ALADDIN – CLASS ACTIVITIES IPA’s Aladdin is a lively, dynamic and engaging show. It tells a story of Aladdin where he lives with his mother working in a laundry. He finds a magic lamp and is given three wishes. He uses these wishes to wish for better jobs. The three jobs he wishes to try are: a chef in a restaurant, an astronaut and a musician. He doesn’t like any of these jobs, and it isn’t until the end that he realises what he truly wants to be. The activities in this work pack are divided into three sections and different difficulty levels marked with * , ** and ***. They are also supported by digital materials that are marked with 🔗 and the links can be found within the document. The digital materials include Kahoot, Quizlet and LyricsTraining. You may choose to do this material in any way you like but it is designed to put the most essential parts of the show first. Some of the supplementary activities you may wish to use after you have seen the show for reinforcement.

Flash Card Stations For this activity you will need a set cards or flash cards printed double sided (see additional files) and four stations written on pieces of paper posted around the classroom (Laundry, Restaurant, Astronaut, Musician). Warmer Draw students attention to each of the stations. Make sure they know what each one means. Ask students to think of some words that might be related to each one of these things.

1- Put students into two teams. Present each one of the flash cards one at a time word first. Alternating back and forth between teams, have students tell you what station they think the card belongs to. If they are correct the get a point and can go and paste the card in the correct place. If they are incorrect the other team can guess. Do this until all the cards are posted.

2- Choose one volunteer from each team. Have students stand up. Give a definition of one of the words. The first student to run and take the word from the station gets a point. Continue for as long as time allows.

Wrap-up activity Pictionary Have students compete in teams drawing and guessing the vocabulary words. Memory Put the flash cards showing pictures on the board or on a table. Have students see if they can remember the words and turn each card over.

The story of Aladdin can help students understand the premise of the show. Choose whichever activity best suits your class or level.


-1 – Read the story and match each paragraph to a picture

1 -Aladdin and his mother, Mrs. Twanky work in a laundry. They work very hard and spend their days washing, sewing and ironing clothes. They dream of a better life where they don’t have to work so hard. Aladdin is worried about his old mother and wants her to have an easier life. 2 -One day Aladdin find a magic lamp in a pile of dirty clothes. He tries to clean the lamp and a genie appears. The genie says that he will give Aladdin three wishes. Aladdin wished for a better job. A job where he doesn’t have to clean dirty clothes. He wishes for a job with lots of good food and people to talk to. 3 -Aladdin wishes for a job in a restaurant. He loves the chef’s hat and the jacket very much. But Aladdin finds taking orders, cooking and serving food very difficult. Aladdin decides he doesn’t like working in a restaurant. 4 -For his second wish, Aladdin wishes to be an astronaut. The genie grants his wish and Aladdin gets his own space suit which he really likes! But Aladdin find learning new space words really hard. He also doesn’t want to fly spaceships. Aladdin decides he doesn’t want to be an astronaut. 5 -For Aladdin’s third wish he wishes to be a musician in a band! Aladdin gets his own musician’s uniform which he really likes. But when he starts playing, Aladdin finds being a musician really hard. It’s not very fun and the violin hurts his fingers. Aladdin doesn’t want to be a musician either! 6 -It is then that the genie realises what the perfect job for Aladdin is. The only problem is that Aladdin has used up all his wishes. He has no more left! What do you think Aladdin’s perfect job is?

No-Cut Alternative - Students can read and listen to the story as is. The story is in the correct order top to bottom in two columns. Students ignore letters and read and listen to the story and answer the questions.

A Aladdin and his mother, Mrs. Twanky work very, very hard. They have a family business, a laundry. They spend every day washing, ironing and sewing. They dream of a better life but there are always too many things to do and too little money to spend. Aladdin is very worried about his mother. She is getting too old to be working so hard for so many hours each day.

B The Genie grants him his second wish: Aladdin the astronaut. He gets his own spacesuit which he likes very much! But when Aladdin starts doing his astronaut training, he discovers that being an astronaut is very, very difficult. There areW so many scientific things to learn and so many physical exercises to do. He decides he doesn’t like being an astronaut either.

H But one day, Aladdin finds a magic lamp amongst the piles of dirty clothes. When he tries to clean the lamp, a genie appears. The genie offers to give Aladdin three wishes. Aladdin’s first wish is for a better job, somewhere with no dirty clothes and with people to talk to and lots of food. He wishes for a job in a restaurant cooking and serving food.

G Aladdin now has only one wish left. Aladdin’s third wish is for a better job, somewhere with no dirty clothes, no difficult customers and no horrible exercises. He decides he wants to do something fun. He wishes for a job as a musician in a band.

E The Genie grants him his first wish: Aladdin’s restaurant. He even gets his own chef’s hat and jacket which he likes very much! But after trying to attend customers, take orders, cook food and serve meals, Aladdin realises that working in a restaurant is worse than working in a laundry. He decides he doesn’t like it.

F The Genie grants him his third wish: Aladdin the musician. He gets his own violin and a musician’s uniform which he likes very much! But when Aladdin starts playing in the band, he discovers that being a musician is not as fun as he expected. He has to be very disciplined and to practise very hard every day. And playing the violin every day hurts his fingers. He decides he doesn’t like being a musician either!

D Aladdin still has two wishes. Aladdin’s second wish is for a better job, somewhere with no dirty clothes, no difficult customers. He decides he wants to do something exciting. He wishes for a job as an astronaut exploring space.

C It is then that the Genie realises what Aladdin’s perfect job is. The only problem is that Aladdin has used all his wishes. He has no more wishes left. What do you think is Aladdin’s perfect job and how do you think he will be able to do it?

As students listen, they grab the lyrics and put them in the correct order. Fill in the Gaps (Difficulty: ***) Print one copy of the activity for each student.
