Ben lived in the library. Everyday he crawls out of his hole and watched thekids at storytime.  He was fascinated by the children, and the free crumbs, not somuch the story. Every night he sneaks out and flips pages of books. He just looks atthe pictures.

One day Ben was listening to the kids at storytime. He thought his Uncle wassleeping in his rocking chair. Boy was he wrong!

“I told you to stay inside the hole at all times”“But...Uncle”“No buts! You can’t be outside! You could get caught by the Two Legged!”

After that, Ben tried to be more careful, but it’s not easy being an adventurous andcurious mouse you know.

The next night while looking at the pictures, he heard a loud noise. “I hope it’snot my Uncle”, Ben thought. He hid in the cracks. When the person came out herealized it was the librarian, Ms. Brooks. She’d seen him and ran out screaming “Iwon’t rest until you’re dead!” It probably wasn’t a good time to run back to him hole,but Ben was thinking the opposite. He ran out in a flash. He came home with a littlescrap on his back. Right at the moment he ran through the door his Uncle yelled athim.

The next week at the library, Ben was listening to storytime like he always does.But this time was different. There was a girl reading the book this time. He assumedher name was Bella, he heard another child call her that. She was reading the bookwith expression and good voices. He fell in love with her in an instant. This time wasalso different for Ben too. Instead of listening to the kids he was paying attention tothe story and to Bella. The day after that he kept doing the same thing. Stare anddrool. Stare and drool. Stare and drool. To tell you the truth he could do this all day.

One day when he was listening to the story, he didn’t hear the sweet voice ofBella, Instead he heard the frog croak of Ms. Brook. Later on, while he was listeningto some kids talking, he found out what happen. His heart sunk. Who could ever fire

Bella?! He thought about this for a moment. Then Ms.Brooks caught his eye. Shewouldn’t! She couldn’t! He watched her for a while getting angrier by the second.

I have to go find her Ben thought. She could be crying right now and I wouldnever know

Bella loved reading to children. They were really sweet and kind to hereveryday, so I guess you could say it was her dream job. She just like to explore andfind out where she ended up. Just like stories. Yesterday when Bella forgot her keysat the library, she saw a cute little mouse. Then she saw Ms. Brooks. She wasstanding with a broom in one hand trying to kill the adorable mouse. At that momentBella knew her soul was full of more coal than she ever imagined. She felt she had todo something. So she ran in front of her and just stood there. Ms. Brooks looked atBella in astonishment then she yelled, “What do you think you are doing?!”

Then Bella spoke up “Saving this cute creature”. Right after that she fired Bella.The next day, Ben gave up on his routine. He stopped watching the children

and locked himself in his room. He was making a plan to find Bella.One day when Uncle Roy went to get more cheese in the market, Ben slipped

out the door. And to his surprise there was Bella reading a book from the shelf waitingfor him. He must have looked shocked because a second later she was saying, “Don’tworry”.

She gave him some cheese. He finally got up the courage to say, “I need yourhelp”.I guess she understood him because then she said, “With what?”Ben’s teeth chattered and sweat was dripping down his back. He froze for just

a second, then gathered his courage and said, “I want to be a good reader like you,but I don’t know how”

“I will teach you,” she exclaimed. “Meet me here tomorrow at 2:00. Then shegave him a little pocket watch.

The next day he met her there. The first thing they learned was he abc’s.“ABCDEFH?” Ben tried.

“No silly Its ABCDEFG” Bella replied. Then Ben tried again.“ABCDEFG?”You’re a natural!” Bella repliedThe next day when Bella walked in the library, Ms. Brooks got suspicious.“What do you think you are doing here?”“Just because I was fired doesn’t mean I was banned!” Bella answered.

“Now you are!” Ms.Brooks snarled.Ben was watching the whole thing. He just wished he could scatter across the

room and stand in front of Bella. But he knew he couldn’t. A librarian or anybodywouldn’t be afraid of him. Besides if he did he would have a better chance of dying. Ijust can’t leave her out there he thought.

“I don’t know what your problem is, but you can’t get away with hurtinginnocent people and animals!” Bella replied.

The first thing Ben thought was, “I’m so glad she didn’t call me a rodent”. Butthen he had an idea. He ran out of his hole and crawled up Ms. Brooks shirt.

“Yeow!!!” Ms. Brooks said. As if on cue, Ben bit her on her back and all overher belly.

“Someone get this rodent off of me!!!” Bella then grabbed Ben by the tailcupped him in her hands and waited for Ms.Brooks to react. “Thank you. Now get ridof that thing” Ms. Brooks said in between breaths. While Ms. Brooks was talking Bellawas grooming Ben with her hands. It felt good to him. He knew what it was like to havea friend like her. After that mess, she took Ben to her apartment. “Would you likesome cocoa?”

“Yes thank you” Ben replied. “And by the way my name is Ben.” “What aperfect name for a cute little mouse.”

Ben blushed. He turned ten shades of red. Then they got started right awaywith his ABC’s because he had a lot of work to do.

The next week he tried the whole alphabet.“ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ?”“You got it!” Bella chanted then she gave Ben a kiss on the cheek. That made himblush one hundred shades of pink.

The next week Ben learned small words. He practiced them out loud. When heshowed Bella his progress, she smiled and squeezed him tight. The week after thatthey learned small books. Ben read to Bella. “The cat jumped up on the caaa”“Caterpillar” Bella said. Then he tried again.

“The cat jumped up on the caterpillar and they rode off on the desert together”Bella was so happy she danced around her apartment with him.

Ben was doing so good she thought he should skip to the next step. He was theeasiest student I have ever taught. Sometimes she wished he was a real person soshr didn’t have to sneak around and pretend he was her pet. He was making so muchprogress. She thought she would tell him to read the next book. Library mouse. It’s aperfect book for him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The next day Bella told Ben to read Library Mouse. She said its was the perfect bookfor him. He realized that It was. It is about a mouse who lives in the library and readsall sorts of book, That could someday be Ben If his Uncle lets him read in his room.Sometimes Ben wished she was a mouse, so he can talk to her better. Also wewouldn’t have to sneak around and pretend Ben is her pet. While Ben was readinglibrary mouse he had a great idea. He decided to make a card for Bella. She nevergave up on me even when I messed up. She was the best teacher ever.
