenza that has claimed the livesof 42 people could lead to catastrophicoutcomes similar to a 1918 pandemic thatkilled up to 100 million worldwide. A total of 55 human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1), including one of the first cases of probable human-to-human-transmission,have been documented in Asia as of February 17, 2005.

    CDC Director Julie Gerberding, M.D. iswarning that a current outbreak of Avianinfluenza that has claimed the lives of 42people could lead to catastrophic outcomessimilar to a 1918 pandemic that killed up to100 million worldwide. A total of 55 human

    cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) in Asia(37 in Vietnam, 17 in Thailand and one inCambodia), including one of the first casesof probable human-to-human-transmission,have been documented as of February 17,2005.

    A CDC health update on Avian Influenza A(H5N1) dated February 4, 2005, reviews thecurrent epidemiologic situation in Asia and

    U.S. surveillance, laboratory diagnostic, andinfection control recommendations for avianinfluenza A (H5N1), first published in August2004. As detailed in the CDCrecommendations, identification of possibleimported cases of avian influenza A (H5N1)in the U.S. clinical setting depends onhealthcare providers consistently obtaininginformation on recent international travel andother potential exposures from persons whohave certain respiratory symptoms.

    The avian influenza virus has not yetdemonstrated a sustained ability to spreadquickly from person to person, and noinfluenza A (H5N1) viruses containing bothhuman and avian influenza virus genes,indicative of gene reassortment, have beendetected. Health officials fear, however, thatit will soon acquire that talent by mixing withother flu viruses.

    The government has a contract with SanofiAventis to make 2 million doses of a vaccinefor the H5N1 virus; clinical trials areexpected soon. The new vaccine is one of the first to be developed using a gene-swapping technique called reverse genetics.It is unknown whether the vaccine will work.If the vaccine is effective, having enoughreadily available is an additional concern.Vaccine manufacturers are reluctant toproduce pandemic quantities of a vaccine

    without government incentives, notesAnthony Fauci, director of the NationalInstitute for Allergy and Infectious Diseasesin Bethesda, MD. Those incentives includeguaranteed vaccine purchases, tax credits,and indemnification of liability in casevaccines lead to unexpected side effects.

    The avian influenza A (H5N1) epizooticoutbreak in Asia is not expected to diminishsignificantly in the short term. If these H5N1viruses gain the ability for efficient andsustained transmission between humans,

    there is little preexisting natural immunity toH5N1 in the human population, and aninfluenza pandemic could result, with highrates of illness and death.

    In addition, genetic sequencing of influenzaA (H5N1) virus samples from human casesin Vietnam and Thailand show resistance tothe antiviral medications amantadine andrimantadine, two of the medications

    commonly used for treatment of influenza.This would leave two remaining antiviralmedications (oseltamavir and zanamavir)that should still be effective against currentlycirculating strains of H5N1 .

    CADETS PARTICIPATE IN WINDTUNNEL EXPERIMENTS

    Redstone Composite Squadron, Huntsville,AL--Aerospace Education is alive and well at theRedstone Composite Squadron. During thepast several meetings cadets have beenbusy conducting wind tunnel experiments.The cadets built a mock wind tunnel to testand calculate how wind affects differentshapes. The Wind tunnel is designed insuch a way that it stands upright, fast

    moving air is introduced through the top of the wind tunnel. The mid section of the windtunnel is constructed of clear plexiglass.The cadets put their shapes that they havedesigned i.e. a square, triangle, pyramid etcand it hangs down in the plexiglass sectionof the wind tunnel. Air is forced from the topof the wind tunnel down over the differentshapes and the wind pattern is observed.Calculations are notes of the observationare made and recorded. This has been avery gratifying project for our cadets.

    On February 26, 2005 Alabama Winggathered at Tuscaloosa Airport for a Searchand Rescue Exercise. However, it was notthe ordinary exercise the wing usuallyparticipates in. Senior Members practices

    Command and Staff positions in a tabletopExercise. Maj Darrell McCulla, Lt Col GeneMitcham, and Lt Col Howard McGill ledthree groups using the same scenario. Thisallowed all participants to plan, execute, andevaluate their actions, as if they had beenactually sending pilots and ground teams onsorties.

    In the middle of the practice period, a signalwas given and member switched staff positions allowing even more training to beaccomplished.

    While Senior Members attended a SARXmeeting in the Bessemer Squadron building,cadets were learning and practicing DFingskills from Lt Col Pete Norris. ABC/33

    interviewed the cadets; Col John Tilton,Wing Commander; and Lt Col Tony Petelosabout the activities in the Alabama Wing. Paul Moses and Jimmy Mitchell providedtraining aerial imaging and observer trainingfor CAP member on flight crews.

    Senior Member of the Year Lt Col Lynn Hasha

    Lt Col Lynn Hasha became involved in CAPwhen her husband, a new leadership officer at Muscle Shoals Squadron, needed afemale chaperone for a cadet activity.Following that event and participation in aChristmas parade with the cadets she washooked and quickly became SquadronAdministration Officer. Due to her dedication to the CAP Cadet program Lt ColLynn Hasha became Director of CadetPrograms for Alabama Wing in 1990 andremained in this position until 1994.

    In 1995 Lt Col Hasha once again picked upthe reins of the Cadet Program and held thatpostion until 1996. During her tenure asDirector of Cadet Programs she had sevencadets go on to various military academiesand graduate as officers. But Lt. ColHasha's proudest accomplishments arehaving four cadets obtain the Spatz Cadetaward and one cadet as National Cadet of the Year during her time as Director.

    Lt Col Hasha became Finance Officer in1998 working closely National HeadquartersCAP to bring Alabama Wing's bookkeepingpractices into the 21st Century. To date, in

    addition to being a Master Communicator and Incident Commander, Lt Col Hasha hasreceived five Commander Commendations,and a USAF Unit Effectiveness Award.

    Shelby County Flight meets withSheriff Chris Curry

    Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry and CaptKen Burchfield met with Lt Col JohnnyWard, Shelby County Flight Commander,

    and Capt Jay Jerman, Emergency ServicesOfficer. A presentation of CAP capabilitiesand a discussion concerningcommunications between Shelby CountyFlight and the sheriffs office were agendaitems. Sheriff Curry and Capt Burchfieldviewed the CAP aircraft located at theairport. Lt Col Ward reports that a meetingwith the County EMA Director is planned for the future, as Shelby County flightdemonstrates what Civil Air Patrol canprovide for their county.

    Selection as an ARCHER traineeThe following is quoted from a memorandumsent out by Col Drew Alexa, Director Advanced Technology Group on 19 May2005.

    In order for a member to be considered for selection as an ARCHER trainee, he/shemust first successfully complete the onlineARCHER screening course and exam.Those members successfully completing thescreening course and exam will then beconsidered as candidates to attendARCHER training. Wing and RegionCommanders will use the results of thescreening exam to nominate CAP membersfor ARCHER training.

    In addition to test scores, Wing and RegionCommanders should consider a CAPmembers dedication/commitment to theorganization and past history of availabilityto perform missions. The AdvancedTechnology Group will use the Wing/RegionCommander nominations and make finalselections based on test scores, aptitudeassessment, and geographical basing of theARCHER systems.

    It is important to note that only thosemembers who receive formal ARCHERtraining and successfully complete thecourse will be certified to operate ARCHER.ARCHER training is an intensive three daycourse which will be conducted at Mojave,CA and Maxwell AFB, AL. Membersselected to attend ARCHER training willhave travel, hotel and other expenses paidby CAP.

    Safety Program Changes: CAP NationalCommander Maj. Gen. Dwight Whelessintroduced CAPs revised Safety Pledge andseveral new safety initiatives he personallydeveloped during his opening remarks at theWinter National Board Meeting. The pledgereads as follows: As a Civil Air Patrolmember I pledge to promote anuncompromising safety environment for myself and others, and to prevent the lossof, or damage to Civil Air Patrol assetsentrusted to me.     It is with regret that I inform you of the deathof Lt. Col. Willie (Bill) N. McClintock,128425. Bill was a member of Squadron 118and had served the Civil Air Patrol for over

    31 years. He originally joined the CAP inSeptember 1973.

    Also I have been informed of the death of Senior Member Charles Joseph Lapp,MBR# 352549. Charles joined the BaldwinCounty Squadron on 13 January 03. He issurvived by his wife, Robbie Lapp and their three children.
