STATEMENT OF MISSION
The mission of Albertus Magnus College
is to provide men and women with an
education that promotes the search
for truth in all its dimensions and is
practical in its application. Founded by
the Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of
the Springs, Albertus Magnus College,
faithful to its Catholic heritage and
the Judeo-Christian tradition, remains
dedicated to providing an opportunity
for learning which responds to the
academic needs and ethical challenges
of its students and of society.
This mission of Albertus Magnus College
derives from the intellectual tradition
of the Dominican Order whose essential
charism is the search for truth (Veritas).
Refl ective of the dedication and
commitment to service of our founder
and sponsor, we at Albertus assume
responsibility for the fulfi llment of
our particular service as an academic
community.

In September 2011 we concluded the year-long
celebration marking the 85th Anniversary of the
founding of Albertus Magnus College. We thank the
many alumni who shared with us their stories of the
ways Albertus enriched or changed their lives. We are
grateful to the alumni and friends who expressed
heartfelt congratulations, visited our beautiful campus
for special events and generously supported the
College in many ways.
Milestone celebrations, whether on a personal,
community or college level, provide opportunities to
review the past and its record of accomplishment.
Such events also remind us to look to the future with
renewed vigor and thoughtful determination. So it is
here at Albertus Magnus College where we celebrate
our Catholic and Dominican roots which have been
the hallmarks of our 85 years. It is this heritage that
energizes and strengthens us as we look to the future.
We are inspired by the enthusiasm of our students
of all ages; by the commitment of our distinguished
faculty; and by the service of our administrative
and support staffs. The College’s Strategic Plan for
2009–2014 is a framework for the future; it is a
document that urges us to continued development
and growth.
The multi-year renovation process at our iconic
Rosary Hall will yield a true transformation of our Library
into a 21st century technologically-enhanced and fl exible
space which is becoming a “Learning Commons” for
individual and collaborative study.
At summer’s end, we completed the renovation
of the Celentano Athletic Field and Track at our Prospect
Street campus, with the installation of a new turf
surface. This project signals a new era in athletics for
the College, as we expand our existing program to
include women’s and men’s lacrosse. In spring 2012
lacrosse will be a club sport, with intercollegiate
competition beginning in spring 2013.
As Albertus Magnus College grows and changes,
we dedicate ourselves to the fulfi llment of our mission
and purposes.
Faithfully yours,
Dr. Julia M. McNamara
President

The Traditional Day College, the heart of Albertus, is grounded in the liberal arts, which
provide the foundation for the knowledge and skills needed to build meaningful lives
and careers. Here, classes are small, and highly-qualifi ed faculty members know their
students by name. Here, students develop insight into the world and their place in it, and
develop a passion for lifelong learning. The search for truth in all its dimensions endures.
Albertus Magnus College offers a range of programs to meet the academic needs
of students at various points in their life’s journey. Sydney McAvoy ’11, for example,
pursued her undergraduate degree on a traditional timetable: right out of high school.
She found at Albertus a place that fi t all her criteria and gave her opportunities to
excel in the classroom and in internships, serve as a writing associate and math tutor,
as well as participate in activities such as the dance team and literary magazine.

I have built strong relationships with many of the faculty members. I run into professors I had my fi rst semester here, and they still call me by name, know my major, and ask me about my plans after graduation. It’s true that at Albertus you are a face and not a number. People here have been my mentors, my sounding boards, and because of them, I have grown more confi dent in who I am. Albertus has allowed me to grow and mature, guiding me to become the woman I have always wanted to be.

Many working adults begin their educational journey long after high school. For Lianne
Escher ’82, Bob Gagne, a student in the Master of Arts in Leadership program, and
Tina Ocone-Ramirez, a graduate of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 2010, the
journey continues when life is more complicated, but the long-postponed dream of a
college education or advanced degree fi nally fi nds fulfi llment. The School of Evening and
Graduate Programs and the School of New Dimensions tailor offerings to the needs
of working adults: convenient, accelerated and blended classes combine on-campus
and on-line learning. The College offers the same caring and supportive environment
in its adult programs as it does in the Traditional Day College. Flexible evening schedules
are offered at the main and Long Wharf campuses in New Haven, and in East Hartford.
Articulation agreements with community colleges facilitate the transfer of credits by
their students.

Laurie Sim Gagne found Albertus attractive because it was local and its small classes
provided great professor/student interactions. “My role models were always strong
people, well-spoken and respectful of others; and the minute that I came to Albertus,
I was surrounded by smart, moral women,” she says.
Bob Gagne, who will receive a Master of Arts in Leadership in 2012, met his wife
while she was a student here. “I’ve always loved this campus. When my son’s swim
team practiced at the College’s pool, I would go to the library to read.” Returning
to school for a master’s degree was always in Bob’s mind, but in the reality of life and
work and raising a family, the time was never right. Starting a master’s program
30 years after graduating from college wasn’t easy, but now is the right time for
him. Someday he would like to teach and knew he would need a master’s degree.
“Leadership is something I practice every day,” says this police chief.
Morgan Gagne is a sophomore at Albertus. She remembers, as a fi fth-or-sixth
grader, hearing her mother talking about how much she liked her days at the College.
After that, Albertus was always on her list of colleges. “It’s a good place to get a formal
education and learn about yourself,” says Laurie. “We love being an Albertus family.”

In her mid-thirties, Lianne Escher found her life as an individual, rather than someone
defi ned by various roles. “I knew that I wanted, someday, to help others as I was being
helped to recreate my life,” she says. It was that resolve that led her to Albertus, where
she gained the confi dence to pursue her interest in psychology. While a student here,
she also attended lectures at the Carl Jung Institute in New York City, and after fi ve
years of part-time study at Albertus received her degree. She studied for three years in
a master’s program at Smith College School for Social Work, and has a psychotherapy
practice. “I so appreciate the impact that the meaningful experiences at Albertus had
on my life.”
Athena Thompson, Escher’s daughter, remembers hearing about Albertus as a
teenager, but she too came to Albertus as an adult: “I worked after high school and
didn’t fi nd my way back to college until I was 32. I had two very young children, but
I wanted to be on campus during the day for a full college experience. It was worth
every minute of juggling my time.”
Elijah Beebe-Maddix, Thompson’s son, also grew up with fi rst-hand knowledge of
Albertus, often coming to campus with his mother. When it was college-time, a campus
tour helped him decide that Albertus was the right place to be.

Rosary Hall, built as a private residence in 1906, is the oldest building at Albertus
Magnus College, and it remains today the spiritual and academic heart of the College.
With its soaring columns and magnifi cent façade, it now is the entryway to the Learning
Commons, a library transformed and reinvented, ready to serve the needs of 21st
century students and faculty. A technologically-enhanced, fl exible space for scholarly
research and collaborative study by students of all ages, the Learning Commons also
houses the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, and the Offi ces of Academic
Advisement and Student Success, and Experiential Learning. The extensive interior
renovations in Rosary Hall respect and maintain the magnifi cent architectural beauty of
this iconic building, the backdrop for decades of Commencement ceremonies. Members
of the New Haven community can arrange for a community patron card at Rosary. For
more than a century, Rosary Hall has been a jewel on Prospect Hill.

Student-athletes excel in the classroom and on the fi eld. Frankie Falcon makes appearances
at both College and community events. This year the College completed the installation

College community and neighbors for many years.

AthleticsAt Albertus Magnus College, athletics are an important part of the educational journey,
woven into the fabric of our campus. Here, athletics are a partnership of sound mind
and sound body. “It is as important for our student-athletes to strive to be champions in
the classroom, in the community and in life after graduation as it is to be champions
on the fi eld or court,” says Michael Spinner, director of athletics. “We emphasize victory
as a by-product of doing things the right way.”
The College is a member of the NCAA, Division III; our women and men student-
athletes compete in 12 varsity sports, taking part in the Eastern College Athletic
Conference and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. A newly-installed turf playing
fi eld will be used by the Falcon soccer teams and brand-new lacrosse programs.
In 2012 lacrosse will be available as a club sport and move to varsity level in 2013.

“I believe in tenacity and hard work, and in respect for new ideas and relationships. This is what enables one to make a difference. I care deeply about New Haven, and I’m committed to the Dwight community and to improving the quality of life for our neighborhood residents. My experience in getting my undergraduate degree and my M.B.A. at Albertus has opened up so many opportunities for me in my current work. I liked that Albertus was small and that it had spiritual values.

In the life-cycle of a college, change is omnipresent. It is the inspiration that propels the
mind and spirit into a new future. So it has been with Albertus Magnus College for more
than 85 years. It was a bold move, a change, in 1925 to create the fi rst Catholic, liberal
arts, residential college for women in New England, but the founders—the indomitable
Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, now known as the Dominican Sisters of
Peace—were up to the task. The school endured and fl ourished, always true to its
mission of service: now providing women and men with an education that promotes the
search for truth in all its dimensions and is practical in its application. Our College builds
on a rich tradition and heritage, yet it is ever mindful of meeting the changing academic
needs and ethical challenges of students of all ages and of society.
We are emboldened and energized by the prospects for the future of Albertus Magnus
College, and we look forward to our centennial celebration in 2025.
