p Who’s it for? Camp is for any child that has finished kindergarten through 5th grade. Campers will be divided into age groups so they can enjoy age appropriate activities. When is camp? Camp runs Monday through Friday and starts June 9 and ends Au-gust 29. Kids can come for the day, the week, or all summer long. Campers can be dropped off at the Y as early as 7:00am and be picked up as late as 6:00pm. Even though camp staff are onsite from 7:00am-6:00pm, camp activities initiate at 9:15am and con-clude at 4:30pm. A $5 late fee will be charged for every 15 minute time slot past 6:00pm. What do campers do all day? Daily activities include playing sports and games, swimming, gardening, doing crafts and going on trips to local parks and attractions. Campers swim everyday at the Y, and occasionally swim at other outdoor pools. Once a month, campers have the opportunity for an overnight stay at the Y. Campers also go on out-of-town field trips several times throughout the summer. See the field trips list. Where do they go & how do they get there? Parents are responsible to drop off and pick up campers at the Y every day. For field trips, a bus is provided and trans-portation and special events costs are included in camp fees. A newsletter is provided each week indicating the times of field trip departures and returns. If your camper misses the bus, we cannot transport your child. You must find transpor-tation for them. Camp Swim Lessons Children enrolled in our day camp program have the opportunity to sign up for swim lessons. Lessons are held for 30 minutes, 3 days a week, for 2 weeks at a time. Numerous 2-week sessions will take place throughout the summer. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn how to swim with no extra inconvenience to you! $10 per 3-week session.

1914 The Albert Lea Family YMCA was incorporated under the leadership of Judge A.V. Mayland, the first YMCA president. The office was located at 201 South Broadway. 1924 Mrs. L.E. (Lilian) Brown started the YWCA. In 1928, sewing, Spanish, painting, charm and per-sonality classes were formed. Classes were held in rooms rented over the old Rivoli Theater, which is now the Albert Lea Art Center. 1929 The Y started its camping program with the older boys camping at Beaver Lake and the younger boys at Pickerel Lake. 1940 The Y acquired Moraine Point (Myre Big Island State Park). The Y’s Men Club and the “87” Club kept busy building cabins for the Y’s Camp Moraine. 1950 YMCA rents space on the second floor of Plymouth Shoe Store. Prior to that, the YMCA offices were in the Hyde Building and in the Medical Arts Building. 1959 YWCA moves to the house on St. Mary Avenue. Pro-grams included Y-Teen Group, craft classes, flow-er arranging, table decora-tion, foreign languages and bridge. 1953 YMCA acquired its own building at 115 North Newton. Programs includ-ed adult leagues, horse-shoe pitching and camp trips

1972 The YMCA and YWCA move into the new building on 2021 West Main Street (current loca-tion). An open house was held on March 19 to showcase the new building that featured an exercise room, locker rooms, offices, meeting rooms and pool. 1975 The YMCA and YWCA combined to form the Albert Lea Family Y. 1979 An open house was held on April 29 to dedicate the new addition which included the gym, running track and rac-quetball courts. 1985 The “Eagle” room was estab-lished. It housed Eagle strength training machines. 1987 The summer day camp program began. The program was (and still is) offered 5 days a week for the entire summer. Children enjoyed day camping activities at Myre Big Island State Park. 1989 School-age child care initiated at the Y. Programs included School’s Out and Kid’s Day Off. These programs are still of-fered today. 1998 In July of 1998, the Eagle strength training machines were moved to what was named the Spirit Mind and Body (SMB) room. Other major fitness equipment was pur-chased as well. The SMB room is still a mainstay of the Y to-day. 2014 The Albert Lea Family Y contin-ues to offer services and pro-grams that enrich the lives of all ages and demographics. Some major programs include youth sports, swim lessons, fitness classes, personal train-ing, Summer Day Camp, School’s Out, and Youth In Government.
