ABSS Nurse of the Year

Graham High School is honored to call Ms. Hope Fields-Brown our resident school nurse! Hope was celebrated this past week by Alamance-Burlington School System and named ABSS School Nurse of the Year! Since joining the Red Devil community, Hope has demonstrated the ThinkRED spirit in her role as school nurse. She works with students daily, and while her efforts are often behind the scenes, students at Graham High School know she is there to assist, consult and provide guidance with any health related issue. She has been active in providing Red Devil students with not only health care assistance and advice but with information, field trips and club opportunities to encourage those interested in health related careers. She is an integral part of the GHS community and we are so proud that she has been recognized for all she does for Graham students - such amazing service and leadership! #thinkRED #GrahamGreat

Shout Out from E. M. Yoder Elementary Barbara Hestetune & Roberta Powell

The third grade students at E.M. Yoder Elementary School worked on a Wax Museum project for the past several weeks. Each student chose a person that had a positive impact on the world. They then researched the life of their historical figure and wrote a speech to showcase their life and positive impact on the world.

Furthermore, the students created a poster and dressed as their historical figure.

On Friday, May 12 the students conducted their presentation for peers, staff and parents.

Shout Out from Broadview Middle Yvette Chrisp, BMS Data Manager

In the United States, there are approximately 1.5 million people that suffer with the debilitating disease Lupus. There are approximately 5 million people worldwide that suffer from Lupus. Although it can occur in men and woman, 90% of those diagnosed are women. Lupus greatly affects most women who are in child-bearing age with women of color: African American, Hispanic/Latin, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islanders 2 to 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with it. People with Lupus can experience significant symptoms, such as pain, extreme fatigue, hair loss, cognitive issues, and physical impairments that affect every facet of their lives. Many suffer from cardiovascular disease, strokes, disfiguring rashes, and painful joints. For others, there may be no visible symptoms. Most Lupus sufferers do so silently and there is currently no cure for Lupus. A Lupus Foundation of America survey found two of three Lupus patients reported a complete or partial loss of their income because they no longer are able to work full time due to complications of lupus. One in three have been temporarily disabled by the disease, and one in four currently receive disability payments. May is Lupus Awareness Month The North Carolina Lupus Foundation started POP "Put On Purple for Lupus" Day to raise awareness for those who suffer from Lupus. My niece, LaParys Phillips, was officially diagnosed with Lupus in 2012 after many years of testing and treatments for other conditions. She is currently undergoing extensive chemotherapy drug treatment for a Lupus flare... we at Broadview Middle School are wearing purple today May 19th in honor of LaParys and all those who suffer from Lupus! Join us and Put On Purple for Lupus this month!
