Thanksgiving for the School Year

O God of all beginnings and endings, we praise and thank you for the gift of this school year. It has been a time filled with grace and blessings, with challenges and opportuni-ties, joys and sorrows. The days have passed so quickly, O Lord. The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy days, the exams, vacations, breaks, and assemblies, all have come forth from your hand. While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day, sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and appreciate just what you have been up to in our school. Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer. Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit. Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion, and bless us, according to your will, with the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams. Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead, and guide each day as you have done this past year. Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy. May we continue to grow in age, wisdom, knowledge and grace all the days of our lives. Amen. Author Unknown

FROM THE OFFICE OF CAMPUS MINISTRY If you have ever wondered if the expression “time flies when you’re having fun” is credible, I can only say that it has certainly been true for Campus Ministry! As I reflect back on the school year that has past, I am astonished of all that has taken place and the number of students that have been involved in numerous activities throughout the year. Let’s take a look back as well as a peek into some future possibilities. RETREATS Each of our freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors was able to participate in a day of reflection held off campus. Venues included Dominican Convent, Sparkill; Marydell Faith and Life Center, Upper Ny-ack and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, West Nyack. Various themes were chosen appropriate to the stu-dents’ theology curriculum and presenters included Maryknoll Sisters, Dominican Sisters and a priest from the Missionaries of La Salette. Feedback from campus ministry students has initiated conversation and valuable input for the planning of next year’s retreat day experiences. SPIRITUAL LIFE Our students, faculty and staff are blessed to share Eucharist together at least twice a month. Through-out the year priests have come from various parishes in Rockland, Westchester, the Bronx and Bergen, counties as well as the Dominican Order to celebrate Mass. As always, our liturgies are beautifully en-hanced by our student choir directed by Mrs. Rizzo. Our students are actively involved in the Mass as gift bearers, lectors and Eucharistic ministers. Next year it is hoped that more students will become involved in the planning and enhancement of our Eucharistic celebrations through the Spiritual Life Committee of Campus Ministry. Another wonderful occurrence this year was the presence of Fr. Dan Tuite who began coming on a regu-lar basis to hear confessions. Many students and faculty were able to take advantage of the opportunity to receive this beautiful sacrament. OUTREACH Our students here are amazing at responding to the Gospel mandate to care for their sisters and brothers in need. From Midnight Runs to Food and Toy Drives to Fasting, Raffles and Bake sales, our wonderful young men and women made a difference on the local, national and global levels. Some examples of or-ganizations who benefited from their outreach were: –BirthRight, One To One Learning, St. Dominic’s Home, Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, Meals on Wheels , Toys for Tots and more. Funds from various raffles helped to defray the cost of food brought to our sisters and brothers during Midnight Runs. Next year we hope to continue many of these events as well as be open to new endeavors. Several of our student leaders have taken the initiative to partner with the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill and Blauvelt and students at Msgr. Scanlan/St. Helena High School to help support Elizabeth’s Place. This combined ef-fort will support the rebuilding of this orphanage which was destroyed by the earthquake. More informa-tion will be forthcoming in the new school year. MISSION Albertus Magnus is a high school that true to the mission of its founders the Dominican Sisters of

Sparkill which is to: “Proclaim the Reign of God through a ministry of justice.” Through their efforts this

past school year they have given witness to the Gospel call of Jesus in many ways and have done so with

joyful enthusiasm! They are the true “Campus Ministers” and I look forward to journeying with them in

the year to come. Happy summer!!

MUSIC NOTES

CONGRATULATIONS! On Saturday, May 19th Veritas traveled to Hershey, PA to compete in their third Music in the Parks Festival. I am honored to report (for the third consecutive year) we came home with the first-place tro-phy! Special congratulations to Stephanie Ruppen who won the overall best soloist medal for her solo in "Kyrie." More than a dozen high schools from the northeast were represented at this event. Our trophy has been on display in the rotunda. SPARKILL PERFORMANCE On Wednesday June 6th, over 40 members of the music and drama depart-ment traveled to the Sparkill Dominican convent to visit and sing for the Sisters. The concert chorus and Veri-tas performed selections from the Spring Concert, and the cast of Hairspray was reunited to perform a short-ened version of the show. There were many Sisters in attendance and a wonderful time was had by all! We look forward to visiting with the Sisters again. SUMMER SHOW Several students from Albertus will be working with Mrs. Rizzo in a summer production of "Once On This Island" with the Summercliff Players. The performances will be at Briarcliff High School on July 27th and 28th. Save the date and support our students in their summer musical endeavors! What a great year for the music and drama department! It has been full of memorable musical experiences and won't soon be forgotten! To all those who participated and showed support, THANK YOU!
