President’s MessageToday the skies over Buzzards Bay in south-eastern Massachusetts are filled with puffy clouds colored grey and white against a clear blue sky, with winds blowing through the large oak trees and temperatures in the 60s. Hard to believe that summer is over but the cooler temperatures suggest that it’s time to think about returning to Ocean Reef!Fortunately we can all look forward to an-other season of varied, challenging and inspiring offerings at the Art League. Op-portunities for learning and participation abound! Grab your pen and mark those things that you would like to try this year – something new and something old – maybe a trip, the book club or a photog-raphy class. The season begins with our Annual Showcase exhibiting examples of Art League offerings for the year. This will run through Vintage Weekend to allow as many residents as possible to stop in and learn what the Art League is all about. In January, we will again co-host with the Islamorada Arts District the one day event of Paradise Paint Out. Twenty art-ists from around the country will return to Ocean Reef and spend the day painting at various sites around the Reef. This was a very well received event last year and we look forward to an even better experience this year. Later in the year we will host a lecture by Louise Irvine on the history of Ardmore Pottery from South Africa. This will be followed by a reception and show of this highly decorated, whimsical, beau-tifully crafted pottery.I would like to recognize all those whose creative ideas and hard work are evident in this newsletter. Many members worked hard during the late spring and summer months to organize a fantastic array of classes, trips, events and clubs for us to enjoy during the 2015-2016 season. Thank you all! I look forward to seeing you on the Reef and at the Art League very soon.

Barbara Ferri, President

From the Executive DirectorThe Art League has not been idle during these summer months. Elevator repairs are complete, the landscaping out front has been trimmed to open the street view to our beautiful building and I traveled up the East Coast seeking out new artists, in-structors, mediums and trends in the Art World. I was amazed at the diversity of in-spiration and talent! I returned to Ocean Reef feeling stimulated and refreshed and ready to begin another challenging season in the Art League. We hope that you are excited to begin your season trying something new and creative, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. The Art League is where the fun begins. This Newsletter is filled with artis-tic, creative choices for almost any talent

and skill level. We urge you to sign up for many experiences and expand your world! We are delighted to host the Paradise Paint Out event again. Well-known plein air art-ists from around the country will be creating masterpieces around the Reef on January 21

between the hours of 8:00am-3:00pm. An exhibition of these works will follow at a reception in the Racquet Club hosted by Russell Post Sotheby’s.The Gift Shop is now restocked with won-derful handmade crafts, fine wooden sculptures, jewelry, paintings and glass-works. Please stop in to browse the Gift Shop, view the current show or just to say hello.Join us and join the fun!

Editor’s Message"Learning new skills keeps an aging mind sharp" so says the Association for Psycho-logical Science. If taking up golf or tennis is not on your agenda, why not give the Art League a try. We offer a variety of activities that will keep your mind active while you are having FUN.

Adults are encouraged to stay active and engaged, keeping their minds sharp. As the saying goes, "use it or lose it". The latest studies indicate that only certain activities, for example learning a more challenging skill like photography, painting, or jewelry making, are more likely to improve cogni-tive functions. You need to take on a chal-lenge that will stimulate you mentally. You may want to participate in the Art League's Book Club, create a masterpiece in the woodturning workshop or produce a papier mache objet d’arte. Ever wanted to make a Nantucket basket? Want to get off the Reef? Come join us on one our many informative, entertaining and fun-filled field trips."When you are inside your comfort zone you may be outside of the enhancement zone." The Art League is here to get you into the enhancement zone. Our newsletter is your guide for the up-coming season. Grab a highlighting pen and mark up the activities that are of in-terest to you and sign up early before the classes fill up.

President’s MessageWinter 2016 Art League offerings for the 2016 season include 20 New Workshops taught by some visiting artists and returning favorites. Some of the highlights include a Painting workshop with Kim English, a Colorado artist with an impressive resume , having exhibited at the Allied Artists of America winning the Gold Medal of Honor, the National Academy of Western Arts, the Oil Painters of America and the Salmagundi Club. Kim’s instruction will focus on the model both indoors and outside, encouraging students to work fast and loose, concentrating on the big relationships instead of the details. Another workshop “Wild about Wildlife: Bird Photography and More” will be taught by Phil Witt , a New Jersey artist, who is the past president of the Camera Naturalist Photo Club , one of the premier nature clubs on the East Coast. His images have won numerous awards in both club and statewide competitions. For the watercolorists there is “Translucent Light and Shadow in Watercolor” with Jaimie Cordera, a nationally recognized watercolor artist. Jaimie will teach her signature use of pouring and spray techniques to achieve the illusion of brilliant translucent light and lush shadows in watercolor paintings. Each participant will leave with one completed painting and a new way of creating this image. In addition to all the workshops, classes and clubs leave time for one of the fabulous trips scheduled for January, February and March. Be sure to sign up soon as these trips are always popular and fill up quickly. My best wishes to all of you and your families for a happy, healthy and creative New Year! Barbara Ferri, President

From the Executive Director This season is off to a bustling beginning. It's a wonderful time to be excited about everything happening around us. Once again in partnership with Morada Way Arts and Cultural District and Russell Post Sotheby's International Realty, we will host the 2nd Annual Paradise Paint Out. On Thursday, January 21 from 8am to 3:30pm, 20 of America's finest Plein Air artists will "paint the town". You will most likely see them painting at several points of interest around Ocean Reef. Participating artists are Tom Sadler, Sally Evans, Priscilla Coote, Morgan Samuel Price, Kathleen Denis, Maggie McClellan, Vlad Yeliseyev, Larry Moore, John Caggiano, Charles Dickinson, Richard Lundgren, Jennifer Holmes, Peter Carolin, Natalie Andreeva, Linda Holmes, Hai-Ou Hou, Ken Dewaard, Kirk Larsen, Randy Pitts and Bob Harper. We hope to see you that evening at the Racquet Club for a special reception hosted by Russell Post Sotherby's International Realty. There, you will have an opportunity to purchase the paintings that were made the same day at various familiar locations. There are many more exciting exhibits coming up. Back by popular demand is the "All Male Review". Palette Society LectureArdmore South African Art

Monday, February 224:00pm Cultural Center

Louise Irvine, an expert on ceramic art and the Director of WMODA, will tell the Ardmore story and celebrate its uplifting, amusing and whimsical art. Ardmore is now South Africa’s largest ceramic art stu-dio, creating entirely original and unique works of art, which fascinate and enchant

collectors all over the world. Queen Elizabeth II was pre-sented with Ardmore during President Zuma’s state visit to England and there is also an Ardmore masterpiece in the White House. Museums from New York to Zurich have ac-quired examples of Ardmore ceramic art and one of the world’s largest collections is

in South Florida at the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts (WMODA).Leopards leaping from a luxuriant jungle vase and Zulus riding towering giraffes on safari are just some of the highlights from the exhibition of Ardmore ce-ramic art. The Ardmore artists have be-come renowned for their exuberant use of color and their distinctive modeling of African flora and fauna. Leopards, zebras, giraffes, hyenas and monkeys burst with life from flam-boyant flowers and foliage to form quirky vases, bowls, tureens and trays. The art-ists have also focused on different styles of

figurative sculp-ture including African travelers riding on exotic animals and sto-ry-telling figures inspired by Zulu culture.

There will be a reception and opening exhibit of Ardmore South African Art at the Art League immediately following the lecture.

The various effects of light will be discussed as well as how Kim utilizes his palette.About the artist: Colorado-based painter, Kim En-glish, depicts the simple beauty found in daily life. Each painting speaks to the focus of his inspiration, the harmony existing between light and shadow. His subject matter, ranges from a street fruit stand in Mexico to sun filled windows which create a particular mood. The viewer is introduced to mo-ments wrapped in depth and texture, emphasizing his application of paint. A feeling of spontaneity is maintained by completing each painting in one sit-ting utilizing the alla prima method. Immediacy is important, according to English, not only because it reflects the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint.Raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs, English was born in 1957. After gradu-ation from the Rocky Mountain School of Art he joined the faculty and later began teaching at the Art Students League of Denver and the Scottsdale Artists School. He has exhibited at the Allied Art-ists of America winning the Gold Medal of Honor; the National Academy of Design; the Artists of America-Denver Rotary Club; National Academy of Western Arts; Arts for the Parks; the Colorado Governor’s Invitational – Loveland Museum; the

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Wednesday, November 11 | 4:30pmPulitzer Prize win-ning story from the highly acclaimed author about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in oc-cupied France as they try to survive the devastation of World War ll.

Facilitator: ORC Member Monique Do-movitch, author of eight novels who also writes under the pen name of Carol Ann Martin. She is currently working on her ninth book.

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

Wednesday, December 9 | 4:30pmThis newly-discov-ered novel is actually the earliest known work of Harper Lee, author of best selling To Kill A Mocking-bird. Set 20 years later than Mockingbird, it features many of the same characters. But

this is not a sequel – Lee wrote this book first and her publisher persuaded her to write something set earlier in her charac-ters lives. The result was To Kill A Mocking-bird. Go Set A Watchman was never pub-lished and had been forgotten. In Watchman, Scout is returning to May-comb to visit her father. She struggles with many issues involving her father, society, and the small town that shaped her. You may want to review Lee’s Mockingbird again before reading this.Facilitator: Pat Miller

Road to Character by David Brooks

Wednesday, January 20 | 4:30pmBrooks’ book focuses on the deeper values that should inform our lives.Responding to the Big ME which em-phasizes external success he challenges us to re-balance the scales between our resume status

(achieving wealth, fame and status) and our eulogy virtues (kindness, bravery, honesty, and faithfulness). Blending psychology, politics, spirituality, and confessional, Brooks provides an op-portunity for us to rethink our priorities and strive to build rich inner lives marked by humility and moral depth.Facilitator: Dr. Bob Henley

Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

Wednesday, February 17 | 4:30pmA charmingly written short book on find-ing love again later in life. Story features Addie and Louis who are in their early 70s and both have been living alone in the same community for several years. They

experience brave new adventures as well as difficulties along the way. The author, Haruf, wrote this book after he learned he was dying. He wrote it in just 45 days as a tribute to his wife that he had met later in life. Facilitator: Gertrude Mann

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

Wednesday, March 16 | 4:30pmA romantic comedy. Don Tillman is a bril-liant professor of ge-netics but completely socially inept. When he decides to use sci-entific methods to find a wife, the humor is infectious. Another delightful read which will keep you smiling.

Facilitator: Elizabeth Kligerman

Suggested Reading: Citizens of London

by Lynne OlsonIt has also been suggested that our book lovers read Citizens of London by Lynne Olson. The author will be speaking at the Cultural Center in February in conjunction with their World War ll series this season.
