Alignment with U.S. Arctic Strategy
WORKING WITH THE ARCTIC COUNCIL
Several National Arctic policy statements require U.S. Government Agencies to participate in international initiatives, particularly the work of the Arctic Council during the U.S. chairmanship from 2015-2017. BOEM anticipates increased engagement in working groups and task forces during this time. www.arctic-council.org

EMBRACING TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE
Traditional Knowledge is a body of evolving practical knowledge based on the observations and personal experience of local residents over a multi-generational time period. It typically finds expression in a specific environmental context, as technical mastery or expertise that promotes survival and well-being in that location and is shared primarily through kinship or household networks.
ARCTIC INTERACTION Guided by the Department of the Interior, BOEM and our interagency partners are identifying opportunities to implement the elements of various policy directives, including the National Strategy for the Arctic Region. In the spirit of an integrated approach to Arctic management and in support of the U.S. Arctic Council Chairmanship, BOEM participates in a number of national and international scientific and resource management coordination bodies including: Interdepartmental coordination: Alaska Cooperative Planning Group Interior Arctic Coordination Group Interagency coordination: Interagency Policy Committee on
Arctic Region Policy Arctic Policy Group Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee Interagency Working Group on Coordination of
Domestic Energy Development and Permitting in Alaska

BOEM has managed oil and gas and mineral activities on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf for more than 60 years.
We manage more than 1 billion acres of the Out-er Continental Shelf off the State of Alaska.
This area potentially holds more than 23 billion barrels and 108 trillion cubic feet of undiscov-ered technically recoverable oil and natural gas.
It also holds offshore renewable resources such as wind, wave and tidal energy.
Further, it contains significant gold resources, rare earth minerals, and sand and gravel.
Since 1973, BOEM has invested about $450 mil-lion for environmental and socioeconomic re-search in Alaska, and completed more than 500 scientific reports.
We make Traditional Knowledge part of our so-cial science portfolio, and we actively consult with local and tribal governments
OUR ARCTIC GOALS Promote energy independence, environmental
protection and economic development through responsible, science-based management of OCS Arctic energy and marine mineral resources.
Engage with the State of Alaska and our interagency partners on Arctic domestic affairs and in support of the U.S. National Strategy for the Arctic Region.
Engage and partner with Alaska Native and other Arctic indigenous peoples and organizations to use Traditional Knowledge in the stewardship of natural resources.
Firmly establish the value of the bureau’s Arctic expertise and experience for furtherance of national and international Arctic science, policy and stewardship.
Support the U.S. Department of State and other departments and agencies as they engage in international work in the Arctic, including the Arctic Council.
OUR ARCTIC VISION
To be a valued partner in domestic
and international Arctic matters
pertaining to Arctic marine resource
stewardship, scientific expertise
and sustainable development.
