The program was to create a study space for students on the Dalhousie University campus. A study of the circulation and of the calming aspects of thesitewere influential in thecreationof twocontrastingspaces;anorganic stone circulation path through the site and the study spaces under a canopy of posts and beams, supporting a roof permitting diffused light.

2009

This design studio focused on the program of a house, considering it at the urban, building and detail scale. The intent was to create a housing community with a prominent streetscape while also individ-ually considering environmental aspects of a site in Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia. The L-shaped concrete service bars burrow into the ter-rain and provide thermal mass, while the wood framed walls embrace the views and sun. The Schindler House was of great inspiration.

2009

The project was to design a community theatre in Halifax to seat an audience of 160 people. The proscenium wall of the theatre extends along the length of the site dividing front of house from backstage. The seating rises over the sidewalk marking the entrance and creating a strong presence in the community.

The project used the existing program of the Boston Ballet School for a site on the Fort Point Channel, in South Boston. The surrounding area is mainly parking and a crab shack sat on part of the site, chosen to be left as part of the project. Elemental planes of water and land were composed of to create a dynamic design within the building and its surroundings.

The project was to create a instrument to make the landscape legible for a site in Grande Pre, Nova Scotia. An an-nalemma referred to the timely process of dyke construction performed by the Acadians for decades starting in the 18th century. The boardwalk alludes to the path a potential dyke ending in a structure relating to the equation of time.Atnoonthesunshinesthroughaholelandingonanannalemmaonthefloorindicatingthetimeofyear.

The site was part of a master planning exercise with the entire design studio, for a golf course in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The program included a medical officebuilding,anassistedlivingresidence,aphysiotherapyclinicandawell-ness spa, as part of an transit hub located on the western boundary of the site. As a book end to the designated high street and connected to the existing bus lines, the site serves the developmentt, as well as the surrounding city. Designed with Rebecca Daly.program

Notes: Curtain wall at glazing.

Water Penetration)Drain holes in caps allow water to drain to the exterior and not build up within mullions. Particularly important for the outer facade. Overall it is a very important feature of curtain walls as unlike smaller units there is no flashing at window openings to drain water away from facade. Gaskets then prevent the water from entering into system. Inner facade is a unitized system. Seals are often more reli-able as they are factory constructed.

Moisture Control)Air vent below keeps air across curtain wall moving to prevent condensation, also if heated, the glazing will be warm enough to prevent dew point from occurring on glazing.

Insulation)The r value of the double glazed inner facade is R 2.5. To achieve this a low e-coding is placed on the inner side of the outer glazing of the window, known as surface 3. By placing the glass on surface 3 some solar heat will be directed out of the building and into the cavity of the double facade.

Thermal Bridging)Due to the high conductivity of aluminium incorporate thermal breaks in the curtain wall are important. Gaskets that are placed between the pressure bar and mullions and function as thermal breaks and help with acoustic isolation.

Notes: Double Facade

Water Penetration)Double Facades are known for their water penetration resis-tance as the outer facade is placed away from the building and the important elements such as the structure. The outer facade reduces in coming air velocities reducing blown rain from entering inner facade. It also mitigates water from direct rain, air pressure differences and capillary action from enter-ing the building.

Moisture Control)Air flows through the cavity via natural or mechanical ventila-tion to prevent condensation from occurring much in the same way a vent at the base of a window does.

Vapour Barrier)The inner double facade incorporates spandrel panels and these occur at important areas where the curtain connects to other surfaces of the building: the roof and soffit. Connecting vapour barrier at the roof was possible.

Insulation)The R- value of a double facade is hard to determine. “Accu-rately modelling the energy performance of DSF is inherently complex due to the dynamic interaction of several factors, including glazing thermal and optical performance, natural and forced convection cavity flows, adjacent perimeter zone space conditioning loads, operation and characteristics of shades and blinds, daylight transmission to perimeter spaces, dynamic variations in wind speeds that alter cavity inlet and outlet pressures, and framing system thermal performance” What is known is during heating season, the cavity inlet and outlet vents close to prevent airflow, trapping solar gains in the cavity and reducing daytime heat losses through the façade. It can make a difference of around 10 degrees. **

Thermal Bridging)The main point of concern for thermal bridging occurs as the outriggers which need to attach back to the structure of the building as they support the outer facade. To reduce thermal bridging a L-bracket and T- bracket compose a hanger system for the outriggers to attach back to. The T bracket is sandwiched by two outriggers (one from each side by side curtain wall unit). Two layers of neoprene, between the outrig-gers and T-bracket reduce the thermal bridging. This all occurs within the insulation to further reduce thermal bridging.

Notes: Curtain wall at Spandrel Panel

Water Penetration)Back pans provide a second line of defence against water infiltration, and is located for areas of the curtain wall that are not visible from the interior and are difficult to access, at the floor levels.

Moisture Control)Insulation is between the back pan and the exterior cladding in order to maintain the dew point outboard of the back pan so that the back pan acts as an air and vapour barrier. Placed on inner facade of double facade, cavity works as buffer zone placing dew point further from inner facade.

Vapour Barrier)Metal pan is discontinuous within curtain wall.

Insulation)The r-value of a spandrel panel 2 lb Density Polystyrene can have an R-value up to 22.79. *** The spandrel panels are placed at the floor levels to conceal floor and most impor-tantly add insulation by critical areas with the main structure. 5.Avoided exposing the aluminium frame inboard of the ther-mal break to cold air by aligning all elements of curtain wall. Apply same as curtain wall above.

Fadaces: the Detail Behind the Facem2 technology

2010

The course focused on redesigning the facade of a previous design. The redesigning occured with consideration for detailing of the facade according to preformance requirements. Focus was on a double facade system of my B5 Bos-ton Ballet School design project.

NOTES:

Section cuts from pile foundation system through ground floor to roof. Cut line indicates the floor division between the offices and top studios.

Finding details on double facades was not easy as it is still a relatively new method, particularly in North America.

There is a double facade in Boston Massachusetts, which I found some detailing of. They dealt with the challenge of the second facade by building it its own structure, including a small foundation.

However, with my design the double facade begins at the second storey. For the system I used I looked at the GSW Headquarters in Germany. Project Managed by Brian Lilley, he became my primary source for detailing on the double facade.

For the first attempt at the double facade, the inner wall was not treated as a curtain wall. Now it is a unitized curtain wall with spandrel panel at floor levels.

The foundation system was another challenging component to detail. Due to the nature of the site being in fill from the big dig in Boston, the ground soil is unstable for regular foundation walls.

Piles was the best option through this section of the building. However, another area of the building has a basement. A basement would need a different foundation system using steel sheet piles instead of regular piles.

A project I was heavily involved with at Macdonald Zuberec Ensslen Architects was an addition for Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in St. Catha-rines, Ontario. The sketch-up Model was completed by myself. I assisted with the drawings. Impor-tant considerations during the development of the design was sun, for daylighting, integration with the existing building and providing flexible spaces.
