The arrival of passenger train service toAlexandria in 1879 opened the entireregion. Most visitors focused on outdooractivities and it wasn’t long beforeAlexandria’s bountiful lakes were heraldedas “Minnesota’s Bass Fishing Capital”.Back then the bass was king! Bass wereplentiful and anglers loved catching, aswell as eating them. Vintage photographsshow the smiling anglers with large stringsof trophy-sized bass posed on the shoresof area’s lakeside hotels. The northernpike, sunfish and crappies were also popu-lar. The walleye was only found in limitednumbers throughout the region.

Fast-forward to today and much haschanged, and many anglers would say for

the better. The Minnesota DNRclassifies the lakes in the Alexandriaarea as mesotrophic. Mesotrophiclakes have medium nutrient levelsmaking them an ideal home tosport fish such as walleye, smalland large mouth bass, crappies,

panfish, muskie and northern pike. TheMinnesota DNR stocks many of the arealakes and local clubs, like the VikingSportsmen (www.vikingsportsmen.org),annually contribute millions of walleye fryto area lakes. Dana Freese ofChristopherson Bait, has been on everyfishable lake in the Alexandria Lakes Area.

“This is a great area for multi-speciesfishing and it’s one of the few area’s whereyou can reasonably expect to catchwalleyes, bass, northern pike, and muskie,as well as some really good panfishing,”Freese commented. “Pretty much whatev-er you want to fish for is around here.”

The walleye has dethroned the bass, asmany prefer its mild flavor, but make nomistake about it, bass fishing in the

Alexandria Lakes Area is still very popularand rewarding. Freese has fished bass onMexico’s famous Lake El Salto and hashigh praise for Alexandria.

“The best fishery we have is bass,”states Freese. “It’s as good as anything inthe world for numbers and average size. There’s nowhere better!”

Hard water fishing can be very produc-tive. According to Freese, walleye fishingcan be fairly good in the evening fromwhen anglers can safely get out on the iceuntil early January. The rest of the winteranglers fish for crappies and panfish.Contact the Alexandria Lakes AreaChamber of Commerce for information onicehouse rentals at area resorts.

Visit the Department of NaturalResources' website (www.dnr.state.mn.us),and click on the "Lake Finder" link, fordata on any Minnesota lake.

The Vikingland Sportsmen Club hasstocked area lakes with over 611,000pounds of walleye fingerlings since 2008.
