album cover analysis

After researching Lorde’s album covers, I have establish that this was the finished result. Compared to a lot of album covers these days, its incredibly plain and simple. The font used is all in capitals, and is large and bold against the dark background. Minimalist design – This actually works really well, as it’s simply selling the artist and her sound, which is linked to the values of dream pop. Simple black and grey colour scheme so the words stand out completely. Slightly unconventional. She is a dream pop artist, and so she has her quirks. Therefore this makes the album cover experimental and breaks the conventions of pop genre. Portrays the theme of all the songs involved, they are all very atmospheric and are dark, slow and intense at times. Simple facing portrait of Lorde. Showing no expression. Very shady and bleak, yet remains to grasp simplicity. Element of light on the front, however the back remains plain and dark.

Here is an album cover from the well-known pop artist Rita Ora. I am going to analyse this in order to give me more ideas on my own album cover, and make create a mix of elements from both.

Already I can see similarities and differences between the features of this album cover and Lorde’s.

The text is displayed in a bold red, and is in capital letters. This is a deliberate choice in order to draw audiences attention to the album, whilst also portraying Rita’s fun and enthusiastic persona.

Red is also Rita’s trademark colour – she often wears red lipstick and red clothes in her music videos, as it stands out against her white-blonde hair.

She is pulling an expression very similar to Marilyn Monroe. The fact her face is in black and white connotes class and elegance, which is enhanced when juxtaposed with the bright red writing.

Her face is directly placed under her name – gives the audience a visual link to who she is and what she looks like, helps them remember her.

Wearing chunky jewellery – helps us identify the fact she is from a younger generation, and portrays her fun style. Her watch is also a prominent visual, which suggests class as it looks expensive.
